Interactions between soil conservation and dryland farming of heterogeneously eroding areas in Loess Hills,China

The unidirectional impacts of soil conservation on dryland farming and local livelihood have been well ***,there are gaps in literature regarding the interactions among factors,such as labor force and financial capital,in response to soil conservation,as well as the influence of such interactions on the relationships between environmental projects and agricultural *** combining the Chinese soil Loss Equation(CSLE)model and statistical analyses,this study investigated the spatiotemporal characteristics of soil erosion while also identifying the controlling factors that affect crop and livestock *** aim was to reveal how these factors interacted to influence agriculture in two case study areas between 2000 and *** results showed that soil erosion substantially declined as a consequence of soil conservation,while the output from crop farming increased,indicating that there was a synergy between soil conservation and dryland farming in both the districts,over time;and factors facilitating crop farming,such as labor force,agricultural machinery,and irrigation,appeared to exert an adverse effect on livestock farming in both areas,implying a tradeoff between livestock and crop farming in the context of programs such as the Grain for Green Program(GGP)in the Loess *** a tradeoff is a result of the competition for cropland and labor that exists due to grazing prohibition and rural-urban ***,policy-related resolutions are required to address the land use conflicts and migration-related rural labor losing due to implementation of the GGP in the Loess Hills.

The objective of this paper is to provide an overview of soil conservation and sediment control in Europe from the perspectives of policy makers seeking solutions to current problems of soil loss and *** and information are derived from detailed reports written in support of the European soils Directive,that addressed the threats facing European soils and from workshops organised to identify best practices and achieve sustainable land use in different EU *** were organised by the SCAPE(Strategies for soil conservation and Protection in Europe) supporting *** technical measures used to limit erosion and restore ecosystems,there is much similarity between Europe and *** main soil and land degradation problems that soil conservation practitioners and scientists have to address are caused by land use and management impacts that have proved difficult or impossible to resist because of political *** political leadership that regarded soil conservation and sediment control,as a cornerstone of sustainable economic development,which seemed to be present eight years,is urgently required once more.

conservation agriculture(CA)is considered as a suitable technique for soil erosion control,productivity enhancement,and improved economic *** investigate these issues,an experiment was conducted under rainfed conditions using grass vegetation strip(VS)with minimum tillage,organic amendments and weed mulch during June 2007-October 2011 at Dehradun,Uttarakhand in the Indian Himalayan *** showed that the mean wheat equivalent yield was47%higher in the plots under with CA compared with conventional agriculture in a maize-wheat crop *** runoff coefficients and soil loss with CA plots were45%less and54%less than conventional agriculture *** average,after the harvest of maize,soil moisture conservation up to 90 cm soil depth for wheat crop was 108%higher under CA than conventional agriculture *** net return from the plots with CA was 85%higher,and when expressed net return per tonne of soil loss,it was four and half times higher than conventional *** demonstrate that the suitable CA practice(a grass strip of Palmarosa with applied organic amendments(farmyard manure,vermicompost and poultry manure)along with weed mulching under conservation tillage)enhances system productivity,reduces runoff,soil loss and conserve soil moisture.&2015 International Research and Training Center on Erosion and Sedimentation and China Water and Power *** and Hosting by Elsevier *** is an open access article under the CC BY-NC-ND license(http://***/licenses/by-nc-nd/4.0/).

Energy efficiency and soil conservation in conventional,minimum tillage and no-tillage

The objective of this research was to determine the capacity of a soil tillage system in soil conservation,in productivity and in energy *** minimum tillage and no-tillage systems represent good alternatives to the conventional(plough)system of soil tillage,due to their conservation effects on soil and to the good production of crops(Maize,96%-98%of conventional tillage for minimum tillage,and 99.8%of conventional tillage for no till;Soybeans,103%-112%of conventional tillage for minimum tillage and 117%of conventional tillage for no till;Wheat,93%-97%of conventional tillage for minimum tillage and 117%of conventional tillage for no *** choice of the right soil tillage system for crops in rotation help reduce energy consumption,thus for maize:97%-98%energy consumption of conventional tillage when using minimum tillage and 91%when using no-tillage;for soybeans:98%energy consumption of conventional tillage when using minimum tillage and 93 when using no-tillage;for wheat:97%-98%energy consumption of conventional tillage when using minimum tillage and 92%when using *** efficiency is in relation to reductions in energy use,but also might include the efficiency and impact of the tillage system on the cultivated *** all crops in rotation,energy efficiency(energy produced from 1 MJ consumed)was the best in no-tillage-10.44 MJ ha-1 for maize,6.49 MJ ha-1 for soybean,and 5.66 MJ ha-1 for *** analysis of energy-efficiency in agricultural systems includes the energy consumed-energy produced-energy yield comparisons,but must be supplemented by soil energy efficiency,based on the conservative effect of the agricultural *** then will the agricultural system be sustainable,durable in agronomic,economic and ecological *** implementation of minimum and no-tillage soil systems has increased the organic matter content from 2%to 7.6%and water stable aggregate content from 5.6%to 9.6%,at 0-30 cm depth,as compared to the conventional

