The present paper finds out that the geometric entity which characterizes the best Lipschitz constants for the Bezier nets and Bernstein polynomials over a simplex sigma is an angle Phi determined by sigma, and proves that (1) if f(x) is Lipschitz continuous over sigma, i.e., f(x) is an element of Lip(A)(alpha,sigma), then both the n-th Bezier net and the n-th Bernstein polynomial B-n(f;x) corresponding to f(x) belong to Lip(B)(alpha,sigma) , where B = Asec(alpha)Phi; and (2) if n-th Bezier net is an element of Lip(A)(alpha,sigma), then the elevation Bezier net and the corresponding Bernstein polynomial. B-n(f,;x) also belong to Lip(A)(alpha,sigma). Furthermore, the constant B = Asec(alpha)Phi, in case (1) is best in some sense.

The mid-facet of a simplex in n-dimensional Euclidean space which was introduced quite recently is an important geometric element. An analytic expression for the mid-facet area of a simplex is firstly given. In order to obtain the expression,the exterior differential method was presented. Furthermore, the properties of the mid-facets of a simplex analogous to median lines of a triangle (such as for all mid-facets of a simplex,there exists another simplex such that its edge-lengths equal to these mid-facets area respectively, and all of the mid-facets of a simplex have a common point) were proved. Finally, by applying the analytic expression, a number of inequalities which combine edge-lengths, circumradius, median line, bisection area and facet area with the mid-facet area for a simplex were established.

An inverse theorem for the best weighted polynomial approximation of a function in Lwαp（S） is established. We also investigate Besov spaces generated by Freud weight and their connection with algebraic polynomial approximation in Lp（R）wλ, where wα is a Jacobi-type weight on S, 0simplex and Wλ is a Freud weight. For Ditzian-Totik K-functionals on LP（S）, 1≤P≤∞, we obtain a new equivalence expression.

Honokiol is a pleiotropic natural compound isolated from Magnolia and has multiple biological and clinically relevant effects,including anticancer and antimicrobial ***,the antiviral activity of honokiol has not yet been well *** we showed that honokiol had no effect on herpes simplex virus-1(HSV-1)entry,but inhibited HSV-1 viral DNA replication,gene expression and the production of new progeny *** combination of honokiol and clinical drug acyclovir augmented inhibition of HSV-1 *** results illustrate that honokiol could be a potential new candidate for clinical consideration in the treatment of HSV-1 infection alone or combination with other therapeutics.

Herpes simplex Virus 1 (HSV1) is capable of inducing two forms of infection in individuals, and the establishment of which type of infection occurs is linked to the transcriptional activation of viral α genes. One of the HSV1 α genes, ICP22, is known to have multiple functions during virus replication, but its distinct roles are still unclear. This study showed that ICP22 functions as a general repressor for certain viral and cellular promoters, and this transcriptional repression by ICP22 is independent of the specific upstream promoter element, as shown using the CAT enzyme assay system. Further work also found that VP16 interfered with ICP22 mediated transcriptional repression of the viral α4 gene, through interactions with specific elements upstream of the α4 gene promoter. These findings support the possibility that ICP22 and VP16 control transcription of HSV1α genes in a common pathway for the establishment of either viral lytic or latent infections.

To date, 29 distinct microRNAs(miRNAs) have been reported to be expressed during herpes simplex virus *** analysis of mature herpes simplex virus-1(HSV-1) miRNAs revealed five sets of miRNAs that are complementary to each other: miR-H6-5p/H1-3p, miR-H6-3p/H1-5p, H2-5p/H14-3p, miR-H2-3p/H14-5p, and miR-H7/***, the roles of individual miRNAs and consequences of this complementarity remain unclear. Here, we focus on two of these complementary miRNAs, miR-H6-5p and miR-H1-3p, using loss-of-function experiments in vitro and in a mouse model of infection using an miRNA sponge approach, including tandem multiplex artificial miRNA-binding sequences that do not match perfectly to the target miRNA inserted downstream of a green fluorescent protein reporter gene. Infection with recombinant virus expressing the miR-H6-5p sponge reduced viral protein levels and virus *** accumulation of viral proteins was also observed at early stages of infection in the presence of both an miR-H6-5p inhibitor and plasmid-expressed miR-H1-3p. Moreover, establishment of latency and reactivation did not differ between the recombinant virus expressing the miR-H6-5p sponge and wild-type HSV-1. Taken together, these data suggest that miR-H6-5p has an as-yet-unidentified role in the early stages of viral infection, and its complement miR-H1-3p suppresses this role in later stages of infection. This report extends understanding of the roles of miRNAs in infection by herpes simplex viruses, supporting a model of infection in which the production of virus and its virulent effects are tightly controlled to maximize persistence in the host and population.

Fatal fulminant herpes simplex hepatitis following surgery in an adult

We present a case of a healthy 72-year-old man with herpes simplex hepatitis (HSVH) development soon after ordinary surgery for biliary stones. A sudden onset of hepatitis associated with high fever and leukopenia emerged on postoperative day 5, followed by a rapid and lethal course (died on day 9), despite an acyclovir therapy on day 8. Postmortem liver biopsy revealed positive immunostaining for herpes simplex virus(HSV) type-1. The serum tests(available after the death) were negative for anti-HSV immunogloblulins, but positive for HSV DNA. A review of 15 cases of postsurgical HSVH along with 42 cases of non-surgical HSH showed that (1): A wide spectrum of surgical procedures was involved; and (2): High mortality (87%) associated with lower rates of ante-mortem diagnosis (20%) and acyclovir treatment (20%). Due to the difficulty in diagnosis and lethal nature, an early clinical suspension and prompt empirical anti-viral intervention are imperative for postsurgical hepatitis with undetermined etiology, characterized by fever and leucopenia.

Anti-herpes simplex virus activities of monogalactosyl diglyceride and digalactosyl diglyceride from Clinacanthus nutans, a traditional Thai herbal medicine

Objective: To evaluate the monogalactosyl diglyceride(MGDG) and digalactosyl diglyceride(DGDG) from Clinacanthus nutans(C. nutans) for their in vitro antiviral activities against herpes simplex virus type 1(HSV-1) and type 2(HSV-2) by plaque reduction ***: MGDG and DGDG were extracted with chloroform from C. nutans *** and DGDG were separated from chloroform crude extract using column chromatography, characterized by thin layer chromatography and quantified by high performance liquid chromatography. The anti HSV-1 and 2 activity against pre-treatment and posttreatment of the compounds was evaluated using plaque reduction assay. The cytotoxicity of the extract and the compounds on Vero cells were performed by MTT ***: MGDG and DGDG obtained by column chromatography showed identical profiles as standard MGDG and standard DGDG using thin layer chromatography and high performance liquid chromatography. MGDG and DGDG from C. nutans showed 100%inhibition of HSV-1 replication at the post step of infection at noncytotoxic concentration with IC50 values of 36.00 and 40.00 mg/m L, and HSV-2 at 41.00 and 43.20 mg/mL,respectively. Moreover, MGDG and DGDG from C. nutans were demonstrated to have antiherpes simplex activity at the same level as standard synthetic compounds. In contrast, pretreatment of Vero cells with MGDG and DGDG before HSV-1 and HSV-2 infection did not show inhibitory effect against these viruses. MGDG and DGDG exhibited antiviral activity against HSV-1 with selectivity index of 26.00 and 23.00 and HSV-2 of 23.30 and ***: MGDG and DGDG from C. nutans, a traditional Thai herbal medicine illustrated inhibitory activity against HSV-1 and HSV-2, probably by inhibiting the late stage of multiplication, suggesting their promising use as anti-HSV agents.
