Uranium sequestration in sediment at an iron-rich contaminated site at Oak Ridge, Tennessee via.bioreduction followed by reoxidation

This study evaluated uranium sequestration performance in iron-rich (30 g/kg) sediment via bioreduction followed by reoxidation.Field tests (1383 days) at Oak Ridge,Tennessee demonstrated that uranium contents in sediments increased after bioreduced sediments were re-exposed to nitrate and oxygen in contaminated groundwater.Bioreduction of contaminated sediments (1200 mg/kg U) with ethanol in microcosm reduced aqueous U from 0.37 to 0.023 mg/L.Aliquots of the bioreduced sediment were reoxidized with O2,H2O2,and NaNO3,respectively,over 285 days,resulting in aqueous U of 0.024,1.58 and 14.4 mg/L at pH 6.30,6.63 and 7.62,respectively.The source-and the three reoxidized sediments showed different desorption and adsorption behaviors of U,but all fit a Freundlich model.The adsorption capacities increased sharply at pH 4.5 to 5.5,plateaued at pH 5.5 to 7.0,then decreased sharply as pH increased from 7.0 to 8.0.The O2-reoxidized sediment retained a lower desorption efficiency at pH over 6.0.The NO3--reoxidized sediment exhibited higher adsorption capacity at pH 5.5 to 6.0.The pH-dependent adsorption onto Fe(Ⅲ) oxides and formation of U coated particles and precipitates resulted in U sequestration,and bioreduction followed by reoxidation can enhance the U sequestration in sediment.

Mechanistic insights into sequestration of U(VI) toward magnetic biochar: Batch, XPS and EXAFS techniques

The magnetic iron oxide（Fe3O4） nanoparticles stabilized on the biochar were synthesized by fast pyrolysis of Fe（II）-loaded hydrophyte biomass under N2 conditions. The batch experiments showed that magnetic biochar presented a large removal capacity（54.35 mg/g）at pH 3.0 and 293 K. The reductive co-precipitation of U（VI） to U（IV） by magnetic biochar was demonstrated according to X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and X-ray absorption near edge structure analysis. According to extended X-ray absorption fine structure analysis, the occurrence of U-Fe and U-U shells indicated that high effective removal of uranium was primarily inner-sphere coordination and then reductive co-precipitation at low pH. These observations provided the further understanding of uranium removal by magnetic materials in environmental remediation.

CO2 sequestration characteristics in the cementitious material based on gangue backfilling mining method

The increasing anthropogenic CO2 emission and global warming has challenged the China and other countries to seek new and better ways to meet the world’s increasing need for energy while reducing greenhouse gas emissions.The overall proposition of this research is to develop a brand-new CO2 physical and chemical sequestration method by using solid waste of coal mining and cementitious material which are widely used for goaf backfilling in coal mining.This research developed a new testing system(constant temperature pressurized reaction chamber(CTPRC))to study the effects of different initial parameters on mineral carbonation such as different initial water-binder ratio,initial sample porosity and initial carbon dioxide pressure.The experimental results show that the CO2 consumption ratio is 15%,10%and 7%higher with relatively high initial water-binder ratio,initial sample porosity and initial CO2 pressure within 48 h.In addition,some physical and chemical evidence was found through the electron microscope scanning and XRD test to further explain the above test results.This proposed research will provide critical parameters for optimizing CO2 sequestration capacity in this cementitious backfilling material with forming agent.

Interactions of dynamic supercritical CO_(2) fluid with different rank moisture-equilibrated coals: Implications for CO_(2) sequestration in coal seams

