Why are Nitrogen Concentrations in Plant Tissues Lower under Elevated CO_2? A Critical Examination of the Hypotheses

Plants grown under elevated atmospheric [CO2] typically have decreased tissue concentrations of N compared with plants grown under current ambient [CO2]. The physiological mechanisms responsible for this phenomenon have not been definitely established, although a considerable number of hypotheses have been advanced to account for it. In this review we discuss and critically evaluate these hypotheses. One contributing factor to the decreases in tissue N concentrations clearly is dilution of N by increased photosynthetic assimilation of C. In addition, studies on intact plants show strong evidence for a general decrease in the specific uptake rates （uptake per unit mass or length of root） of N by roots under elevated CO2. This decreased root uptake appears likely to be the result both of decreased N demand by shoots and of decreased ability of the soil-root system to supply N. The best-supported mechanism for decreased N supply is a decrease in transpiration-driven mass flow of N in soils due to decreased stomatal conductance at elevated CO2, although some evidence suggests that altered root system architecture may also play a role. There is also limited evidence suggesting that under elevated CO2, plants may exhibit increased rates of N loss through volatilization and/or root exudation, further contributing to lowering tissue N concentrations.

The uptake and accumulation of di-n-butyl phthalate(DBP)in six leafy vegetables was investigated under hydroponic conditions.The test vegetables were six varieties of Brassica campestris ssp.,including Kangresijiqing(KRSJQ),Xiadiqing(XDQ),Ziyoucai(ZYC),Aijiaohuang(AJH),Shanghaiqing(SHQ)and Gaogengbai(GGB).The root concentration factor(RCF),translocation factor(TF)and transpiration stream concentration factor(TSCF)were calculated in order to compare the difference of uptake and accumulation behaviours of DBP in vegetable varieties.The results showed that DBP was easily concentrated in vegetable roots,but was poorly translocated from the roots to the shoots.Among the six vegetables,the ability of concentrating DBP from the solution to shoots was the highest in GGB,followed by ZYC,KRSJQ,AJH,SHQ and XDQ.High concentrations of DBP(5.0 mg/L)seem to inhibit normal physiological activity in the vegetables,which resulted in a higher RCF and a lower TF and TSCF than in low-concentration treatment.The results will help to evaluate the safety of agricultural products and to provide evidence for screening DBP pollution-safe vegetable cultivars.

Translocation of pharmaceuticals and personal care products(PPCPs)into plant tissues:A review

Occurrence and fate of pharmaceuticals and personal care products(PPCPs)in the environment and the potential consequences for human health is of serious concern.In the current review,we have tried to provide a summary on recent research and an overview of PPCPs in the soil-plant systems,in the environment and analytical methods used for determination of PPCPs in plant tissues.Further review also include highlights on the fate of PPCPs in agricultural soils receiving treated wastewater irrigation or biosolids amendment,and plant uptake of PPCPs under laboratory and field conditions.PPCPs have shown to be released to the environment and may cause significant impacts on different environmental aspects.Plant roots showed their abilities to uptake and transfer of PPCPs into plant tissues.The uptake of PPCPs varies depending on crop type and physiochemical properties of the chemical compound that were exposed.Consumption of contaminated crops with PPCPs residues may cause serious health problems.Liquid chromatography in combination with mass chromatography was found to be the most popular analytical instrument used for PPCPs determination in different samples.Finally,the information gaps and few suggestions for future research have been proposed in this review.
