A Hybrid Multi-Objective Evolutionary Algorithm for Optimal Groundwater Management under Variable Density Conditions

In this paper, a new hybrid multi-objective evolutionary algorithm （MOEA）, the niched Pareto tabu search combined with a genetic algorithm （NPTSGA）, is proposed for the management of groundwater resources under variable density conditions. Relatively few MOEAs can possess global search ability contenting with intensified search in a local area. Moreover, the overall searching ability of tabu search （TS） based MOEAs is very sensitive to the neighborhood step size. The NPTSGA is developed on the thought of integrating the genetic algorithm （GA） with a TS based MOEA, the niched Pareto tabu search （NPTS）, which helps to alleviate both of the above difficulties. Here, the global search ability of the NPTS is improved by the diversification of candidate solutions arising from the evolving genetic algorithm population. Furthermore, the proposed methodology coupled with a density-dependent groundwater flow and solute transport simulator, SEAWAT, is developed and its performance is evaluated through a synthetic seawater intrusion management problem. Optimization results indicate that the NPTSGA offers a tradeoff between the two conflicting objectives. A key conclusion of this study is that the NPTSGA keeps the balance between the intensification of nondomination and the diversification of near Pareto-optimal solutions along the tradeoff curves and is a stable and robust method for implementing the multi-objective design of variable-density groundwater resources.

PARAMETERS IDENTIFICATION IN A SALTWATER intrusion PROBLEM

This article is devoted to the identification, from observations or field measurements, of the hydraulic conductivity K for the saltwater intrusion problem in confined aquifers. The involved PDE model is a coupled system of nonlinear parabolic-elliptic equations completed by boundary and initial conditions. The main unknowns are the saltwater/freshwater interface depth and the freshwater hydraulic head. The inverse problem is formulated as an optimization problem where the cost function is a least square functional measuring the discrepancy between experimental data and those provided by the *** the exact problem as a constraint for the optimization problem and introducing the Lagrangian associated with the cost function, we prove that the optimality system has at least one solution. Moreover, the first order necessary optimality conditions are established for this optimization problem.

Seasonal metal fluxes derived by the interaction of surface water and groundwater in an aquaculture estuary

Submarine groundwater discharge(SGD)plays a major role as a conveyor of metals to coastal ***,the seasonal change of metal fluxes derived through SGD is ***,we evaluated the behaviours and fluxes of trace metals(Mn,Fe,Ba,Pb,U,Cr,Zn,Cu)in an estuary under different seasonal *** behaviours of trace metals revealed that SGD was the source of Mn(3.51 mmol/(m^(2)·d)),Fe(0.174 mmol/(m^(2)·d))and Ba(0.024 mmol/(m^(2)·d)),but the Cu sink(−0.55μmol/(m^(2)·d))and other metals exhibited a seasonal source‒sink *** seasonal variation of dissolved organic matter and the fresh groundwater proportion in subterranean estuaries may have an important effect on metals fluxes especially for the Fe,Mn and *** result shows that the single seasonal metal fluxes estimation applied to the annual scale will cause a large deviation,up to 3.6 times for Fe,5.5 times for Mn,and 15 times for ***,the influence of seasonal fluctuations on SGDderived metal fluxes cannot be ignored,and our findings will be important for comprehending the metal budget and cycle in nearshore environment.

Submarine groundwater discharge around Taiwan

A preliminary study shows that the submarine groundwater discharge（SGD） exists around Taiwan even though groundwater overdrawing on the island is serious. Fifteen of the 20 sites studied for major anions and cations recorded a clear SGD signal with freshwater outflow. A total of 278 salinity and major ion measurements were made. Sixteen nearly freshwater SGD（salinity≤1.0） samples were obtained, providing strong and direct evidence for the existence of fresh meteoric groundwater entering the ocean from Taiwan. The total SGD flux is estimated to be 1.07×1010 t/a which is about 14% of the annual river output. The freshwater component of the SGD is3.85×109 t which is about 5.2% of the annual river discharge in Taiwan. The collected SGD has a composition similar to seawater with an addition of Ca, CO3 and HCO3 due to dissolution of calcareous rocks. Some samples with high Cl/（Na＋K） may indicate pollution.

Ground water hydrochemical characteristics: seawater intruded area in eastern and southern coast of Laizhou Bay

Eastern and southern coastal zones of Laizhou Bay are the most representative seawater intruded areas in the world, with two intrusion sources of contemporary seawater and paleobrine. In order to reveal the complicated hydrochemical changing process and the mechanism of fresh groundwater being polluted by saltwater, we conducted long-term observation and hydrochemical analysis at four observing sections of typical salt-fresh water transitional zone. The study indicates that seawater and brine intrusion processes have different hydrochemical features, and that ion exchange and adsorption actions between water and aquifer produce great influence on the intrusion.

Modeling of the Saltwater intrusion Using the Level Set Method. Application to Henry’s Problem

The salt intrusion phenomenon is caused by overexploitation of aquifers in coastal areas. This physical phenomenon has been the subject of numerous studies and numerous methods have been proposed, with the aim of protecting the quality of the water in these aquifers. This work proposes a two-dimensional saline intrusion model using the sharp interface approach and the level set method. It consists of a parabolic equation modeling the underground flow and a hyperbolic Equation (the level set equation) which makes it possible to track the evolution of the interface. High-order numerical schemes such as the space scheme WENO5 and the third-order time scheme TVD-RK were used for the numerical resolution of the hyperbolic equation. Evaluation of Sea-Water intrusion in Coastal Aquifers Using both Numerical Methods and Causal Research: A Case Study of Mombasa, Kenya

This research carried out in Mombasa Island links research done in 2020 on the effects of sea-water intrusion and the current state. The aquifer in Mombasa Island is semi-confined and consists of limestone and coral rock. Water samples were collected and tested from 32 boreholes to determine chemical qualities. Results showed that chloride levels ranged from 74 mg/l to 412 mg/l, with 34% of boreholes having high chloride concentration. After modelling using MT3D program results indicated that the boreholes near the ocean were interfered by sea-water intrusion because chloride concentration was high. Control measures to prevent further sea-water intrusion should be put in place. Therefore, from a practical point of view, individuals who have sunk boreholes since 2020 try to mitigate the problem by installing Reverse Osmosis systems within their facilities, to reduce chloride levels from borehole water. The current research analyses the impact of intrusion on the installed RO systems on Mombasa Island, including cost implications, with the view of proposing viable mitigation measures. The reverse osmosis system though expensive would save a lot of chloride entering the bore holes. It is a little bit expensive though but the end results are positive and the chloride levels will reduce the cost of using too much soap.

Methodological study of coastal geological hazard assessment based on GIS

The current researches on risk assessment of geological disasters mainly focus on unexpected disasters such as collapses, landslides and mud-rock flows etc. As the convergence zone of land and sea, coastal zone is the most active and complex area of interactions of lithosphere, hydrosphere, atmosphere, biosphere and anthroposphere. The ecological environment of coastal zone is very fragile, so further systematical research on coastal geological hazard assessment and prevention is in urgent need. The author begins with the definition and research contents and selects three typical coastal geological disasters, namely, the seawater intrusion, coastline change and sea-level rise as the objects of study. The systematic analysis and study on assessment system and methods are conducted, hazard assessment factors are selected, and a completely set of coastal disaster assessment system is established based on the technique of GIS. We took Bao’an District of Shenzhen City as an example and carried out a case study.
