Multi-dimensional assessment of socioeconomic impacts of hydropower development—A case in the Upper Chuan River

The positive role of hydropower in climate change adaption is well accepted by the international community and has been highlighted many times,while the understanding of its impacts on socioeconomic development remains at the stage of rough estimation and qualitative *** application of a multi-regional CGE model in this paper provides an effective tool for quantitatively assessing the socioeconomic impacts of hydropower development,reflecting its positive *** case study on the Upper Chuan River details the steps of model development,including impact mechanism analysis,regional delimitation,macro closure setting,shock selection,and database *** results show the enormous economic benefits of hydropower development using various indicators such as consumption,investment,GDP,employment,and *** study indicates that hydropower development is a win-win energy development mode which can help to realize the integration of sustainable development and climate change ***,potential improvements to the model are discussed.

The energy transition has unique and profound socioeconomic impacts for the developing and coal-producing countries,due to the distinctive country's *** overall development context and challenges comprising technological pathways,investment,value added,employment and inequality must be *** the case of Indonesia,as one of the world's largest coal-producing,the archipelagic nature with various island topography,sociocultural diversity as well as very high population really needs a comprehensive energy transition research considering the above aspects,which is so far still ***,this current study presents an integrated assessment of technological change and socioeconomics impact for power transition pathways in Indonesia using the Integrated MARKAL-EFOM System(TIMES)and their socioeconomics implications using the Miyazawa Input–Output Model(MIOM).Four scenarios were applied namely business-as-usual(BAU),100%renewable energy(100%RE),Paris Agreement 1.5℃ without coal phase-out(PA1.5),and that of with coal phase-out(PA1.5PO).The results show that by 2060,100%RE without applying carbon capture and storage(CCS)creates an extreme power flexibility which requires ample energy storage but does not attain *** meet the 1.5℃ carbon budget,PA1.5 and PA1.5PO require substantial renewable energy deployment,particularly in utility-scale solar PV,energy storage,and low-carbon *** two scenarios exhibit a notable increase in total installed capacity,ranging 3.37–3.83 times higher than the BAU ***1.5PO,plays an increasing role natural gas as bridge fuel in advanced gas power from 2035 to its peak in *** scenarios require a higher installed capacity compared to BAU,corresponding to a substantial total investment cost of almost 2.5 times in *** MIOM results show that these scenarios have a stronger impact on household income and employment compared to ***,the impact on value added(VA)only surpasses BAU

Payments for Watershed Services and Practices in China:Achievements and Challenges

Implementation of payments for watershed services(PWS) has been regarded as a promising approach to coordinating the interests of upstream and downstream ecosystem services stakeholders. There is growing concern about whether PWS programs have achieved their original environmental goals of improving water quality and quantity, as well as the ancillary objective of increasing the welfare of local people. We start with an overview of PWS schemes and focus on their particularity and implementation mechanisms in China. We proceed to review 62 active PWS cases and examine their environmental performance in detail. The resulting findings show that PWS schemes have been able to reduce water pollution to some extent by establishing collaborative upstream/downstream watershed management policies, thereby improving water quality and quantity, as well as by making government officials more responsible for water resource management. In addition, their continued effectiveness in light of present challenges such as water-quality data availability is discussed. Chinese PWS schemes and their implementation mechanisms also provide information useful in monitoring environmental outcomes and guiding future designs of PWS programs in other regions.

Measuring Natural Hazard-Related Disasters through Self-Reports

Exposure to multiple natural hazard-related disasters will become more common due to climate *** article reports on the development and validation of a cumulative measure of exposure to natural hazard-related disasters(2013–2017)at the area level,and an individual-level measure of disaster impact using data from the Longitudinal Cohort Study on the Filipino Child and linked data from the International Disaster Database(EM-DAT).Caregiver reports of cumulative exposure to disasters had statistically significant associations with disasters reported by neighborhood officials and with disasters in *** ecometric techniques we generated a reliable community average measure of exposure to natural hazard-related *** on neighbor but not individual self-reports this exogenous measure of disaster exposure in the local area was more strongly related to EM-DAT and official neighborhood reports than individual *** capture household variation we developed an individual-level measure of disaster *** impact was associated with measures of exposure(individual and community average),community ratings by officials,and EM-DAT but only moderately associated with the community average *** the community average and disaster impacts measures were associated with household income and the adequacy of income in households.