Temporal variations in runoff and soil loss in relation to soil conservation practices in catchments in Shiwaliks of lower Himalayas

The soil conservation strategies adopted in the catchments of Shiwaliks,the most fragile region in the Himalayan ecosystem,failed to serve their purpose after a few years of their execution.A study was carried out in four differentially-treated catchments to monitor the variation in runoff and soil *** treatments imposed during 1988 included fencing,planting native vegetation and engineering structures in catchment I;planting native vegetation and fencing in catchment II;fencing alone in catchment III in addition to an untreated catchment *** soil loss during the initial years(1989–1995)of imposition of the treatments was lowest(25.2 t ha^(-1))in catchment I,treated to the maximum extent and highest(43.3 t ha^(-1))in untreated catchment *** the later period(1996–2006)the trends reversed,i.e.,catchment IV recorded the lowest(14.1 t ha^(-1))soil loss whereas catchment I recorded the highest(23.4 t ha^(-1))soil loss despite the fact that there was no change in the status of soil conservation or the characteristics of the *** runoff was 71%higher in untreated catchment than in treated catchments initially and this difference decreased to 27%during the later period.

The adoption of no till was a major turning point in the transformation of agriculture in *** paper describes the process of adoption of no till,and the impacts of this on agricultural *** previously,soil erosion was so extreme and pervasive as to threaten the economic viability and survival of the industry,today with the majority of production under no till,Argentina produces more than ever in the *** paper also illustrates how,after first focusing on technology adoption(no-till),the system in Argentina has now broadened to include the concepts of conservation Agriculture(CA)and Sustainable Land Management(SLM).These strategic moves have contributed to an agricultural industry in Argentina that is more economically and environmentally sustainable than that of the past.

Social perception of soil conservation benefits in Kondoa eroded area of Tanzania

A soil conservation project was implemented in Tanzania for over 30 *** study applied a socio-economic approach to examine and analyse the benefits of soil conservation in the Kondoa eroded area of Tanzania by conducting a household survey of 240 *** study findings show that 89%and 70%of respondents consider soil conservation activities have increased vegetation and soil fertility,*** soil erosion was perceived by 68%of respondents,increased firewood by 98%,increased fodder by 50%,high crop yields by 56%,and food sufficiency by 68%.These are the outcomes of conservation tillage,integrated farming and use of organic fertilizers,controlled stall feeding,agroforestry,construction of cut off drains,contour bunds and contour ridges cultivation,which are the main land use practices in the *** to extension services,household sizes,long term land ownership,crop incomes and awareness of soil conservation project were found to determine the level of participation in soil *** challenges are the lack of sustainability of those activities because of a recent policy decision to withdraw conservation *** the challenge,this study concluded that past government efforts on soil conservation activities initiated since the early 1970s through decentralization,institutional collaboration,socioeconomic support to farmers and continuous local community participation in restoring the degraded ecosystem of Kondoa have contributed to ensure environmental and socio-economic sustainability in the area.

soil conservation of National Key Ecological Function Areas

soil erosion is a significant factor in the deterioration of the ecological environment and soil conservation is an important ecological service of National Key Ecological Function Areas in China. Here, climate, terrain, soil and vegetation cover, soil erosion and soil conservation spatial data in 25 National Key Ecological Function Areas in 2010 were analyzed using the Universal soil Loss Equation by Arc GIS tool. We found that soil conservation effects due to vegetation cover and soil conservation measures are obvious and that micro and slight erosion areas in National Key Ecological Function Areas have increased by 26.2%. The area of intensive erosion decreased by 25.1%, and the soil conservation amount in southern National Key Ecological Function Areas is high. The conservation amount of soil nutrients within National Key Ecological Function Areas is related to amount of soil conservation and content of each nutrient element in soil. The sequence of nutrient conservation amounts from high to low is soil organic carbon, total K, total N and total P in soil. The conservation amount of various soil nutrient elements in the Alkin Grassland function area and Yunnan and Sichuan function area was highest. Based on our findings, we recommend the strengthening of vegetation protection and management in the areas with high per unit area soil erosion, enhancement of vegetation cover and improvement of soil conservation measures in order to improve soil conservation functions and reduce soil nutrient losses. Vegetation protection and soil conservation measures should be consolidated in the areas with high potential erosion to prevent further deterioration.
