Search for carbon stars and DZ white dwarfs in sdss spectra survey through machine learning

Carbon stars and DZ white dwarfs are two types of rare objects in the Galaxy.In this paper,we have applied the label propagation algorithm to search for these two types of stars from Data Release Eight(DR8)of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey(sdss),which is verified to be efcient by calculating precision and recall.From nearly two million spectra including stars,galaxies and QSOs,we have found 260 new carbon stars in which 96 stars have been identified as dwarfs and 7 identified as giants,and 11 composition spectrum systems(each of them consists of a white dwarf and a carbon star).Similarly,using the label propagation method,we have obtained 29 new DZ white dwarfs from sdss DR8.Compared with PCA reconstructed spectra,the 29 findings are typical DZ white dwarfs.We have also investigated their proper motions by comparing them with proper motion distribution of 9,374 white dwarfs,and found that they satisfy the current observed white dwarfs by sdss generally have large proper motions.In addition,we have estimated their efective temperatures by fitting the polynomial relationship between efective temperature and g-r color of known DZ white dwarfs,and found 12 of the 29 new DZ white dwarfs are cool,in which nine are between 6,000 K and 6,600 K,and three are below 6,000 K.

AutoClass is an unsupervised Bayesian classification approach which seeks a maximum posterior probability classification for determining the optimal classes in large data sets. Using stellar photometric data from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (sdss) data release 7 (DR7), we utilize AutoClass to select non-stellar objects from this sample in order to build a pure stellar sample. For this purpose, the differences between PSF (point spread function) magnitudes and model magnitudes in five wavebands are taken as the input of AutoClass. Through clustering analysis of this sample by AutoClass, 617 non-stellar candidates are found. These candidates are identified by NED and SIMBAD databases. Most of the identified sources (13 from SIMBAD and 28 from NED respectively) are extragalactic sources (e.g., galaxies, HII, radio sources, infrared sources), some are peculiar stars (e.g., supernovas), and very few are normal stars. The extragalactic sources and peculiar stars of the identified objects occupy 94.1%. The result indicates that this method is an effective and robust clustering algorithm to find non-stellar objects and peculiar stars from the total stellar sample.

The survey data of Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer(WISE)provide an opportunity for the identification of galaxy clusters.We present an efficient method for detecting galaxy clusters by combining the WISE data with SuperCOSMOS and 2MASS data.After performing star-galaxy separation,we calculate the number of companion galaxies around the galaxies with photometric redshifts previously estimated by the SuperCOSMOS,2MASS and WISE data.A scaled richness Rscal 30 is set as a criterion to identify clusters.From a sky area of 275 deg2of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Stripe 82 region,we identify 302 clusters in the redshift range of 0.1sdss clusters.The results suggest that our method is efficient for identifying galaxy clusters by using the all sky data of the SuperCOSMOS,2MASS and WISE.

Clusters of galaxies have a huge mass which can act as gravitational lenses.Galaxies behind clusters can be distorted by the lenses to form arcs in images.Herein a search was done for giant lensed arcs using the sdss data.By visually inspecting sdss images of newly identified clusters in the sdss DR8 and Stripe 82 data,we discover 8 strong lensing clusters together with additional 3probable and 6 possible cases.The lensed arcs show bluer colors than the member galaxies of clusters.The masses and optical luminosities of galaxy clusters interior to the arcs are calculated.The mass-to-light ratios are found to be in the range of a few tens of M⊙/L⊙,consistent with the distribution of previously known lensing clusters.

Geothermal exploration is a complex process that spans a number of disciplines.Before a decision is made to drill a geothermal well,there is need for an extensive exploration process to determine the most suitable location.The process of evaluating and analyzing data from individual scientific disciplines can be complex and tedious.Attempts have been made at solving this problem using GIS-based tools but the uptake of these tools is often hindered by the limited knowledge of GIS by decision makers.This paper presents an approach for solving the geothermal exploration question through a web-based spatial decision support system(sdss)that incorporates the various geosciences through a multi-criteria spatial decision analysis model.The results reveal a decision-making gap that is to be filled using a novel,automated exploration sdss.This approach hypothesizes an easier and faster decision-making process.The research focuses on Olkaria,an active geothermal area in Kenya,East Africa and highlights a pragmatic approach to identifying priority areas for drilling.It evaluates contributions made by many disciplines in identifying potential sites ideal for harnessing geothermal energy and the gaps that emerge in an effort to synergize the results from the different disciplines.

