A newly developed ocean significant wave height retrieval method from Envisat ASAR wave mode imagery

The main objective of this paper is to propose a newly developed ocean significant Wave Height (SWH) retrieval method from Envisat Advanced Synthetic Aperture Radar (ASAR) imagery. A series of wave mode imagery from January, April and May of 2011 are collocated with ERA-Interim reanalysis SWH data. Based on the matched datasets, a simplified empirical relationship between 22 types of SAR imagery parameters and SWH products is developed with the Genetic Algorithms Partial Least-Squares (GA-PLS) model. Two major features of the backscattering coefficient σ0 and the frequency parameter S10 are chosen as the optimal training feature subset of SWH retrieval by using cross validation. In addition, we also present a comparison of the retrieval results of the simplified empirical relationship with the collocated ERA-Interim data. The results show that the assessment index of the correlation coefficient, the bias, the root-mean-square error of cross validation (RMSECV) and the scattering index (SI) are 0.78, 0.07 m, 0.76 m and 0.5, respectively. In addition, the comparison of the retrieved SWH data between our simplifying model and the Jason-2 radar altimeter data is proposed in our study. Moreover, we also make a comparison of the retrieval of SWH data between our developed model and the well- known CWAVE_ENV model. The results show that satisfying retrieval results are acquired in the low-moderate sea state, but major bias appears in the high sea state, especially for SWH>5 m.

Characteristics of climate change in the “significant impact zone” affected by aerosols over eastern China in warm seasons

Through analysis of the distribution pattern and changing characteristics of atmospheric aerosols over the East Asia region during warm seasons in recent 20 a and beyond as well as their possible interac- tive relationship with a variety of meteorological elements, it is found that the high-value zone of aerosol optical depth derived from the Total Ozone Mapping Spectrometer (TOMS), its significant negative correlation zones in terms of sunshine duration (SD) and surface air temperature (SAT) and its significant positive correlation zones with low-level cloud amount (LCC) are co-located in the South China region during warm periods. Based on this finding, the region is referred to as a "significant impact zone" (SI zone) affected by aerosols. Then, a comparative analysis is made on variation differ- ences of observed SAT, SD and LCC, etc. in different regions. It is also found that the LCC is increased and the SD is decreased within the "SI zone" over eastern China during the warm season. These characteristics are more evident than those beyond the zone, while the warming trend within the zone is evidently weaker than that outside it. Studies show that since recent 20 a, under the influence of aerosols, the LCC tend to increase substantially with a clear decrease of SD and an unnoticeable warming trend within the "SI zone". Comparing with the climate change beyond the zone, the difference is significant. Therefore, the effects of atmospheric aerosols on climate is possibly one of the contri- butions to the difference of climate change existed between the southern and northern parts of the Eastern China during a warm season.

Long-Term Characterization of Sea Conditions in the East China Sea Using significant Wave Height and Wind Speed

In this study, the statistical characterization of sea conditions in the East China Sea(ECS) is investigated by analyzing a significant wave height and wind speed data at a 6-hour interval for 30 years(1980–2009), which was simulated and computed using the WAVEWATCH Ⅲ(WW3) model. The monthly variations of these parameters showed that the significant wave height and wind speed have minimum values of 0.73 m and 5.15 ms^(-1) and 1.73 m and 8.24 ms^(-1) in the month of May and December, respectively. The annual, seasonal, and monthly mean sea state characterizations showed that the slight sea generally prevailed in the ECS and had nearly the highest occurrence in all seasons and months. Additionally, the moderate sea prevailed in the winter months of December and January, while the smooth(wavelets) sea prevailed in May. Furthermore, the spatial variation of sea states showed that the calm and smooth sea had the largest occurrences in the northern ECS. The slight sea occurred mostly(above 30%) in parts of the ECS and the surrounding locations, while higher occurrences of the rough and very rough seas were distributed in waters between the southwest ECS and the northeast South China Sea(SCS). The occurrences of the phenomenal sea conditions are insignificant and are distributed in the northwest Pacific and its upper region, which includes the Southern Kyushu-Palau Ridge and Ryukyu Trench.

One year of ocean topography experiment (TOPEX) altimeter data are used to study the seasonal variations of global sea surface wind speed and significant wave height. The major wind and wave zones of the world oceans are precisely identified, their seasonal variability and characteristics are quantitatively analyzed, and the diversity of global wind speed seasonality and the variability of significant wave height in response to sea surface wind speed are also revealed.

Introduction Port wine stain (PWS) is a congenital cutaneous capillary malformation that typically presents on the face and neck,with an incidence of 0.3%-0.5% in newborns,and has no sex predominance.These lesions initially present as pink birthmarks with clear but irregular boundary,and the area varies greatly.If left untreated,they can progress in color to dark red or purple,and expand or regress over time.In severe cases,the lesion can generate hypertrophy and nodules,posing a great cosmetic challenge.One study illustrated that the average length of time to develop hypertrophy is 12 years,whereas it takes around 39 years for nodules to develop.

Increasing volumes of of non-traditional stable isotope data have brought new opportunities to gain important insights into geochemical and planetary processes.However,there is a worrysome trend that the isotopic data are interpreted in a fashion that its statistical approaches are chosen subjectively.This communication summarizes the rules regarding calculating the mean,standard deviation and relative standard deviation of a population,as well as error propagation and significant digits.These rules should be used when reporting geochemical data,especially for isotope ratios.Using two examples,I show that statistics matters in isotopic data interpretation.

