Infiltration,runoff,and slope stability behaviors of infinite slope with macropores based on an improved Green–Ampt model

Infiltration–runoff–slope instability mechanism of macropore slope under heavy rainfall is *** paper studied its instability mechanism with an improved Green–Ampt(GA)model considering the dual-porosity(i.e.,matrix and macropore)and ponding condition,and proposed the infiltration equations,infiltration–runoff coupled model,and safety factor calculation *** show that the infiltration processes of macropore slope can be divided into three stages,and the proposed model is rational by a comparative *** wetting front depth of the traditional unsaturated slope is 17.2%larger than that of the macropore slope in the early rainfall stage and 27%smaller than that of the macropore slope in the late rainfall ***,macropores benefit the slope stability in the early rainfall but not in the *** flow does not occur initially but becomes pronounced with increasing rainfall *** equal depth of the wetting front in the two domains is regarded as the onset criteria of macropore *** analysis shows that macropore flow is delayed by increasing proportion of macropore domain(ω_(f)),whereas promoted by increasing ratio of saturated permeability coefficients between the two domains(μ).The increasing trend of ponding depth is sharp at first and then grows ***,when rainfall duration is less than 3 h,ωf andμhave no significant effect on the safety factor,whereas it decreases with increasingωf and increases with increasingμunder longer duration(≥3 h).With the increase ofω_(f),the slope maximum instability time advances by 10.5 h,and with the increase ofμ,the slope maximum instability time delays by 3.1 h.

Evaluation of slope stability through rock mass classification and kinematic analysis of some major slopes along NH-1A from Ramban to Banihal, North Western Himalayas

The network of Himalayan roadways and highways connects some remote regions of valleys or hill slopes,which is vital for India’s socio-economic *** to natural and artificial factors,frequency of slope instabilities along the networks has been increasing over last few *** of stability of natural and artificial slopes due to construction of these connecting road networks is significant in safely executing these roads throughout the *** rock mass classification methods are generally used to assess the strength and deformability of rock *** study assesses slope stability along the NH-1A of Ramban district of North Western *** structurally and non-structurally controlled rock mass classification systems have been applied to assess the stability conditions of 14 *** evaluating the stability of these slopes,kinematic analysis was performed along with geological strength index(GSI),rock mass rating(RMR),continuous slope mass rating(CoSMR),slope mass rating(SMR),and Q-slope in the present *** SMR gives three slopes as completely unstable while CoSMR suggests four slopes as completely *** stability of all slopes was also analyzed using a design chart under dynamic and static conditions by slope stability rating(SSR)for the factor of safety(FoS)of 1.2 and 1 respectively.Q-slope with probability of failure(PoF)1%gives two slopes as stable *** slope angle has been determined based on the Q-slope safe angle equation and SSR design chart based on the *** value ranges given by different empirical classifications were RMR(37-74),GSI(27.3-58.5),SMR(11-59),and CoSMR(3.39-74.56).Good relationship was found among RMR&SSR and RMR&GSI with correlation coefficient(R 2)value of 0.815 and 0.6866,***,a comparative stability of all these slopes based on the above classification has been performed to identify the most critical slope along this road.

Multi-layer slopes are widely found in clay residue receiving fields.A generalized horizontal slice method(GHSM)for assessing the stability of multi-layer slopes that considers the energy dissipation between adjacent horizontal slices is *** view of the upper-bound limit analysis theory,the energy equation is derived and the ultimate failure mode is generated by comparing the sliding surface passing through the slope toe(mode A)with that below(mode B).In addition,the influence of the number of slices on the stability coefficients in the GHSM is studied and the stable value is *** to the original method(Chen’s method),the GHSM can acquire more precise results,which takes into account the energy dissipation in the inner sliding soil ***,the GHSM,limit equilibrium method(LEM)and numerical simulation method(NSM)are applied to analyze the stability of a multi-layer slope with different slope angles and the results of the safety factor and failure mode are very close in each *** ultimate failure modes are shown to be mode B when the slope angle is not more than 28°.It illustrates that the determination of the ultimate sliding surface requires comparison of multiple failure modes,not only mode A.

The Limit Equilibrium Method(LEM)is commonly used in traditional slope stability analyses,but it is time-consuming and *** to its complexity and nonlinearity involved in the evaluation process,it cannot provide a quick stability estimation when facing a large number of *** this case,the convolutional neural network(CNN)provides a better alternative.A CNN model can process data quickly and complete a large amount of data analysis in a specific situation,while it needs a large number of training *** is difficult to get enough slope data samples in practical *** study proposes a slope database generation method based on the *** were amplified from 40 typical slopes,and a sample database consisting of 20000 slope samples was *** sample database for slopes covered a wide range of slope geometries and soil layers’physical and mechanical *** CNN trained with this sample database was then applied to the stability prediction of 15 real slopes to test the accuracy of the CNN *** results show that the slope stability prediction method based on the CNN does not need complex calculation but only needs to provide the slope coordinate information and physical and mechanical parameters of the soil layers,and it can quickly obtain the safety factor and stability state of the ***,the prediction accuracy of the CNN trained by the sample database for slope stability analysis reaches more than 99%,and the comparisons with the BP neural network show that the CNN has significant superiority in slope stability ***,the CNN can predict the safety factor of real *** particular,the combination of typical actual slopes and generated slope data provides enough training and testing samples for the CNN,which improves the prediction speed and practicability of the CNN-based evaluation method in engineering practice.