低面亮度星系(Low Surface Brightness Galaxies,LSBG)是一种表面亮度普遍比夜天光暗的一种星系,在宇宙当中占有不可忽视的比例。侧向低面亮度星系是侧边朝向地球的低面亮度星系,与正向低面亮度星系相比,侧向低面亮度星系由于独特的角度,能展示出侧向的结构。因此,对它们的研究有助于理解低面亮度星系的形成和演化。收集和扩充侧向低面亮度星系的样本是深入开展相关研究的首要任务。然而,侧向低面亮度星系的相关参数难以进行自动化的提取,导致无法开展侧向低面亮度星系的大规模搜寻。当前,斯隆数字巡天(Sloan Digital Sky Survey,sdss)作为世界上最大的巡天项目之一,已经释放出大量的图像。为了在sdss中实现对侧向低面亮度星系自动化搜寻的过程,本文将深度学习中的目标检测和异常检测技术应用到测光图像当中,致力于探究从测光图像中直接搜寻出侧向低面亮度星系样本的新方法,使样本的搜寻和选取过程更加高效。本文的主要研究内容如下:(1)获取了 281个侧向低面亮度星系样本和281张对应的sdss测光图像,对数据集进行标注和划分,制作目标检测算法的训练集和测试集。使用目标检测算法YOLOv5建立搜寻模型,根据训练数据的特点选择出训练效果最佳的数据增强方式、网络结构和损失函数。在完成模型的建立过程后,使用不同的置信度阈值对模型的测试效果进行评估,为后续的大规模搜寻工作确定合理的置信度阈值。(2)获取所有的sdss DR16三波段合成图像,使用建立好的目标检测搜寻模型在938,046张合成图像当中直接对侧向低面亮度星系进行大规模、自动化搜寻,并对搜寻结果进行后续的处理。使用异常检测算法Deep-SVDD建立异常检测模型,得出所有候选体的异常分数,并结合目视检查的方法,去除了候选体当中混有的其他天体,实现了对候选体的进一步筛选,得到筛选后的候选体的星表,为后续的分析工作提供数据。(3)将得到的候选体星表与sdss DR16中的所有星系进行交叉,对未交叉到的候选体进行目视检查,去除了极少数的非侧向低面亮度星系天体,分别得到49,972个交叉到的候选体样本和252个未交叉到的候选体样本的星表。对候选体样本的性质进行了分析,并与传统选取方法作对比。设计并实现了对候选体样本图像进行展示的用户界面,并向用户提供了本文搜寻方法的使用说明,可以让用户充分了解目标检测模型和异常检测模型的使用方式,便于对侧向低面亮度星系的搜寻开展后续的研究。本研究将深度学习算法首次应用到侧向低面亮度星系的搜寻工作中,搜寻到了迄今为止数量最大的侧向低面亮度星系候选体样本集,并提供了所有样本的星表。本研究所建立的目标检测模型摆脱了对测光参数的依赖性,能够在测光图像中直接对侧向低面亮度星系候选体进行定位。此外,本研究建立的异常检测模型能够对异常样本进行有效识别,对搜寻到的候选体实现了进一步的筛选。本研究不仅在数量上对现有的侧向低面亮度星系候选体样本进行了大幅度的扩充,还搜寻出了 sdss DR16测光管道未能探测到的侧向低面亮度星系候选体。后续可利用本文的搜寻方法在其他巡天项目中对侧向低面亮度星系进行搜寻。

类星体（Quasi-Stellar Objects,QSO）是一种极其明亮的活动星系核（Active Galactic Nucleus,AGN）。类星体是迄今为止发现的距离地球最遥远、最明亮的天体,因其在图像上呈现像恒星一样的光点形态,而又不是恒星,所以获得了“类星体”的名称。类星体具有高光度、大红移等特征,被称为“宇宙探针”,对于理解宇宙的演化具有重要意义。因此,类星体的样本搜寻是一项重要的工作。在斯隆数字化巡天（Sloan Digital Sky Survey,sdss）等大型巡天项目中,通常利用测光颜色来筛选类星体候选体。这种传统方法需要先从天文图像中提取光学参数,再根据测光经验公式进行筛选。中国空间站工程巡天望远镜（China Space Station Telescope,CSST）等新一代的巡天项目将会产生海量的观测数据,为了从观测图像中高效地搜寻类星体候选体,需要研究高效的类星体搜寻方法。本研究利用基于深度学习的目标检测技术从天文测光图像中直接分类和检测类星体。研究内容包括:（1）建立了目标检测所需的类星体训练样本。从sdss下载光谱分类为类星体所在的field图像,进行多个波段的图像合成,标注类星体目标框,最终经人工筛选得到包含2028个类星体的2000幅合成图像。（2）建立从sdss测光图像中识别类星体的目标检测模型QSONet。由于类星体在sdss图像中的尺寸小,现有目标检测框架的特征提取网络通常会损失类星体的像素信息。针对这一问题,本文设计并搭建了适应类星体小目标特点的网络,作为QSONet的特征提取模块。在训练和预测过程中,QSONet模型采用二次滑动窗口的策略。通过滑动窗口分割图像,只把有类星体的滑块送到网络中训练,既避免了缩小图像的尺寸,又提高了网络的运行效率。（3）本文使用包含1827个类星体的图像进行训练,在包含201个类星体的200幅图像中,QSONet可成功召回95.5%的类星体。在平衡考虑召回率和检测纯度的情况下,QSONet模型能够达到90.5%的召回率和89.6%的纯度。该模型在单PC机上的检测速度达到4FPS（Frame Per Sec）,中心点平均误差为0.62 arcsec。搭建的QSONet和YOLOv3、Faster RCNN和EfficientDet-D4模型进行了性能对比。实验结果表明本文搭建的QSONet性能表现最优。本研究建立的QSONet模型能够从sdss图像中直接搜索类星体。与传统的搜寻算法相比,QSONet模型不依赖于测光参数,直接根据测光图像中类星体的特征识别类星体。后续将利用本模型对sdss DR17的图像进行大规模地搜寻,以扩充类星体的研究样本。
