A prototype Raman lidar was designed for monitoring tropospheric CO2 profile and other scientific investigations. The third harmonic of Nd：YAG laser （354.7-nm wavelength） was used as stimulated light source to provide nighttime measurements. Filter with high rejection ratio performance was used to extract CO2 Raman signals from Rayleigh-Mie scattering signals effectively. To improve the real time monitoring function, a two-channel signal collection system was designed to collect CO2 and N2 Raman scattering signals simultaneously. The N2 Raman scattering signals were used to retrieve aerosol extinction coefficient. Typical features of CO2 concentration profile and aerosol extinction coefficient in Hefei were presented. The mixing ratio of atmospheric CO2 in Hefei can reach about 360 - 400 ppmv.

We derive the threshold pump intensity for a singly resonant intracavity optical parametric oscillator （IOPO） based on a temporal coupled field model. Particular attention is paid to the dependence of the intracavity singly resonant OPO （SRO） threshold intensity on the signal wave output coupling. Meanwhile, a Nd：YAG laser pumped KTiOPO4 （KTP） IOPO for eye-safe laser output is studied experimentally. The experiment is performed with four signal wave output reflectivities of 60%, 70%, 80%, and 90%, respectively. The measured values are in good agreement with the theoretical results. With an output coupler reflectivity of 80%, a peak power of 70 kW at 1572 nm has been obtained at a repetition rate of 3.5 kHz. The pulse width is 4.9 ns. Such investigation is helpful to identifying suitable operational regime of low pump intensity.

A narrow linewidth continuous wave Ho：YAP laser with two Fabry-Perot etalons pumped by a Tm：YLF laser is reported. The maximum output power reaches 8.3 W when the incident pump power is 15.8 W, with 52.5% optical-to- optical conversion efficiency and 62.6% slope efficiency. A stable laser output at 2118.1 nm is achieved, with a linewidth less than 0.4 nm （full width at half maximum）. The beam quality factor is M2- 1.25, measured by the traveling knife-edge method.

A low-threshold middle-infrared （mid-IR） MgO：PPLN optical parametric generation （OPG） pumped by a laser diode （LD） end-pumped Z-type Nd：YLF laser at 1047 nm is realized with high reflectivity（HR） mirror for signal. At repetition rate of 10 kHz, the OPG threshold of 50 μJ has been achieved with HR mirror for signal. Compared with the threshold without mirror, the threshold decreases by 17%. Using HR mirror for pump at output side of crystal, the threshold of 40 μJ is achieved. The 2.7 - 4.1 μm continuous tunable output is produced with seven grating periods from 28.5 to 31.5 μm and temperatures from 30 to 200 ℃. When the incident average pump power is 3 W, the OPG idler output power is 0.46 W at 3.26 μm, which corresponds to optical-to-optical conversion efficiency up to 15.3%.

We investigate the stimulated Brillouin scattering （SBS） properties of light beams carrying orbit angular momentum （OAM）. The phase conjugation of light beams carrying OAM is experimentally achieved in an SBS mirror with a random phase plate. The spectrum and the pulse width compression of SBS light are measured. It is shown that the phenomena of pulse compression is observed and OAM conservation is confirmed in the SBS process. The OAM transfer from photons to phonons may find potential applications in photon-phonon conversion-based signal-processing schemes by using OAM multiplexing.

A novel beam-steering external cavity diode laser using an intracavity lead lanthanum zirconate titanate （PLZT） electro-optic ceramic deflector is proposed and demonstrated experimentally. The laser consists of a semiconductor laser with single mode fiber coupled output, polarization controller, PLZT electro-optic ceramic deflector, and output concave mirror. By applying proper driven electrical signals on the PLZT electro-optic deflector, the beam deflection angle achieves 5.8 mrad at 1 000 V. A high-repetition-rate eye-safe optical parametric oscillator （OPO）, using a non-critically phase-matched KTP crystal intracavity pumped by a passively Q-switched Nd：GdVO4/Cr^4＋：YAG laser, is experimentally demonstrated. The conversion efficiency for the average power is 7% from pump diode input to OPO signal output and the slope efficiency is up to 10.3%. With an incident pump power of 7,3 W, the compact intracavity OPO （IOPO） cavity, operating at 15 kHz, produces an average power of 0.57 W at 1570 nm with a pulse width as short as 6 ns. The peak power at 1570 nm is higher than 6.3 kW.

If a diode pumped solid state laser is used in a holographic storage system, its multi longitudinal modes may damage the angular selectivity of the hologram and introduce more cross talk in the system. By theoretical analysis, we found that with adopting the speckle multiplexing scheme, holographic systems are no longer sensitive to the multi longitudinal modes of the laser source, and consequently the damage described above could be well suppressed. Moreover, the following high density storage experimental results also express strong advocacy of this conclusion. This result may greatly prompt the miniaturization of a holographic storage system.
