Salinity(sodium chloride,NaCl)from anthropogenic sources is a persistent contaminant that negatively affects freshwater taxa.Amphibians can be susceptible to salinity,but some species are innately or adaptively tolerant.Physiological mechanisms mediating tolerance to salinity are still unclear,but changes in osmoregulatory hor-mones such as corticosterone(CORT)and aldosterone(ALDO)are prime candidates.We exposed larval barred tiger salamanders(Ambystoma mavortium)to environmentally relevant NaCl treatments(<32–4000 mg·L-1)for 24 days to test effects on growth,survival,and waterborne CORT responses.Of those sampled,we also quantiﬁed waterborne ALDO from a subset.Using a glucocorticoid antagonist(RU486),we also experimentally suppressed CORT signaling of some larvae to determine if CORT mediates effects of salinity.There were no strong differ-ences in survival among salinity treatments,but salinity reduced dry mass,snout–vent length,and body condition while increasing water content of larvae.High survival and sublethal effects demonstrated that salamanders were physiologically challenged but could tolerate the experimental concentrations.CORT signaling did not attenuate sublethal effects of salinity.Baseline and stress-induced(after an acute stressor,shaking)CORT were not inﬂu-enced by salinity.ALDO was correlated with baseline CORT,suggesting it could be difﬁcult to decouple the roles of CORT and ALDO.Future studies comparing ALDO and CORT responses of adaptively tolerant and previously unexposed populations could be beneﬁcial to understand the roles of these hormones in tolerance to salinity.Nev-ertheless,our study enhances our understanding of the roles of corticosteroid hormones in mediating effects of a prominent anthropogenic stressor.

Owing to its anisotropic optical and electrical properties,rhenium diselenide(ReSe2)has garnered considerable attention recently as a candidate material for polarization-sensitive photodetectors.However,the direct and controllable synthesis of large-sized ReSe2 with a uniform thickness is still a great challenge.Herein,we have refined the synthesis method to obtain uniform monolayer ReSe2 flakes with a size of up to^106μm on sapphire via an ambient-pressure chemical vapor deposition technique using Na promoter from sodium chloride.Interestingly,optical pump-probe spectroscopy revealed a fast switching from saturable absorption(SA)to absorption enhancement(AE)in subpicosecond time scale,followed by a slower decay induced by exciton recombination.Furthermore,both AE and SA signals exhibited clear angular dependence with a periodicity of 180°,which reflected the dichroism in nonlinear absorption dynamics.In addition,the photocarrier dynamics including free-carrier transport and subpicosecond relaxation due to exciton formation or surface trapping was probed using time resolved terahertz spectroscopy.We believe that our study serves as a reference for atomically controlled synthesis of large-sized ReSe2 and provides useful insights on its optoelectronic properties for novel device applications.

Supercapacitor is a new type of energy storage device,which has the advantages of high-power property and long cycle life.In this study,three-dimensional graphene(3 D-GN)with oxygen doping and porous structure was prepared from graphene oxide(GO)by an inexpensive sodium chloride(NaCl)template,as a promising electrode material for the supercapacitor.The structure,morphology,specific surface area,pore size,of the sample were characterized by XRD,SEM,TEM and BET techniques.The electrochemical performances of the sample were tested by CV and CDC techniques.The 3 D-GE product is a threedimensional nano material with hierarchical porous structures,its specific surface area is much larger than that of routine stacked graphene(GN),and it contains a large number of mesoporous and macropores,a small amount of micropores.The capacitance characteristics of the 3 D-GN electrode material are excellent,showing high specific capacitance(173.5 F·g^(-1)at 1 A·g^(-1)),good rate performance(109.2 F·g^(-1)at 8 A·g^(-1))and long cycle life(88%capacitance retention after 10,000 cycles at 8 A·g^(-1))

Isostructural Phase Transition of TiN under High Pressure

In situ high-pressure energy dispersive x-ray diffraction experiments on polycrystalline powder TiN with NaCl-type structure have been conducted with the pressure up to 30.1GPa by using a diamond anvil cell instrument with synchrotron radiation at room temperature. The experimental results suggest that an isostructural phase transition might exist at about 7GPa as revealed by the discontinuity of V/V0 with pressure.

