Shallow Subsurface Stratigraphy Inferred from the Use of Vertical Electrical soundings (VES) Survey in Central Chihuahua, Mexico

Vertical Electrical soundings (VES) provide fast and economical measurements used in geophysical exploration. VES were carried out in El Sauz-Encinillas (ESE) aquifer, in northern Mexico, to determine apparent resistivity and geoelectrical units’ thickness. Despite it being one of the three main aquifers feeding Chihuahua city, a lack of available geophysical data prevails in its northern portion. The main goal of this study was the determination of the geoelectrical units in the subsurface stratigraphy via electrical-resistivity soundings. The ESE’ aquifer is located within alluvial Quaternary sediments, with varying granulometry and reaching from a few meters to more than 600 meters of thickness at the center of the valley. Forty-five vertical electrical resistivity soundings (Schlumberger array, maximum AB/2 distance of 500 m) were performed throughout ESE aquifer’s northern portion. Field data were analyzed using software. Results illustrate a wide variability in resistivity values throughout the study area. Five geoelectrical units were identified: 1) a hardpan topsoil, with resistivity values ranging from 200 - 800 Ω-m;2) an alluvial material mixture (sand/silt) with resistivity values ranging from 25 to 100 Ω-m;3) playa lake-type material (clay/evaporites mixture) with resistivity values ranging from 0.2 to 15 Ω-m;4) a gravel/sand mixture with resistivity values from 100 to 300 Ω-m;and 5) a partly fractured rock or conglomeratic material with resistivity values ranging from 400 to 3500 Ω-m. The electrical resistivity data, therefore gives reasonably accurate results that can be used to understand the subsurface stratigraphy and basement configuration in groundwater exploration.

The Tartar aquifer unit, is located at the SSO of the city of Boujdour, at a distance of nearly 86 km, and crossed (in its western part) by the National Road N1 connecting the towns of Boujdour and Lagouira passing through the vicinity of the city of Dakhla (PK40). It is exploited by rural settlements for domestic use (especially the inhabitants of fishing villages) and livestock watering, only through wells named Khtout Hobia (IRE 126/124) and Hassi Tartar known as Khtout Trayh (IRE 104/124). These wells have been tracked by a piezometric groundwater table and from 2011 to the present day. The interpretation of the electrical soundings in AB ≤ 2000 m allowed to differentiate the presence of two families of electrical soundings A and B, to establish the resistivity maps in AB = 200, 300 and 400 ihm⋅m with qualitative aspects, to draw up the map of the isohypses of the roof of the intermediate Dt1 representing the impermeable floor of the aquifer and to highlight two types of discontinuities;electrical discontinuities corresponding to lateral facies changes (limit of erosion surfaces) separating the families A and B of electrical soundings and those corresponding to syn-sedimentary faults which structured the formations into horsts and grabens. The lithological sections of the existing water points and that of oil well 43-1 allowed the geological identification of the geoelectric layers highlighted by the electrical soundings diagrams. As a result, the sandstone and lumachelic formations constituting the aquifer are of Moghrebian-Pleistocene age represented by the resistant R (Family A), sometimes grouping, in its basal part, sandstone levels of the Miocene roof (Family B). These formations lie directly on the Miocene sandy marls represented by the intermediate Dt1. Weather forecasting in the Southern Ocean and Antarctica is a challenge above all due to the rarity of observations to be assimilated in numerical weather prediction(NWP)*** observations are expensive and logistically challenging,it is important to evaluate the benefit that additional observations could bring to *** soundings applying unmanned aerial vehicles(UAVs)have a large potential to supplement conventional radiosonde sounding ***,we applied UAV and radiosonde sounding observations from an RV Polarstern cruise in the ice-covered Weddell Sea in austral winter 2013 to evaluate the impact of their assimilation in the Polar version of the Weather Research and Forecasting(Polar WRF)*** experiments revealed small to moderate impacts of radiosonde and UAV data *** any case,the assimilation of sounding data from both radiosondes and UAVs improved the analyses of air temperature,wind speed,and humidity at the observation site for most of the ***,the impact on the results of 5-day-long Polar WRF experiments was often felt over distances of at least 300 km from the observation *** experiments succeeded in capturing the main features of the evolution of near-surface variables,but the effects of data assimilation varied between different *** to the limited vertical extent of the UAV observations,the impact of their assimilation was limited to the lowermost 1?2-km layer,and assimilation of radiosonde data was more beneficial for modeled sea level pressure and near-surface wind speed.

