Comparative study on the inhibiting mechanism of inhibitor with primary amine groups and quaternary ammonium groups for sodium bentonite

Shale hydration and swelling is the main obstacle to the development of shale gas utilizing water-based drilling fluids(WBDFs).In this work,the inhibition mechanism of alkylammonium inhibitor and alkylamine inhibitor adsorbed on sodium bentonite(Na+Bent)are investigated using infrared spectroscopy(FT-IR),scanning electron microscopy(SEM),X-ray diffraction(XRD),zeta potential,particle size distribution tests,and thermogravimetry analysis(TGA).The results suggest that HTB and HMD can be inserted into the interlamination of Na+Bent and minimize the basal spacing compared to hydrated Na+Bent.HTB and HMD are inserted between the Na+Bent layers in a single-layer tiled manner and replace the sodium ions that are firmly fixed between the layers.Eventually,water molecules are removed from the interlayer Na+Bent.The interaction between the quaternary ammonium group and Na+Bent is more significant than between the primary amine group and Na+Bent.The inhibition performance suggests that HTB inhibits Na+Bent hydration and swelling more substantially than other inhibitors,indicating that the inhibition performance of the two quaternary ammonium groups is greater than that of the two primary amine groups.Therefore,HTB can be used as intercalation inhibition in WBDFs and has tremendous application value.

Inhibition roles of molybdate and borate on Q235 steel corrosion in resistance reducing agent

The effects of Na_(2)MoO_(4) and Na_(2)B_(4)O_(7) on corrosion behavior of Q235 steel in resistance reducing agent(RRA)containing sodium bentonite were studied by mass loss,scanning electron microscopy and electrochemical measurement.The results showed that both the independent and mixed additions of Na_(2)MoO_(4) and/or Na_(2)B_(4)O_(7),can reduce the corrosion rate of Q235 steel in RRA containing sodium bentonite.And the inhibition effect of Na_(2)MoO_(4) and/or Na_(2)B_(4)O_(7)increased with their dosage increase.With the same dosage,the inhibition efficiency of the mixed addition of Na_(2)MoO_(4) and Na_(2)B_(4)O_(7),was higher than that of their independent addition.The passivation effect of Q235 steel was easy to obtain in the RRA with the mixed addition of Na_(2)MoO_(4) and Na_(2)B_(4)O_(7).The optimized inhibitor for the RRA containing sodium bentonite was the mixture of Na_(2)B_(4)O_(7) and Na_(2)MoO_(4) with a total concentration of 1.5 wt.%.Furthermore,the increase in corrosion potential E_(corr) and the decrease in corrosion current density i_(cor) in carbon steel were one of the important criteria for the formation of passivation film.

Experimental evaluation of thiamine as a new clay swelling inhibitor

This study aims at evaluating the performance of thiamine as a new eco-friendly shale inhibitor in water-based drilling fluids(WBDFs).The evaluation experiments include sedimentation,bentonite inhibition,filtration,zeta potential,thermal gravimetric analysis,scanning electron microscopy,X-ray diffraction,shale cuttings recovery,linear swelling and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy(FTIR).The performance of thiamine was compared to potassium chloride.In contrast to deionized water,the aqueous solution of thiamine exhibited greater power to inhibit montmorillonite(Mt)dispersion,much more Mt loading capacity(280 g/L)and fluid loss,lower Mt mass loss,larger aggregated Mt particles,lower interlayer space of the Mt particles,less shale cuttings disintegration and lower linear swelling.Adsorption of thiamine on Mt led to a significant shift in the value of zeta potential(from-17.1 to+8.54 mV).Thiamine demonstrated superior inhibitive performance than potassium chloride.FTIR analysis confirmed that thiamine is adsorbed on Mt particles.The compatibility test revealed the compatibility of thiamine with conventional WBDF additives.It was concluded that the main probable inhibition mechanisms of thiamine are the cation exchange and Mt surface coating.In view of its prominent inhibition capacity and great environmental acceptability,thiamine is a promising inhibitor for drilling in water-sensitive formations.
