A model combining basin management and administrative management is currently adopted for the lake and river management in China. In applications, the model suffers many problems, including the confusion of rights and responsibilities of river basin authorities and the dominant governmental agencies, and the lack of effective public participation. In this paper,we employ the Great Lakes Basin in the United States, the Loire-Brittany river Basin in France, the Southeast Basin in the United Kingdom, the Murray-Darling Basin in Australia, and general German model as examples to analyze and summarize the characteristics of their river and lake management modes, regarding river basin authorities, dominant governmental agencies, public participation, and basin management. This study may provide some referable experience for the integrated river basin management in China.

Dissolved inorganic phosphorus (DIP ),dissolved organic phosphorus (DOP ),particulate inorganic phosphorus (P IP ) and particulate organic phosphorus (P OP ) in the Jiaozhou Bay (JZB) and its adjacent major rivers were analyzed during 2001–*** was the major form of dissolved phosphorus in JZB,representing 62%–83% of the total dissolved phosphorus (T DP ),and the P IP concentration generally exceeded the P OP *** concentrations of phosphorus were higher in the north than in the south of the bay, which were related to the fluvial input and water exchange *** dissolved phosphorus concentrations were higher in the autumn and spring than in the summer, while the seasonal variation of particulate phosphorus showed opposite *** distribution of phosphorus is mainly affected by the growth of phytoplankton,desorption/adsorption of DIP from and to particulates, and anthropogenic activities.A preliminary phosphorus budget was *** JZB,riverine input and water exchange flow between JZB and the Huanghai (Yellow) Sea are the major sources of phosphorus, followed by industrial and domestic waste transport, and then atmospheric *** burial efficiency is estimated to be 91%.About 52.2 × 10 6 mol/a of phosphorus were assimilated by phytoplankton,of which about 68% was recycled in the water column and sediment.

In the present study we investigated the alteration in the activity of two metabolic enzymes [Glucose-6-Phosphate Dehydrogenase (G6PDH) and Lactate Dehydrogenase (LDH)] and the histological changes on liver and gills of the African catfish Clarias gariepinus collected from 6 sites along the river Nile, from its spring at Aswan to its estuary at Rosetta and Damietta branches. The results showed that the physical and chemical parameters of the water collected from Damietta and Rosetta branches were higher than those of the water collected from other sites. Remarkable alterations in the activity of the selected enzymes in the liver and muscles of the African catfish were detected. These alterations go in parallel with the elevation in the levels of chemical parameters detected in the water of Damietta and Rosetta branches as a result of pollution stress in these areas. The activity of G6PDH was significantly (p < 0.05) decreased from Aswan to Rosetta and Damietta recording the highest value at Rosetta followed by Damietta water. The activity of LDH showed a significant elevation (p < 0.05) in activity in the liver and muscles of fishes collected from Rosetta and Damietta branches comparing to other sites. These alterations in enzymatic activities were followed, in the present study, by the occurrence of histological lesions and clear damage in liver and gill tissues of the African catfish collected from the same sites. Thus we may conclude that, the altered activities of G6PDH and LDH could be useful biomarkers of water pollution. At the same time, histopathology provides a reliable, easily quantifiable index of low-level toxic stress to a broad range of environmental pollutants.
