Ecological and palaeoecological studies were carried out in a series of lakes in the Vestfold Hills (68°38′S, 78°06′E) on eastern Antarctic continent. Dynamics types of the lakes in environmental geomorphology and physic chemistry, as well as features of biological community structures in different lakes were analyzed. Marine macro and micro fossils collected from the terraces and beaches surrounding these lakes and determined in 14 C radiocarbon ages to be the Late Pleistocene, were used as evidences to show the evolutionary processes of the lakes after sea level changes and transgressions since 18000 a B.P.. Basic modals of evolution for the lakes given in the paper could be regarded as not only explaining the history of environmental and ecological changes in VH lakes, and also reflecting of local environmental evolution in Antarctic region and global climate changes from past to present time.

Status and trends in the stability of the three largest ice shelves in Antarctica

This paper established high resolution model about ocean dynamic in XiangShan harbor and its adjacent sea based on FVCOM, reappeared the seasonal variation characteristics of its ocean dynamic. We also studied the formation mechanism of the tide phase lag between the tidal currents in Fo Du channel and Niu Bi mountain channel and researched the impacts of sea level change and sea reclamation accumulate effect on ocean dynamic in Xiang Shan harbor. It can be found, in the sea between Gang Pan mountain and the entrance of Xiang Shan harbor, there are almost clockwise reversing current on surface and counterclockwise reversing current on bottom in summer, but in winter, the reversing current are all clockwise and its reversing character is more obvious. In the sea out the entrance of Xiang Shan harbor, they are all clockwise rotary currents on surface and bottom;the currents are almost reversing with cross distribution of counterclockwise and clockwise directions in the sea between Gang Pan mountain and Tie harbor, these are both the same on surface and bottom. The seasonal variation characteristics are not obvious in these two sea areas. The dynamic process of Luo Tou channel and Fo Du channel is the reason that make the tide phase lag between the tidal currents in Fo Du channel and Niu Bi mountain channel. If the water exchanges between the two channels is cut off, the tide phase lag between the tidal currents in Fo Du channel and Niu Bi mountain channel will disappear. Impacted by yearly sea reclamations between 2003 to 2012, in Xiang Shan harbor, the mean spring tide range is increased by 11.44 cm, the mean high tide is increased by 5.9cm, the mean tidal prism is reduced by 3.72%, the water exchange rate in 30 days is reduced by 2.5%. The sea level rise makes the amplitudes of all tidal constituents bigger, and also intensifies the impacts of sea reclamations accumulate effect on ocean dynamic in Xiang Shan harbor.

The Ross,Filchner-Ronne,and Amery ice shelves are the three largest ice shelves in Antarctica,playing a crucial role in supporting the Antarctic ice ***,current studies on the stability of the three largest ice shelves primarily focus on singular or limited factors,lacking a comprehensive assessment of multiple *** systematically and in-depth study the stability and trend of the three largest ice shelves,we comprehensively collected and analyzed key parameters,including elevation changes,basal melting,surface meltwater,major rifts propagation rate,suture zones,ice front area change rate,grounding lines,ice velocity,and mass ***,we selected the collapsed Larsen B Ice Shelf(LBIS),the rapidly changing and structurally weakened Pine Island Ice Shelf(PIIS),and the accelerating Totten Ice Shelf(TIS)as reference ice *** comparing and analyzing the key parameters between these reference ice shelves and the three largest ice shelves,we find the status and trends in the stability of the *** findings reveal that most key parameters of the three largest ice shelves present relatively minor variations compared to those of the reference ice ***,50%of the parameters are smaller than those of the accelerating TIS,88%are smaller than those of the rapidly changing PIIS,and all parameters are smaller than those of the collapsed ***,after analyzing parameters that are not smaller than those of the TIS,it is observed that they remain in a stable ***,the three largest ice shelves are currently undergoing natural changes that do not threaten their stability in the short ***,the evolution of the ice shelves under global climate change remains uncertain,making long-term observation and monitoring essential to assess their impact on sea level rise.

The East China coastal plain is one of the most important Neolithic culture areas in China, where rich archaeological sites including those producing the earliest domesticated rice are observed. It is also a place where landscape has experienced dramatic evolution during the Holocene when both sea level and climate changed, such that it is an ideal place for studying human-environment interaction. This study investigated over 2000 sites of pre-history and Shang and Zhou Dynasties, with 655 of which being Neolithic ages, by using DEM and GIS methods. The results suggest that the spatial and temporal distribution of Neolithic sites has largely been controlled by landscape evolution(particularly changes in coastal line), which ultimately governed by sea level changes. During early Holocene, Neolithic sites sparsely distributed in the intermountain basins of east Zhejiang Province, far from the influence of ocean. Over the period of 9–7 ka, the coastal plain(including the shelf) was largely submerged,only the feet of low hills to the south and southwest of the study area, and islands protruding the estuary, cradled limited number of settlements with characteristic "maritime components". At about 7 ka, sea level rise decelerated prominently, while sediments supply in the drainage remained high value, the combination of which led to land formation and propagation. Vast space during this period facilitated the growth of settlements in both size and number. In the mean time, however, the coastal plain was vulnerable to extreme environmental events such as storms and flooding owning to its geomorphic nature, which exerted great influence on the rise and fall of Neolithic culture.

