Superior and safer lithium sulfur batteries realized by robust polysulfides-retarding dam with high flame retardance

The unparalleled energy density has granted lithium-sulfur batteries(LSBs)with attractive usages.Unfortunately,LSBs still face some unsurpassed challenges in industrialization,with polysulfides shuttling,dendrite growth and thermal hazard as the major problems triggering the cycling instability and low safety.With the merit of convenience,the method of designing functional separator has been adapted.Concretely,the carbon aerogel confined with CoS_(2)(CoS_(2)-NCA)is constructed and coated on Celgard separator surface,acquiring CoS_(2)-NCA modified separator(CoS_(2)-NCA@C),which holds the promoted electrolyte affinity and flame retardance.As revealed,CoS_(2)-NCA@C cell gives a high discharge capacity 1536.9 mAh/g at 1st cycle,much higher than that of Celgard cell(987.1 mAh/g).Moreover,the thermal runaway triggering time is dramatically prolonged by 777.4 min,corroborating the promoted thermal safety of cell.Noticeably,the higher coulombic efficiency stability and lower overpotential jointly confirm the efficacy of CoS_(2)-NCA@C in suppressing the lithium dendrite growth.Overall,this work can provide useful inspirations for designing functional separator,coping with the vexing issues of LSBs.

In view of novel materials in the field of lithium metal batteries(LMBs), metal-organic frameworks(MOFs) have attracted extensive research interest owing to their controllable pore size, unsaturated metal sites and multifunctional organic groups. A variety of MOFs have been elaborately calculated and synthesized to be applied as separator coating, electrolyte modulators and solid-state electrolyte fillers in LMBs. In this mini-review, we summarize the mechanism of MOFs to limit the migration of anions, improve the Li-ion transference number and prolong the lifespan of LMBs. Suitable pore structure of MOFs can physically restrict the movement of Li^(+). Unsaturated metal sites can adsorb anions by electrostatic interaction. In addition,multifunctional organic functional groups that limit the migration of anions are discussed. Finally, the key challenges and perspectives in the development direction of MOFs-based separators and electrolytes are further elaborated.

Lithium-sulfur battery(LSB) has high energy density but is limited by the polysulfides shuttle and dendrite growth during cycling. Herein, a free-standing cellulose nanofiber(CNF) separator is designed and fabricated in isopropanol/water suspension through vacuum filtration progress. CNFs with abundant polar oxygen-containing functional groups can chemically immobilize the polysulfides, and suppress the formation of the dendrites by controlling the surface morphology of the SEI on lithium metal in LSB. The isopropanol content in a suspension can fine-tune the pore structure of the membrane to achieve optimal electrochemical performance. The prepared separator displays integrated advantages of an ultrathin thickness(19 μm), lightweight(0.87 mg cm^(-2)), extremely high porosity(98.05%), and decent electrolyte affinity. As a result, the discharge capacity of the LSB with CNF separator at the first and 100 th cycle is 1.4 and 1.3 times that of PP separator, respectively. Our research provides an environmentalfriendly and facile strategy for the preparation of multifunctional separators for LSBs.

As a major equipment for thermal power plants,the main function of coarse powder separators is to separate particles into size groups according to particle diameter.With the rising coal prices,power plants are using more low-density lignite.Consequently,the original equipment does not operate under normal conditions.Therefore,to return the equipment to normal operating conditions,the isokinetic sampling method,computational fluid dynamics(CFD),and discrete phase model(DPM)based on the Euler-Lagrange method are applied in this research to analyze the effect of baffle shapes,baffle numbers,and centrifugal blades on the equipment performance index,like R90.The shape of the baffle plate was optimized and improved.Preferential method was applied to determine the optimal number of baffles to ensure normal working conditions.Results show that curved baffles can suppress the axial negative gradient field below themselves better than rectangular baffles.The curved baffles selected by the optimal seeking method make full use of the negative axial gradient field and provide the particles entering the separation zone at tangential velocity in advance with the addition of centrifugal blades.Thus,pre-separation can be realized.The R90 is 5 at the separator outlet and 95 at the powder return port,indicating that the output capacity of the separator returned to a reasonable operating performance.

With the wide applications of lithium-ion batteries(LIBs)in electronic devices and electric vehicles,it is of great importance to improve their safety and electrochemical performance.Herein,soluble polyimides(PI)containing carboxyl groups(―COOH)were synthesized by a simple one-step method and PI separators with sponge-like,interpenetrating porous structures were prepared via non-solvent induced phase separation(NIPS).The obtained PI separators exhibited excellent thermal stability and fire-resistance properties,with the electrolyte uptake of 344%and good dimensional integrity in air at 200℃.The results showed that the lithium-ion transference number of the obtained PI separator could reach 0.48,which was much higher than that of the Celgard-2400 separator(0.38).The Li/LiFePO_(4) half-cell with the PI separator showed excellent cycle capability and high-rate performance with a high capacity of 121.80 mA·h·g^(-1) at 5 C,which was better than that of the cell with the Celgard-2400 separator(54.3 mA·h·g^(-1)),demonstrating the promising applications of this PI separators in LIBs.

