Characteristics and sources of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in impervious surface run-off in an urban area in Shanghai, China

Rainwater and run-off from three kinds of impervious surface in the Shanghai urban area,China were *** aromatic hydrocarbons(PAHs) were measured in the samples,and their sources were *** mean sum of the 16 PAH concentrations measured in rainwater and run-offs from ceramic tiles,asphalt roofs,and asphalt roads were 873,1404,1743,and 4023 ng/L,*** PAH concentrations found in this study were moderate compared to PAH concentrations found in run-offs in other *** main PAH components in the rainwater,roof run-off,and asphalt road run-off samples were 3-ring PAHs,3–4-ring PAHs,and 4–6-ring PAHs,*** apportionment results indicated that combustion(47.4%–55.5%) and vehicular emissions(30.5%–33.0%) were the major contributors to PAHs in roof *** emissions were the most significant contributors to asphalt road run-off(47.2%),followed by combustion(23.5%),and petroleum(16.3%).Vehicular emissions and coal and natural gas combustion are therefore the most significant sources of PAHs in run-off from impervious surfaces in the Shanghai urban area.

Aims The Miyun Reservoir is the most important drinking water source for Beijing—the capital of China with a population of more than 16 *** the 1980s,the inflow to the reservoir has been decreasing,which seriously threatens the security of water use in *** goal was to analyze the impact of land use and cover change(LUCC)on run-off yield in the upstream of the Miyun *** In this study,the Soil andWater Assessment Tool(SWAT)was used to simulate the impacts of LUCC on the run-off yield in the Bai River catchment—upstream of the Miyun Reservoir basin in northern *** investigation was conducted using two 6-year historical streamflow records:from 1986 to 1991 and from 2000 to 2005.A split sample procedure was used for model calibration and *** data from 1986 to 1988 and from 2000 to 2002 were used for calibration,while those from 1989 to 1991 and from 2003 to 2005 for *** SWAT calibration was based on monthly measured discharge at Zhangjiafen station at the catchment outlet from Bai River ***,the influence of LUCC on the surface run-off was distinguished from that of climate change on the surface runoff through SWAT scenarios modeling,the twoway analysis of variance(ANOVA),and the rainfall–run-off double-mass analysis in the Bai River *** Findings We found that the SWAT model could be used successfully to accurately simulate run-off yield and different LUCC patterns affecting water quantity in this *** calibraion for the two periods the simulated monthly run-off satisfactorily matched the observed values,with the Nash–Sutcliffe coefficient>0.9 and 0.7 and a coefficient of determination of 0.9 and 0.65 at the outlet station(Zhangjiafen station),while during validation for the two periods the obtained values were 0.85,0.65 and 0.9,0.65,*** the period of 1986–91,both the SWAT scenarios modeling and the analysis of the two-way ANOVA method showed that LUC

Predicting soil erosion hazard in Lattakia Governorate(W Syria)

The main objective of this study is to predict soil erosion in the Lattakia Governorate(W Syria) using the Water Erosion Prediction Project model(WEPP) and to compare the result with that of the RUSLE. Field survey and data collection were carried out, and 44 soil samples were analyzed. In addition, all the necessary input files were prepared for use in the WEPP model and RUSLE. Results show that more than of 80% of the locations studied experience slight to moderate erosion(less than 5 t/ha/y), whereas the rest of the locations experience severe soil erosion hazard. Moreover, the volume of runoff estimated by the WEPP model is in the range of 51 e321 mm, and the R~2 between the simulated soil erosion and the predicted runoff reached 0.68. Interestingly, the R~2 between the WEPP model and RUSLE is 0.56, which indicates a good correlation between the two models.

GIS-Based Multi-Criteria Evaluation to Identify Areas for Soil and Water Conservation in Lower Lake Bogoria Landscapes, Baringo County, Kenya

This study was meant to ensure that there is proper and efficient conservation of soil and water using geospatial tools to enable us identify priority areas to carry out conservation. Over the past years, various fields of study have established how critical it is to conserve these natural resources in the ecosystem and to ensure sustainability in not only green livelihoods but also to enhance living conditions of the life on earth. The aim of this research was to generate high priority sites for establishing soil and water conservation techniques in the Lower Bogoria Landscapes in Baringo, Kenya using GIS-based multicriteria decision analysis. Various criteria were analyzed to generate the final conservation priority sites, such as land use land cover, rainfall runoff, soil erosion and slope. The criteria were assigned weights using the AHP technique and overlayed using the weighted overlay tools to produce the final outputs. Land use land cover maps were generated using supervised maximum likelihood technique, rainfall run-off maps were generated using the SCS-CN method and soil erosion maps were generated using RUSLE model. The final soil and water conservation maps showed that high and moderate priority areas requiring the establishment of techniques and mechanisms to control soil erosion and conserve water increased from 1990 to 2020. In 2020, more than 50% of the total study area was classified as moderate to high priority for water and soil conservation. Soil and water conservation structures such as water pans, percolation tanks, farm ponds and stop dams should be constructed in such areas.
