China’s manganese resources are usually associated with the valuable elements such as silver, lead, zinc, cobalt, nickel, scandium, etc which should be comprehensively recovered during the manganese beneficiation. A manganese ore from western China contains Mn 23.18%, Co 0.073%, Ni 0.21% and Sc 0.013%. The mineralogy composition of ore and the occurrence of associated elements of Sc, Co as well as Ni are studied in this paper. According to the results, the manganese minerals in this ore are mainly lithiophorite and a little secondary pyrolusite. The lithiophorite in this ore is rich in aluminum and actually it is the generic name for the multi-mineral aggregates mixed by silicon, aluminum and iron, which is quite different with the ordinary psilomelane. There is not any Sc, Ni or Co mineral in this ore and more than 98% of Sc, Ni and Ni exists in lithiophorite and pyrolusite. The distribution of Sc, Co and Ni in lithiophorite is further studied by EPMA and the results indicate that Sc and Co in lithiophorite is sparse and dispersed distribution while Ni usually distributes in the argillaceous lithiophorite and is local enrichment. Reduction-sulfuric acid leaching tests show that the dissolution of Sc and Co happens before lithiophorite dissolves; the dissolution rate of Sc and Co is almost the same, which is significantly higher than the dissolution rate of manganese. However, the dissolution rate of Ni is extremely low with the dissolution of manganse, which indicates that Ni is hard to dissolve and its dissolution rate obviously lags behind that of Mn, Sc and Co. The conclusion can be drawn that Sc and Co exist in the lithiophorite crystals as interface adsorption while Ni exists in the clay (kaolinite) mixed up with lithiophorite as interface adsorption. Extraction and Separation of Rare Earth Elements Using Novel Amic Acid Type Adsorbent

The synergistic extraction of scandium(III) with a mixture of Cyanex272 and Cyanex923 in sulfuric acid medium has been investigated in this study. At low H2 SO4 concentration, Cyanex272+Cyanex923 exhibited an obvious synergistic extraction for Sc(III). When the concentration of H2 SO4 was 0.10 mol/L and the molar fraction of Cyanex272 was 0.6, the maximal synergistic enhancement coefficient was obtained to be 5.20. What’s more, the synergistic extraction mechanism was proposed and the extracted complex was determined. In the meanwhile, the synergistic extraction system indicated of a potential practical application value for the recovery of Sc(III) from the sulfuric acid liquor of nickel laterite ores. High-efficiency and good-selectivity extraction systems are very attractive in the solvent extraction process. A synergistic extraction of scandium(III) in a spent sulfuric acid solution of titanium oxide production that uses a mixture of bis-2-ethylhexyl phosphoric acid(D2 EHPA, P204) and primary amine(N1923) has been proposed in this study. The effect of the molar fraction of N1923 in the mixed extractant on the extraction of scandium and synergistic enhancement coefficient R were studied. The maximum synergistic coefficient was found to be 12.50 when the H2 SO4 concentration was 0.5 mol.L-1 and the molar fraction of N1923 was 0.5. The synergistic extraction mechanism was also discussed. There were about 90% scandium could be stripped from the loaded organic phase in the synergistic extraction system when the nitric acid was 6 mol.L-1. The result of FT-IR spectra well convinced the conclusion that the synergistic effect owed to the formation of hydrogen bond N-H+...O=P, making the dissociation of proton H of P204 much easier. Finally, after three-stage counter-current extraction and stripping, Sc2 O5 product with a high purity of 90% was obtained from spent sulfuric acid solution by precipitation and calcination.

Introduction scandium(Sc) belongs in the heavy rare earth metal group and use of Sc has continued to increase in many application fields such as light alloy,lighting and fuel-cell electrolytes.Therefore the recovery of Sc become an important research topic.The solid phase extraction(SPE) is one of the most useful separation methods because good separation and enrichment factors are obtainable by using a highly efficient adsorbent(ion exchange resin).Recently,novel extractant,N-[N,N-di(2-ethylhexyl)aminocarbonylmethyl]glycine(DEHAG) was developed and employed the separation of several metal ions1.In this study,we synthesized a novel adsorbent having amic acid type functional group like DEHAG on a silica gel and examined theseparation and recovery of Sc.Experimental Novel adsorbent was synthesized by modyficating an amic acid having glycine group to silica gels and resin in a similar way as synthesis of DEHAG2.An aqueous feed solutioncontaining 0.1 mM each of metal ions including Sc was prepared by dissolving their nitrate salts in an acid solutionand the p H value was adjusted by HNO or HSO and their ammonium salts.A five milliliter of feed solution and an appropriate amount of modified silica gel were mixed in asealed tube for 60 s in a vibrating mixer,followed by gently shaken at 298 K for 12 h to reach equilibrium.The aqueous phase was separated and then the metal concentrations were determined by an ICP-AES.The adsorption A((Ci – Ceq)/Ci) wascaluculated.Results and Discussion The adsorption behavior of metals by using modified adsorbents is shown in Fig.1.As shown in Fig.1 the adsorption of metal ions increased with increasing the p H value and the quantitative recovery of Sc was attained at p H>1 under the experimental conditions,where the adsorption of the other metal ions was very low.This behavior was similar as that obtained in the liquid-liquid extraction with DEHAG.The adsorption was also tested using silica gels and resin without modification,and no adsorption of all the metal ions was observed at pH 1