The interactions between CO_(2) and coals during CO_(2)-ECBM(CO_(2) sequestration in deep coal seams with enhanced coal-bed methane recovery)could change pore morphology and chemistry property of coals,thereby affecting adsorption,diffusion and flow capability of CO_(2) and CH_(4) within coal reservoirs.To simulate CO_(2)-ECBM process more practically,the dynamic interactions of supercritical CO_(2)(sc CO_(2))and moisture-equilibrated coals were performed at temperature of 318.15 K,pressure of 12.00 MPa,and duration of 12.00 h.The impacts of the interactions on physicochemical properties of coals were investigated.Results indicate that sc CO_(2)/H_(2)O exposure shows minor effect on micropores of coals.However,the exposure significantly decreases the mesopore surface area of bituminous coals,while increases that of anthracites.The mesopore volume and the average mesopore diameter of all the coals after sc CO_(2)/H_(2)O exposure decrease.The multi-fractal analysis verifies that the sc CO_(2) exposure can enhance the pore connectivity of various rank coals.Apart from the pore morphology,the exposure of sc CO_(2)/H_(2)O also affects the oxygenic functional groups on coal surface.Particularly,the exposure of sc CO_(2)/H_(2)O reduces the content of CAO and C@O of coals.The content of COOH of low rank coals including Hehua-M2#coal,Zhongqiang-4#coal,Buliangou-9#coal and Tashan-5#coal decreases,while the high rank Laochang^(-1)1#coal and Kaiyuan-9#coal witness a growth in COOH.The content of total oxygenic functional groups of all coals after interaction with sc CO_(2)/H_(2)O decreases;on the contrary,that of CAC/CAH of all coals after sc CO_(2)/H_(2)O exposure increases.In summary,the interaction with sc CO_(2)/H_(2)O significantly changes the pore system and oxygenic functional groups of various rank coals,which needs further attention regarding CO_(2)-ECBM.

Effects of mineral-organic fertilizer on the biomass of green Chinese cabbage and potential carbon sequestration ability in karst areas of Southwest China

The karst mountain areas of Southwest China contain barren farmland soils and suffer from nutritional and water deficiencies that affect crop productivity. Hence,it is imperative to apply suitable fertilizers to restore soil fertility and maintain crop yield. The aim of this study is to investigate the effects of mineral-organic fertilizer(MOF)made of potassic rock and organic waste on the growth of crops. For this purpose, green Chinese cabbage grown using three different fertilization methods including MOF,inorganic fertilizer(IF), and a control was evaluated. We determined soil water content, agronomic characteristics,and biomass of green Chinese cabbage in different treatments. Furthermore, surface runoff from the pot experiments and soil leachate from pot experiments were collected to determine water temperature, pH, and cation and anion concentrations. The results demonstrate thatMOF can improve the soil water-holding capacity of soil,and the basic agronomic characteristics of the cabbage treated with MOF were superior to those with IF. Using MOF can promote the increase in cabbage biomass.Additionally, the concentration of inorganic carbon(largely in the form of HCO_3^-) in surface runoff water treated by MOF was higher than the other treatments, establishing carbon sequestration potential. This work provides a novel and environmentally friendly fertilization pattern in karst areas, which will improve crop yield and also increase the carbon sequestration potential of crops.

Influences of Reservoir Heterogeneity and Anisotropy on CO_2 sequestration and Heat Extraction for CO_2-Based Enhanced Geothermal System

Enhanced geothermal systems(EGS) have a great potential to extract geothermal energy and have attracted much interest. In this paper, based on a 3D thermal-hydrologic model considering CO_2 sequestration, the influences of reservoir heterogeneity and anisotropy on CO_2 sequestration and heat extraction in CO_2-based EGS are investigated. Different heterogeneous reservoirs and homogeneous reservoir are compared, and different ratios among reservoir permeability components are compared. The results show that greater reservoir heterogeneity enhances CO_2 sequestration and restrains heat extraction. Higher ratio between horizontal(x and y directions) and vertical permeability components enhances CO_2 sequestration and heat extraction, and vertical permeability component has a little effect. With the increasing ratio between x-directional(perpendicular to the line of the injection well and the production well) and y-directional(perpendicular to x direction) reservoir permeability components(i.e. kx:ky), both CO_2 sequestration amount and steady-state heat extraction rate first increase and then decrease, and thermal breakthrough time increases, showing that there exists an optimum kx:ky, which is about 1:1. The results of this paper indicate that reservoir heterogeneity and anisotropy have important influences on CO_2 sequestration and heat extraction.

Adoption of technologies that enhance soil carbon sequestration in East Africa. What influence farmers' decision?

