Misallocation in Chinese Manufacturing and Services: A Variable Markup Approach

Cross-country comparison reveals an unusually small service sector in China. Using firm-level data from Chinas 2008 economic census, we find two facts that speak to a novel mechanism of misallocation within service and between manufacturing and service sectors. First, compared with the manufacturing sector, there are more stateowned enterprises and fewer entrants in the service sector. Second, markups increase with firm size, and the increase is more dramatic among service firms. We interpret these facts through the lens of a monopolistic competition model with heterogeneous firms and variable markups. A multisector model shows a new channel that translates asymmetric barriers to entry across sectors into sectoral markup differences, which in turn cause sectoral misallocation. Quantitative analysis shows that when reducing entry barriers to service firms to the extent observed for manufacturing firms, the model predicts a 12-percentage-point increase in the service employment share.

China catches up with the U.S. as the world's largest manufacturer

This paper compares the internal structures of the manufacturing industries in China and the U.S. from 1998 to 2005 and leads to three major discoveries: First, the gaps between China and the U.S.'s manufacturing capacity have been narrowing at a high speed in the last seven years, during which the share of added value of China's manufacturing industry to that of the U.S. increased from 13% to 52%, and then reached 76% in 2007. Second, the labor force employed in China's manufacturing industry increased by 50%, of which the increase in capital and technology-intensive production sectors exceeded that in labor-intensive sectors. Meanwhile, the labor force employed in the U.S. manufacturing industry decreased. Third, labor productivity in China's manufacturing industry increased by 2.78 times, and profits increased by 2.21 times, much higher than the U.S. growth rates of 18.2% and 49.5%. Obviously, the narrowing gaps between China and the U.S.'s production capacities mean China's industrial progress and the hierarchy of world industrial powers will be rearranged.

Anatomic variations of the right biliary system are one of the most common risk factors for sectoral bile duct injury(BDI)during *** right posterior BDI may in particular be a challenge for both diagnosis and *** we describe two cases of isolated right posterior sectoral BDI that took place during laparoscopic *** effective external biliary drainage from the liver hilum in both cases,there was a persistent biliary leak observed which was not visible on endoscopic *** evaluation of images from both endoscopic and magnetic resonance cholangiograms revealed the diagnosis of an isolated right posterior sectoral *** were treated with a delayed bisegmental(segments 6 and 7)liver resection and a Roux-en-Y hepaticojejunostomy respectively with good outcomes at 24 and 4 mo of *** paper discusses strategies for prevention of such injuries along with the diagnostic and therapeutic challenges it offers.
