Assessment of sensory impairment in older adults with dementia

Background:Over 55 million people worldwide are living with *** rate of cognitive decline increases with age,and loss of senses may be a contributing ***:This study aimed to analyze hearing,olfactory function,and color vision in patients with *** and methods:The sample comprised 40 patients with dementia and 37 cognitively normal controls aged 41–85 *** participants underwent conventional pure-tone audiometry and a screening version of the Hearing Handicap Inventory for Adults,the Odorized Markers Test of olfactory function and the Ishihara color vision *** effects of comorbidities and lifestyle factors were also ***:Patients with dementia had significantly worse hearing at almost all frequencies tested and significantly greater olfactory impairment than cognitively normal *** vision impairment was found in less than 8%of the sample,with no significant difference between the *** of two senses(hearing and olfaction)was significantly more common in patients with dementia than in ***:Individuals with dementia were found to have sensory decline,namely hearing and olfactory *** vision was rarely impaired in the *** with dementia tended to have more multisensory impairments than controls.

A Model and Treatment for Autism at the Convergence of Chinese Medicine and Western Science:First 130 Cases

Objective：To present a model for autism showing that impairment of sensory and self-regulation is the core deficit that underlies delays in social/language skills and abnormal behavior in autism;and to demonstrate the efficacy of a treatment for autism based on Chinese ***：Children with autism under 6 years of age were assigned to treatment or wait-list conditions.A total of 130 children were treated and the results compared with 45 wait-list *** is a tuina methodology directed at sensory impairment——Kai Qiao *** treatment was a five-month protocol that was implemented daily by trained parents via trained support *** effects of treatment on the main symptoms,autistic behavior,social/ language delay,sensory and self-regulatory impairment,as well as on parenting stress,were observed and ***：The treatment had a large effect size（P0.0001） on measures of sensory and self-regulation. The evaluations done by pre-school teachers demonstrated improvement in the measures of autism（P0.003）, and were confirmed by evaluations done by parents（P0.0001）.There was a large decrease（P0.0001） in parenting ***：sensory and self-regulatory impairment is a main factor in the development and severity of *** of young children with autism with Kai Qiao Tuina resulted in a decrease in sensory and self-regulatory impairment and a reduction in severity of measures of autism.