The last two decades have seen a rise of interest in the adoption and diffusion of agricultural technologies aimed at improving the sustainability of agricultural lands among smallholder farmers in developing countries.This papers set out to understand factors that influence the adoption of technologies that enhance soil carbon sequestration among smallholder farmers,using secondary data recorded in the World Overview of Conservation Approaches and Technologies(WOCAT)database from 45 to 50 smallholders'farmers in selected places in Kenya and Ethiopia respectively.A Probit model was used to analyse whether socio-economic,institutional,off-farm income,technical know-how,farmers'percep-tions,and land use characteristics influences the adoption of technologies that enhance soil carbon sequestration.The results show that smallholder farmers that positively perceived net benefits of the soil carbon enhancing technologies were more likely to adopt such technologies that enhance soil carbon sequestration in both countries.Access to off-farm income and land ownership with title deeds were also found to be positively associated with adoption.Off-farm income positively influences adoption among farmer with a moderate income(100-500US$per year)but not the rich(>500US$)farmers.Moderate to high level of skills and technical know-how required for implementing and maintaining a technology on the farm had a negative influence on adoption.This shows that interventions,aimed at addressing specific factors such as inadequate skills and knowledge,change in perception among farmers,and off-farm income are likely to have the greatest impact in decisions relating to the adoption of the soil carbon enhancing practices among farmers in East Africa.

Pulmonary sequestration infected with nontuberculous mycobacteria:a report of two cases and literature review

We report two cases of pulmonary sequestration infected with nontuberculous mycobacteria(NTM): Mycobacterium avium and Mycobacterium abscessus.Chest computed tomography showed pneumonic consolidation in the right lower lobe,which received a systemic blood supply from the descending aorta in both patients.Video-assisted thoracoscopic surgeries were successfully performed and pathologica]examinations revealed multiple caseating granulomas.A review of the literature revealed only seven previous case reports of pulmonary sequestration infected with NTM,and no case with Mycobacterium abscessus has been reported.

Comparison and analysis of three estimation methods for soil carbon sequestration potential in the Ebinur Lake Wetland,China

Based on soil under seven vegetation types,the carbon sequestration potential in the Ebinur Lake wetland was estimated using the maximum value method,the saturation value method,and the classification and grading method.Results indicated that:1)Soil carbon sequestration results for the top 20 cm soil layer were about 1.88 Mt using the maximum value method;the middle level standard of the classification and grading method result was 1.71 Mt.2)Soil carbon sequestration potential in the top 20 cm layer under different vegetation types,evaluated using the saturation value method and the classificationgrading method,ranged from 0.45 to 0.67 Mt,accounting for about 5/16 of the ideal carbon sequestration potential.3)Carbon sequestration potential calculated using the saturation method and the classification method(middle level standard),combining the soil organic carbon increment under different vegetation types in Ebinur Lake wetland,recorded an average growth rate of soil organic carbon around 0.7-1 kg/(hm^2·a).Time required to reach its carbon sequestration potential was 41 to 144 a.These results indicate that soil organic carbon content dynamically changes,and different forms of land use affect soil organic carbon content.The potential and ability of soil carbon sequestration and its mechanism of dynamic change are investigated,providing a scientific basis for understanding regional carbon cycle and climate change in wetlands.

Energy Aspects of CO_2 Sorption in the Context of sequestration in Coal Deposits

This paper summarises the results of experimental testing of carbon dioxide sorption on five coal samples. Sorption tests were done at the temperature 288, 298, 313 and 323 K, in the pressure range 0-5 MPa. The analysis of sorption isotherms and the effects of temperature on sorption capacity reveal that in the case of samples NR1, Pn, Tu, Be the temperature increase from 298 to 323 K led to 1.3-fold decrease of the sorption value. In the ease of coal Th the decrease of sorption capacity was 3-fold. It appears that the analysis of maceral content plays a major role. In the case of coals, porosity is associated with the petrographic composition. The values of the isosteric heat of sorption and the work of expansion and desorption were derived for the investigated sorption systems. Test data reveal that for hard coals the isosteric heat is inversely proportional to the ＂reserve＂ of volumetric work-a major parameter triggering the sudden release of gas from the coalbed, thus enabling us to assess the potential risk involved in rapid unsealing of the coalbed.