To better monitor the vertical crustal movements and sea level changes around Greenland,multiple data sources were used in this paper,including global positioning system(GPS),tide gauge,satellite gravimetry,satellite altimetry,glacial isostatic adjustment(GIA).First,the observations of more than 50 GPS stations from the international GNSS service(IGS)and Greenland network(GNET)in 2007–2018 were processed and the common mode error(CME)was eliminated with using the principal component analysis(PCA).The results show that all GPS stations show an uplift trend and the stations in southern Greenland have a higher vertical ***,by deducting the influence of GIA,the impact of current Gr IS mass changes on GPS stations was analysed,and the GIA-corrected vertical velocity of the GPS is in good agreement with the vertical velocity obtained by gravity recovery and climate experiment(GRACE).Third,the absolute sea level change around Greenland at 4 gauge stations was obtained by combining relative sea level derived from tide gauge observations and crustal uplift rates derived from GPS observations,and was validated by sea level products of satellite *** results show that although the mass loss of Gr IS can cause considerable global sea level rise,eustatic movements along the coasts of Greenland are quite complex under different mechanisms of sea level changes.

Four units and twenty-four zones of diatom have been discerned in the Borehole ZK5 in the estuarine plain of the Jiulong River, Fujian Province. Comprehensive analysis of these, together with microbiological assemblages and age determinations in some other boreholes, shows that during the Late Wurm Glacial, sea level of the study area rose and fell frequently, but had principally been in the environments of estuary-bay. This mainly resulted from the tectonic subouction. In this period 3 low sea levels occurred. at 18, 16 and 12 kaBP respectively. During Holocene, sea weter intruded massively and the sea level over the transgnaion maximum had been 5-10 m higher than that of the present.

Relative sea level change can be derived from tide records. In order to study the general sea level change along the coast of China, it is necessary to make a unified reduction for all the results obtained from various tide stations. A so-called isostatic datum of vertical movement of thecoastal land hasbeen suggested as a basis of the unified reduction in this paper, established by useof precise releveling data completed between 50’s and 80’*** vertical movement velocities relative to the datum at the bench marks of 15 tide stations have been calculated. These velocities provide a base for the reduction.

Through a sequence stratigraphic research on the Permo-Carboniferous in North China, it is suggested that the boundary of the Carboniferous and the Permian may be better moved down to the bottom of the main workable coalbed which is overlain by the limestones containing Pseudoschwagerina zone. This study mainly deals with the Upper Carboniferous, the Lower Permian and the lower part of the Middle Permian coal bearing strata, which are 150-180 m thick totally and can be divided into 2 mesosequences, including 6 sequence sets and 19 sequences. The lithostratigraphic units are diachronous in North China. The upper two limestones of the Taiyuan Formation in the central part of the study area may be correlated with the bottom two limestones of the lower Taiyuan Formation in the southern part. The Shanxi Formation in the central and northern parts may be correlated with most of the Taiyuan Formation in the southern part. The Xiashihezi Formation in the northern part may be correlated with the upper part of Shanxi Formation in the central and southern parts. The Shangshihezi Formation in the northern part may be correlated with the Xiashihezi Formation in the southern part. The paleogeographical maps are compiled in a chrono stratigraphic framework. From the Late Carboniferous to the Early Permian, 3 cycles of sea level change and transgression regression occurred, and the major transgression took place in the Asselian. In the Late Carboniferous, the direction of transgression was from the east to the west, and in the Early Permian it was from the southeast and the southwest to the north. Three workable coalbed groups were formed in Asselian, early Sakmarian and late Sakmarian respectively. The TST coals developed under the bottom of the Asselian limestones are the best coals for coalbed meathane extracting. The Sakmarian coal beds were formed in HST. The East China sea shelf basin is a key area for setting up the sea level changes of Cenozoic in the West Pacific. Based upon the characteristics of seismic reflection, the analysis of sequence stratigraphy and depositional system, the high resolution chronostratigraphic framework has been set up by using the data of micropaleontologic biozone fossils. The relative sea level change curve has been set up by combining analysis of paleoecology, genetic facies, specific sedimentary structures and on lap recognized from the seismic profiles with study of geochemical characteristics. There are 4 2nd order basin cycles showing the long term sea level changes, and 22 3rd order cycles showing short term ones with relative changing ranges of 0-150 m. Transgression and regression showing long term sea level changes bear asymmetric feature, which indicates that the speed of transgression is faster than that of regression. There are a lot of differences when compared with Haq ’s curve. The sequence stratigraphic framework has also been set up and 3 tectonic sequences, 7 supersequences and 19 sequences have been subdivided for Tertiary in the East China sea shelf basin. On the basis of detailed analysis of genetic facies and log facies, 9 sedimentary systems, 20 depositional assemblages and many genetic facies have also been recognized and investigated. Based on the studies mentioned above, the favorable source and reservoir facies of gas and petroleum are indicated.