slope stability prediction plays a significant role in landslide disaster prevention and *** study develops an ensemble learning-based method to predict the slope stability by introducing the random forest(RF)and extreme gradient boosting(XGBoost).As an illustration,the proposed approach is applied to the stability prediction of 786 landslide cases in Yunyang County,Chongqing,*** comparison,the predictive performance of RF,XGBoost,support vector machine(SVM),and logistic regression(LR)is systematically investigated based on the well-established confusion matrix,which contains the known indices of recall rate,precision,and ***,the feature importance of the 12 influencing variables is also *** show that the accuracy of the XGBoost and RF for both the training and testing data is superior to that of SVM and LR,revealing the superiority of the ensemble learning models(*** and RF)in the slope stability prediction of Yunyang *** the 12 influencing factors,the profile shape is the most important *** proposed ensemble learning-based method offers a promising way to rationally capture the slope *** can be extended to the prediction of slope stability of other landslide-prone areas of interest.

A comparison study between 2D and 3D slope stability analyses considering spatial soil variability

In engineering practice,the stability of a slope is often analyzed as a 2D problem assuming a plane-strain condition,which may lead to significant *** this paper,a comprehensive study is carried out to compare the results of 2D and 3D slope stability analyses,using the strength reduction method for deterministic analysis and the random field approach for probabilistic analysis,*** results of this comparison study confirm that in the deterministic stability evaluation,the 2D analysis tends to obtain a smaller factor of safety than does its 3D *** the probabilistic evaluation that considers the spatial variability of soil properties,the 2D analysis tends to yield a larger probability of failure than its 3D counterpart.A significant feature of the 3D probabilistic slope stability analysis is the presence of multiple local failures distributed along the slope longitudinal *** paper provides insights regarding the degree of errors in modeling a 3D slope as a 2D problem,which can be regarded as a complement to the previous 3D slope stability analyses.

slope stability prediction plays a significant role in landslide disaster prevention and *** paper’s reduced error pruning(REP)tree and random tree(RT)models are developed for slope stability evaluation and meeting the high precision and rapidity requirements in slope *** data set of this study includes five parameters,namely slope height,slope angle,cohesion,internal friction angle,and peak ground *** available data is split into two categories:training(75%)and test(25%)*** output of the RT and REP tree models is evaluated using performance measures including accuracy(Acc),Matthews correlation coefficient(Mcc),precision(Prec),recall(Rec),and *** applications of the aforementionedmethods for predicting slope stability are compared to one another and recently established soft computing models in the *** analysis of the Acc together with Mcc,and F-score for the slope stability in the test set demonstrates that the RT achieved a better prediction performance with(Acc=97.1429%,Mcc=0.935,F-score for stable class=0.979 and for unstable case F-score=0.935)succeeded by the REP tree model with(Acc=95.4286%,Mcc=0.896,F-score stable class=0.967 and for unstable class F-score=0.923)for the slope stability dataset The analysis of performance measures for the slope stability dataset reveals that the RT model attains comparatively better and reliable results and thus should be encouraged in further research.

Improved Statically Solvable Slice Method for slope stability Analysis

Although slice methods are simple and effective slope stability analysis approaches,they are statically *** modifications of the slice method,such as the Spencer,MorgensternPrice,and Chen-Morgenstern methods,are statically determinate and solvable as they assume the inter-slice force inclination angle;however,there is a small gap between the assumptions and actual landslide stability *** reasonable theoretical analysis,the Su slice method provides a reliable approach for determining the inter-slice force inclination angle that can be used in slice analysis to accurately analyse,calculate,and evaluate the stability of ***,the Su slice method requires further research and analysis,especially in terms of the parameter values sinλbiandρ.In this study,we investigated more accurate methods for calculating the parameters sinλbiandρ.In addition,an adjustment coefficient(μ)was introduced to improve the solution method for the inter-slice force inclination *** inter-slice force inclination and safety factors of three landslides with arc-shaped slip surfaces and one landslide with a polyline-shaped slip surface were analysed and compared using the different slice *** improved inter-slice force inclination not only satisfies the calculation of static force equilibrium condition but also satisfies the calculation of both the force and moment equilibrium *** improved method for calculating inter-slice force inclination presented the best *** safety factors calculated using the improved Su slice method were close to those obtained using numerical simulations and the Morgenstern-Price *** negligible differences among the safety factors calculated using the Su slice,improved Su slice,and M-P methods,the accuracy of the improved Su slice method was better than the M-P method in terms of inter-slice force inclination angles which can be useful to improve protection engineering design.

Numerical analysis of pile–slope stability and the soil arching around two adjacent piles

Seismic pile–slope stability analysis and the formation mechanism of soil arching have not been well studied. This study used a threedimensional(3D) finite difference to determine soil and pile parameter changes in the static and seismic stability of the pile–slope caused by the interaction between stabilizing piles. Pile–slope stability analysis was performed to determine the optimal design of piles along a slope and the corresponding failure mode involving the formation of soil arching around two adjacent piles. The Factor of Safety(FS) of the slope was evaluated using the shear strength reduction method for static and seismic analyses. The results of the analysis show that suitable pile spacing(S) and a suitable pile diameter(D) in the middle of a slope result in the maximum FS for the pile–slope system and the formation of soil arching around two adjacent piles. FS of the pile–slope increased negligibly in the seismic analysis of piles located at the slope crest and toe. An optimized pile diameter and installation location afforded the maximum FS for the slope that corresponded to a specified slope failure mode for different pile locations. A pile spacing S ≤ 2.5D for piles installed in the middle of the slope is suggested for increasing the static and seismic pile–slope stability.
