Electrochemical and microstructural characterization of cyclic redox behaviour of SOFC anodes

The oxidation of Ni to NiO in solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) anode will result in large bulk volume change, which may change the interfaces of the two phases in the anode cermet and thus may cause significant performance degradation. The reduction and oxidation (redox) of the Ni/YSZ cermet were studied at 800 ℃. Anodic polarization measurements were performed before and after redox cycles. The anode current density at an overpotential of 100 mV kept decreasing during the whole redox treatment. It decreased from 19.11 to 7.95 mA·cm-2 after two redox cycles. Anode supported unit cell was assembled for cell′s discharge measurements. Cell performance declined after each redox cycle. The maximum power density decreased from 126.28 to 40.32 mW·cm-2. The microstructural changes after redox cycling were recorded using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The results reveal that after re-oxidation, the Ni gets coarse and has a higher porosity; the nickel network structure turns to be desultory.

solid oxide fuel cell is attracting more attention in recent years for its lower pollution emission and high energy convert efficiency. La0.9Sr0.1Ga0.8Mg0.2O3-δis a new kind of electrolyte for intermediate temperature SOFC. In this paper, La0.9Sr0.1Ga0.8Mg0.2O3-δ(LSGM) was prepared by solid state reaction method and formed by tape casting process to make a planar electrolyte. The appropriate amount of the dispersive was obtained by viscosity test. The densities of sintered samples increase with the increasing sintering temperature. It was found that the relative density of electrolyte can approach the value of 95 % by the isostatic pressing treatment of the green tape. The average thermal expansion coefficient of the LSGM is 11 .4×10-6 /℃at temperature range (200 ~ 1200℃). Measurements of the current-voltage and power-current characteristics of the Hi-Air cell show that the open-circuit voltage is 1.067 V at 800℃, peak current density is 0.56 A·cm -2 and the maximum power output is 0.147 W·cm -2.

solid oxide fuel cells(SOFCs)are widely recognized as efficient energy sources that have the potential to shape the future of energy *** various types of SOFCs,the low-temperature operation of protonconducting SOFCs(H–SOFCs)offers distinct advantages for wide commercialization compared to oxygen-ion conducting SOFCs(O–SOFCs).However,the commercialization of H–SOFCs is hindered by several challenges,including slow oxygen reduction kinetics and long-term instability of cathode *** electrochemical performance of the cathode system in H–SOFCs is limited by the poor proton conductivity of the cathode material and the scarcity of surface reaction ***,the presence of undesirable phases induced by elements such as Cr and CO_(2)adversely affects the chemical stability and catalytic activity of the *** stress arising from the mismatch in coefficient of thermal expansion between the cathode and electrolyte further adds to the ***,this comprehensive review presents underlying mechanisms and potential solutions to overcome the challenges in H–SOFCs,leading to higher efficiency and wider commercialization of H–SOFCs.

A deep learning based homogenization framework is proposed to link the microstructures of porous nickel/yttriastabilized zirconia anodes in solid oxide fuel cells(SOFCs)to their effective macroscopic properties.A variety of microstructures are generated by the discrete element method and the meso‑scale kinetic Monte Carlo ***,the finite element method and the homogenization theory are used to calculate the effective elastic modulus(E),Poisson’s ratio(υ),shear modulus(G)and coefficient of thermal expansion(CTE)of representative volume *** addition,the triple-phase boundary length density(LTPB)is also *** convolutional neural network(CNN)based deep learning model is trained to find the potential relationship between the microstructures and the five effective macroscopic *** comparison between the ground truth and the predicted values of the new samples proves that the CNN model has an excellent predictive *** indicates that the CNN model could be used as an effective alternative to numerical simulations and homogenization because of its accurate and rapid prediction *** the deep learning-based homogenization framework could potentially accelerate the continuum modeling of SOFCs for microstructure optimization.

BaFeO_(3-δ)-derived perovskites are promising cathodes for intermediate temperature solid oxide fuel *** activity of these perovskites depends on the number of oxygen vacancies in their lattice,which can be tuned by cationic *** first-principle calculations show that Ag is a promising substitute for the Fe site,resulting in a reduced oxygen vacancy formation energy compared with the pristine BaFeO_(3-δ).Ag has limited solubility in perovskites,and its introduction generates an Ag metal secondary phase,which influences the cathode *** this work,we investigate the matter,using a Ba0:9La0:1Fe_(1-x)AgxO_(3-δ)series of materials as a case *** the limited solubility of Ag in Ba0:9La0:1Fe_(1-x)AgxO_(3-δ),we aim to distinguish the effects of Ag substitution from those of the Ag secondary *** observed that Ag substitution increases the number of oxygen vacancies,confirming our calculations,and facilitates the oxygen ***,Ag substitution lowers the number of holes,in this way reducing the electronic p-type *** the other hand,Ag metal positively affects the electronic conductivity and helps the redistribution of the electronic charge at the cathode-electrolyte interface.

Development of the doped lanthanum gallate solid electrolytes in the recent years was reviewed. The structure and oxygen ion transference mechanism were discussed. Effects of alkali earths, transition metals, and impurities on electrical conductivity of the doped lanthanum gallates were also discussed. The applications of doped lanthanum gallate were described. The current problems and corresponding strategies were explored.

Effects of small amount of Ca doping in La site in LaCoO 3-based oxide on th e synthesis and electrical conductivity were investigated by using X-ray diffra ction (XRD), differential scanning calorimetry and thermogravimetry (DSC/TG), or dinary four-probe dc measurement methods. La 0.8Sr 0.2-xCa x Co 0.9Fe 0.1O 3-δ (LSCCF, 0≤x≤0.1) prepared by solid r eact ion synthesis is all of a single phase and the calcined process may be divided i nt o three stages: (1) decomposition of reactants; (2) formation of LaCoO 3-based oxides; and (3) formation of LSCCF solid solution. The maximum of electrical co nductivity of the LSCCF composites is above 100 S·cm -1 and the co nduction me chanism is attributed to the adiabatic-hopping of p-type small polarons.