Multidisciplinary Approach for a Basement Aquifer Location in Tanda Region, Côte d’Ivoire

The lack of knowledge about fracture systems in Tanda region has led to an approximative establishment of drilling and so a difficult access to groundwater. Thus, a multidisciplinary approach including satellite imagery and electrical resistivity method was conducted with the main objective to locate productive fractures of water in the study area. Indeed, 195-54, 195-55, 196-54, and 196-55 scenes of Landsat 7 ETM+ satellite images were used. Also, sixty-two (62) vertical electrical soundings (VES) of the Schlumberger configuration and hundred twenty-nine (129) electrical trailing (ET) were performed with a resistivity-meter SYSCAL Pro. Thanks to different treatments applied to satellite images, structural lineaments have been extracted whose main directions are N00-10 (N-S), N90-100 (E-W), N70-80 and N100-110. The interpretation of electrical trailing data made it possible to validate the lineament map by the determination of the fracturing directions. Those are NW-SE, N-S, NE-SW and to some extent E-W. The result of the electrical sounding data showed the presence of three geoelectric layers comprising firstly cuirass and lateritic clays and possibly topsoil, secondly sands and/or clay sandstone and firdly either granites or sandstones or schists. The second geoelectrical layer corresponds to the potential aquifer because of its relatively low electrical resistivity values (13 Ω·m to 180 or 240 Ω·m). In addition, drillings established at the right of these geological structures provided an average water yield of 4.22 m3·h-1, sufficient for rural hydraulic. Moreover, these results made it possible to obtain a correlation between drilling productivity and the major directions of fracturing. This indicates that the most productive directions are in order of importance NE-SW, NW-SE, E-W and finally N-S. They also correspond to the major fracturing directions of Tanda region. Determination of Aquifer Properties and Groundwater Vulnerability Mapping Using Geoelectric Method in Yenagoa City and Its Environs in Bayelsa State, South South Nigeria

Nineteen Schlumberger vertical electrical soundings (VES) were carried out within and around Yenagoa city, South South Nigeria, using a maximum current electrode separation ranging between 300 - 400 m. The objectives of the study were 1) to evaluate the possibility of mapping Quaternary sediments to infer the geological structure from the electrical interpretation and identify formations that may hold fresh water with low concentration of conducting minerals such as iron 2) to evaluate the vulnerability of the aquifer in the study area. The interpretation of the data collected was by computer assisted iterative interpretation using 1-D inversion technique software (1X1D, Interpex, USA). The results of the interpretation revealed four distinct geoelectric layers. Sounding curve types obtained in the area are mostly of the form ρ1 > ρ2 ρ3 ρ4 (where ρ is the density) but fresh water lenses with low concentration of conducting minerals such as iron were obtained only in locations that exhibit ρ1 > ρ2 ρ3 ρ4 curve types. Depth to the aquifer ranges from 4.5 m in the vicinity of VES 05 to 27.0 m at the vicinity of VES 14. The resistivity of the aquiferous horizon varies between 60 - 2868 Ωm. High transverse resistance values obtained were associated with zones of high transmissivity which agrees with the geology of the Benin Formation (Coastal Plain sands) consisting of fine-medium-coarse sands. The aquifer vulnerability map illustrates the impermeability of the overburden clay layer. Values of >0.5 mhos indicate good protective capacity, while values <0.3 mhos indicate vulnerable zones with probable risk of contamination.

A Hydrogeophysical Model of the Relationship between Geoelectric and Hydraulic Parameters, Central Jordan

Geoelectrical soundings using the Schlumberger array were carried out in the vicinity of 23 pumping test sites to determine aquifer parameters, central Jordan. On the basis of aquifer geometry, the area has been di-vided into two hydraulic units: the northern flood plain and the flood plain to its south. Field resistivity data are interpreted in terms of the true resistivity and thickness of subsurface layers. These parameters are then correlated with the available pumping test data. Significant correlations between the transmissivity and modified transverse resistance as well as between the hydraulic conductivity and formation factor were ob-tained for the two hydraulic units, in central Jordan are presented here.
