To accomplish their functions, proteins have to achieve different conformations accompanied by conformational transitions. However, the relationship between the preference of amino acids and the stability of the secondary structure is still unclear. Here we perform molecular simulations on a series of helical structures. Our data show that the dissociation energy of the helical structure is related to the preference of amino acids, and the electrostatic repulsion of the residue i and i ＋ 3/4 with the same sign of charge destabilizes the alpha helix.

Age estimation on the basis of the face has been widely used in the field of human–computer interaction and intelligent surveillance. Many existing methods extract deeper global features from the facial image and achieve significant improvement on age estimation. However, local features and their relationship are important for age estimation. In this study, the authors propose a model to use local features for age estimation. The proposed model consists of three stages, preliminary abstraction stage for extracting deeper features, local feature encoding stage to model the relationship between local features and recall stage for the combination of temporary local impressions. Extensive experiments show that their proposed method outperforms previous state-of-the-art methods.

In order to make the output of a multidimensional stochastic system described by the ARMAX model track, a reference signal, the usual optimal adaptive control, generally speaking, does not lead to consistent estimates for unknown parameters. In this paper, it is shown that consistent parameter estimates can be obtained if the reference signal is not too 'simple'. Then by using an attenuating excitation method, the strongly consistent parameter estimates and the optimal adaptive control to minimize the tracking error are obtained simultaneously for a general reference signal. The existence of the optimal adaptive control is also proved.

Let X and Y be two Banach spaces,and f:X→Y be a standard ε-isometry for some ε >= 0.In this paper,by using a recent theorem established by Cheng et al.(2013–2015),we show a sufficient condition guaranteeing the following sharp stability inequality of f:There is a surjective linear operator T:Y→X of norm one so that ||T f(x)-x||<= 2ε,for all x∈X.As its application,we prove the following statements are equivalent for a standard ε-isometry f:X→Y:(i)lim inf_(t→∞) dist(ty,f(X))/|t|<1/2,for all y∈S_Y;(ii)τ(f)≡sup_(y∈S_Y) lim inf_(t→∞) dist(ty,f(X))/|t|=0;(iii)there is a surjective linear isometry U:X→Y so that || f(x)-Ux||<= 2ε,for all x∈X.This gives an affirmative answer to a question proposed by Vestfrid(2004,2015).

Taking into consideration short-atomic-range interactions and anharmonic effects, we calculate the thermal ex- pansion coefficients, Gruneisen parameters, the elastic modulus of graphene varying with temperature and the phonon frequency. The anharmonic effects associated with the graphene deformation are also discussed. The results show that the value of thermal expansion coefficient is negative in the moderate temperature range, and it becomes positive when the temperature grows to be higher than a certain value. The change rate of elastic modulus with respect to temperature and pressure are calculated, and phonon frequencies are estimated. In the process of graphene thermal expansion, it is accompanied with the change of bond length and the rotation around the axis normal to the plane. Our results indicate that the effects due to the bond change are more significant than that of the rotation. We also show that if anharmonic effects are ignored, the thermal expansion coefficient and the Gruneisen parameters are zero, and the elastic modulus and the phonon frequency are constant. If anharmonic effects are considered up to the second term, these values will vary with temperature, and become closer to the experimental value. The higher the temperature is, the more significant the anharmonic effects become.