High-risk symptoms and quantitative faecal immunochemical test accuracy: Systematic review and meta-analysis

BACKGROUND The quantitative faecal immunochemical test for haemoglobin(FIT) has been revealed to be highly accurate for colorectal cancer(CRC) detection not only in a screening setting, but also in the assessment of patients presenting lower bowel symptoms. Therefore, the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence has recommended the adoption of FIT in primary care to guide referral for suspected CRC in low-risk symptomatic patients using a 10 μg Hb/g faeces threshold.Nevertheless, it is unknown whether FIT′s accuracy remains stable throughout the broad spectrum of possible symptoms.AIM To perform a systematic review and meta-analysis to assess FIT accuracy for CRC detection in different clinical settings.METHODS A systematic literature search was performed using MEDLINE and EMBASE databases from inception to May 2018 to conduct a meta-analysis of prospective studies including symptomatic patients that evaluated the diagnostic accuracy of quantitative FIT for CRC detection. Studies were classified on the basis of brand,threshold of faecal haemoglobin concentration for a positive test result,percentage of reported symptoms(solely symptomatic, mixed cohorts) and CRC prevalence(significant differences between pooled sensitivity of studies with CRC prevalence < 2.5%(84.9%, 95%CI: 73.4% to 92.0%)and ≥ 2.5%(91.7%, 95%CI: 83.3% to 96.1%)(P = 0.25). Prevalence and antimicrobial resistance pattern of bacterial strains isolated from patients with urinary tract infection in Messalata Central Hospital, Libya

Objective: To investigate the prevalence of urinary tract infection among patients at Messalata Central Hospital, Libya, to identify the causative bacteria, and to explore their resistance pattern to antimicrobials. Methods: A total number of 1 153 urine samples were collected from patients, who attended daily to Messalata Central Hospital, Libya, in a study extended for one year. Antimicrobial susceptibility testing and isolates typing were done using Phoenix BD(BD diagnostic). Resistance was confirmed manually using agar disk diffusion method. Results: Of the 1 153 urine samples tested, 160(13.9%) samples were positive, from which 17 different, solely Gram negative, uropathogens were identified. Escherichia coli were the most prevalent(55.6%) bacteria, followed by Klebsiella pneumoniae subspecies pneumoniae(16.3%), Proteus mirabilis(6.3%), Pseudomonas aeruginosa(5.6%), Enterobacter cloacae and Klebsiella oxytoca(2.5%, each), Citrobacter koseri and Providencia rettgeri(1.9%, each), Acinetobacter baumannii, Enterobacter aerogenes and Proteus vulgaris(1.3%, each), and Aeromonas caviae, Citrobacter freundii, Cronobacter sakazakii, Enterobacter amnigenus biogroup 2, Pseudomonas putida and Serratia marcescens(0.6%, each). The isolated uropathogens showed increased levels of resistance ranged from 10.5% to 64.5%, with an overall resistance of 28.9%. Amikacin was the most effective antimicrobial followed by Imipenem and Meropenem(0%, 0.6% and 2.5% resistance, respectively); while, Cephalothin and Ampicillin were the least(80.6% and 90.0% resistance, respectively) effective. Conclusions: The obtained results emphasized the emergence of highly resistant bacteria to most of tested antimicrobials and raise the alarm for physicians to change their treatment pattern depending on antimicrobial susceptibility results.

A 10-year wave energy resource assessment and trends of Indonesia based on satellite observations

Wave energy resource assessment and trends around Indonesian’s ocean has been carried out by means of analyzing satellite observations. Wave energy flux or wave power can be approximated using parameterized sea states derived from satellite data. Unfortunately, only some surface parameters can be measured from remote sensing satellites, for example for ocean surface waves: significant wave height. Others, like peak wave period and energy period are not available, but can instead be estimated using empirical models. The results have been assessed by meteorological season. The assessment shows clearly where and when the wave power resource is promising around Indonesian’s ocean. The most striking result was found from June to August, in which about 30–40 kW/m(the 90 th percentile: 40–60 kW/m, the 99th percentile: 50–70 kW/m) wave power energy on average has been found around south of the Java Island. The significant trends of wave energy at the 95% level have also been studied and it is found that the trends only occurred for the extreme cases, which is the 99th percentile(i.e.,highest 1%). Wave power energy could increase up to 150 W/m per year. The significant wave heights and wave power have been compared with the results obtained from global wave model hindcast carried out by wave model WAVEWATCH III. The comparisons indicated excellent agreements.

A novel nanogel delivery of poly-α,β-polyasparthydrazide by reverse microemulsion and its redox-responsive release of 5-Fluorouridine

To achieve GSH-responsive 5-Fluorouridine(5-FU) delivery, a novel family of nanogel drug carriers has been successfully prepared. The new class of PAHy-based nanogels was prepared by the crossing-link reaction of poly-α, β-polyasparthydrazide(PAHy) chains and 3,3′-dithiodipropionic acid(DTDPA) consisting of a redox-responsive chain network. This particle highlights recent efforts in introducing a disulfide bond to drug delivery nanogel by DTDPA,and the increased release properties of complex nanogels produced excellent glutathione(GSH)-sensitivity and significant anti-tumor therapeutic efficacy. The PAHy-based nanogels were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy(FT-IR), dynamic light scattering(DLS)(nano-particle size ~200 nm), UV–vis spectrometry, X-ray diffraction(XRD) and differential scanning calorimetric(DSC). PAHy-based nanogels are promising controlledrelease carriers for the tumor-targeting delivery of the anticancer agent 5-Fluorouridine.