The prediction of the thermodynamic properties of ternary systems from the properties of their sub-binary systems is of great importance to phase diagram calculations. In the present study, a new asymmetric model which has more clear physical significance has been developed for evaluating the ternary thermodynamic properties from its three binary components. The model is considered to be rigorous in the case where the pseudobinary systems of fixed X2/X3 are regular are regular solution. The application of new model to the prediction of ternary enthalpies of mixing for Bi-Ga-Sn, Au-Ag-Sn and NaCl-KCl-CaCl2 systems shows that the calculated results by new model are closer to experimental data than those by Toop's model.

This paper discussed the possibility of obtaining electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) responses of zinc rich paints (ZRP) using serial double-cell (SDC). The influence of counter electrode was outlined. An equivalent circuit (ES) for the double-cell was then discussed. The relationship between EC, the time constant, the parameters in EC of SDC and those of two single sells was discussed. The results gained by serial double cell test are consistent with those of single cell test. It can be concluded that double cell test method can be used to study ZRP completely.

Influence of inorganic salt on aerobic biodegradability of dyestuffs

In this paper, the influence of inorganic salt on aerobic biodegradability of dyestuffs was studied by means of semi-continuous activated sludge method. It was found that: biodegradability of dyestuffs would decrease with the increase of the concentration of NaCl; however, biodegradability in the condition of NaCl = 30 g/L was better than that in the condition of NaCl = 15 g/L; in the three NaCl conditions, biodegradability of tested dyestuffs followed the following order: NaCl = 0 g/L>NaCl = 30 g/L>NaCl = 15 g/L.

Predicting hydrate forming pressure of pure alkanes in the presence of inhibitors

An inherent problem with natural gas production or transmission is the formation of gas hydrates, which can lead to safety hazards for production/transportation systems, and substantial economic risks. Hydrate inhibition with different inhibitors such as, methanol, ethylene glycol （EG）, triethylene glycol （TEG）, and sodium chloride solution continues to play a critical role in many operations. An understanding of when the hydrates form in the presence of these hydrate inhibitors, is therefore necessary to overcome hydrate problems. Several thermodynamic models have been proposed for predicting the hydrate formation conditions in aqueous solutions containing methanol/glycols and electrolytes. However, available models have limitations that include the types of liquid, compositions of fluids, and inhibitors used. The aim of this study is to develop a simple-to-use correlation for accurate prediction of hydrate-forming pressures of pure alkanes in the presence of different hydrate inhibitors, where the obtained results illustrate good agreement with the reported experimental data.

Desorption of Methylene Blue Adsorbed on Activated Carbon from Cocoa Pod Shell

Environmental protection has become a concern for the world. For this reason, the objective of this work is to remove methylene blue adsorbed on activated carbon. The coal used comes from cocoa pod shells. Before pyrolysis, the shells were ground, sieved and impregnated with orthophosphoric acid. Before desorption, the activated carbons were initially saturated with MB. These saturated coals were brought into contact with a sodium chloride (NaCl) solution and then stirred. The evolution of the resorbed MB concentration was monitored by spectrophotometry. The desorption tests showed a remarkable elimination from the first 10 minutes. The desorption kinetics comprises two phases: a rapid kinetics between 0 and 30 minutes and a slow kinetics between 30 and 60 minutes. The desorption of the dye reaches a concentration aqual to 0.84 mg/l at pH = 4 at temperature = 80°C. For modeling, the coefficient of the Langmuir II model is greater than or equal to O.9893. The model of Langmuir III is less than or equal to 0.9373. The Freundlich model coefficient is 0.9842 or less. The desorption is thefore carried out on energy-homogeneous adsorption sites and without any interaction between the adsorbed cations of the dye. Experimental parameters such as pH, temperature and concentration of sodium chloride (NaCl) solution influence the desorption of MB. And the model of Langmuir II describes well the process of desorption of the MB.