The separator with excellent mechanical and thermal properties are highly required for lithium ion batteries(LIBs).Therefore,it is crucial to develop novel nanofbrous membranes with enhanced mechanical strength and thermal stability.In this work,the fuorinated polyimide(FPI)was synthesized and blended with polyvinylidene fuoride(PVDF)to fabricate composite nanofbrous membranes(CNMs)via electrospinning method.Benefting from the introduction of aromatic FPI,the prepared PVDF/FPI nanofbrous membranes were endowed with enhanced mechanical strength and thermal stability.When the FPI content increased from 0 to 30 wt%,the tensile strength of composite nanofbrous membranes enhanced from 1.57 to 2.30 MPa.Moreover,there are almost no dimensional shrinkage for the CNM-30 containing 30 wt%FPI after heat treatment at 160℃ for 1 h.Furthermore,the prepared CNMs show improved electrochemical performances in comparison with neat PVDF and commercial Celgard membranes.The electrolyte uptake and ionic conductivity of the CNMs could reach to 522.4% and 1.14 ms·cm^(−1),respectively.The prepared CNMs could provide an innovative and promising approach for the development and design of high-performance separators.

The separator is a key component of sodium-ion battery,which greatly affects the electrochemical performances and safety characteristics of the battery.Conventional glass fiber separator cannot meet the requirements of large-scale application because of high cost and poor mechanical properties.Herein,the novel composite separators are prepared by a simple slurry sieving process using glass fiber separator scraps and ordinary qualitative filter paper as raw materials.As the composite mass ratio is 1:1,the composite separator has excellent comprehensive properties,including tensile strength of 15.8 MPa,porosity of 74.3%,ionic conductivity of 1.57×10^(-3)S·cm^(-1)and thermal stability at 210℃.The assembled sodium-ion battery shows superior cycling performance(capacity retention of 94.1%after 500 cycles at 1C)and rate capacity(retention rate of 87.3%at 10C),and it maintains fine interface stability.The above results provide some new ideas for the separator design of high-performance and low-cost sodium-ion batteries.

In the titanium dioxide industry,there is a lack of a low-cost and high-efficiency treatment method for chloride containing tail gas.In this paper,the removal of HCl from the titanium dioxide industry by gas cyclone-liquid jet separator was studied,while Ca(OH)_(2),Na_(2)CO_(3),NaOH solution,and water were used as absorbents.This paper investigated the influence of gas cyclone-liquid jet separator’s various process parameters on the removal rate of hydrogen chloride gas.The mechanism of mass transfer in the process of removing hydrogen chloride was discussed,and the effect and feasibility of HCl gas removal in the gas cyclone-liquid jet absorption separator were studied.The results showd that the removal efficiency of hydrogen chloride maintained above 95%,up to 99.9%,and the total mass transfer coefficient reached0.28 mol·m^(-3)·s^(-1)·k Pa^(-1).Under the same conditions,the absorption effect and total mass transfer coefficient of weak basic absorption liquid can be greatly improved by increasing the flow rate of absorption liquid,but the absorption effect and total mass transfer coefficient of strong alkaline absorption liquid can’t be improved obviously.The larger the inlet gas volume,the higher the gas concentration,the lower the absorption efficiency and the lower the total volumetric mass transfer coefficient.

separator is a pivotal component of lithium-ion batteries(LIBs)and determines the electrochemical performance and safety.However,with the increase in energy density and application scenarios,commercial polyolefin separators are increasingly unable to undertake heavy responsibility of battery safety protection.Herein,a new kind of nanofiber separator based on poly(ether ether ketone)(PEEK)with excellent thermal stability,self-extinguishing,and superior electrochemical properties is reported.Effective inheritance of intrinsic properties from raw PEEK materials and optimized hot-pressing operation endows the separator with high robustness and wettability,showing tensile strength of 15.8 MPa and a contact angle of 17.2°.The high thermal stability of PEEK can ensure the separator to preserve the structural integrity and microstructure at temperatures beyond 300℃,and the excellent self-extinguishing peculiarity of PEEK capacitates the high safety of LIB.Notably,benefitting from high porosity and polar surface,the PEEK separator shows high electrolyte uptake of 245.5%and exhibits a wider electrochemical window and faster lithium-ion transport number than commercial polyolefin separators.Furthermore,cells assembled with PEEK separator display better performance than the ones with PE separator,and the PEEK LIB has been successfully used to light up a lamp at a high temperature of 150℃.
