In conventional rational harmonic mode-locking, optical pulse trains with the repetition rate of (pn+1)f_c are generated when the modulation frequency of the in-cavity modulator is set at f_m = (n+1/p)f_c, where n and p are both integers, f_c is the fundamental cavity frequency. In this paper, we report that rational harmonic mode locking phenomenon takes place in the fiber lasers when the modulation frequency is set at f_m =(n+2/p)f_c. The pulse generations are experimentally demonstrated when the numerator of the rational corresponds to 2 in 5th and 7th order rational harmonic mode-locking.

Swept source optical coherence tomography(SS-OCT)is a new noninvasive technique for assessing tissue.Although it hasadvantages,such as being label-free,noninvasive,and with high resolution,it also has drawbacks:there has been no indepth research into identifying the driving of swept source.Based on preliminary research,we demonstrate a novel drivingmodulation method of a fiber Fabry–Perot tunable filter ranging phase adjustable as a tool for making bandwidth compensation of a swept laser source.This novel method is analyzed in detail;a swept laser source with a sweep rate of100.5 kHz over a range of 152.25 nm and at a center wavelength of 1335.45 nm is demonstrated.

A compact and stable all-normal-dispersion mode-locked ring fiber laser with the repetition rate of 312 MHz is obtained with a wavelength-division multiplexing isolator. The compressed pulse is nearly transform-limited and the pulse width is 118 fs. It exhibits an optical efficiency of 50% and the maximum output power is about 205 mW with a 410 mW pump.

We report on the generation of Q-switched and Q-switched mode-locked （QML） pulses in an erbium-doped fiber ring laser by using a polyvinyl alcohol （PVA） -based gold nanorod （GNR） saturable absorber （SA）. The PVA- based GNR SA has a modulation depth of -4.8% and a non-saturable loss of -26.9% at 1.5 μm. A Q-switched pulse train with a repetition rate varying from 18.70 to 39.85 kHz and a QML pulse train with an envelope repetition rate tuning from 20.31 to 31.50 kHz are obtained. Moreover, the lasing wavelengths of the Q-switched pulses can be flexibly tuned by introducing a narrow bandwidth, tunable filter into the laser cavity. The results demonstrate that the GNRs exhibit good optical performance and can find a wide range of applications in the field of laser technology.

We experimentally study the chaotic behaviors in a compact all-fiber erbium-doped fiber ring laser （ED-FRL） with an added Mach-Zehnder interferometer （MZI） by using a phase-modulation method. A piezo-electric ceramic transducer （PZT） is incorporated in the MZI to introduce single-frequency phase modulation. The coexistence of intermitteney and period-doubling bifurcation routes to chaos in the EDFRL system is observed by adjusting the modulation frequency or the phase modulation depth in the experiment. In addition, the EDFRL presents irregular multi-longitudinal-mode oscillation with a definite linear polarization when operating at intensity chaos state.

A compact monolithic Nd：YAG non-planar ring laser with diffusion-bonded Cr4＋：YAG is demonstrated,and high stable pulsed single-frequency laser at 1.06 μm is realized.Theoretical analysis and simulation results of pulsed laser parameters are illustrated.14.96-kW maximum peak power,pulse-width of 4.8 ns is achieved for single-frequency operation.

We propose and demonstrate broadband Brillouin slow light using a multiple-longitudinal-mode tunable fiber laser as Brillouin pump. A tunable broadband Brillouin pump with a tuning range from 1 520 to 1 555 nm is generated using a fiber ring laser with a semiconductor optical amplifier （SOA） as its gain medium. The pump spectrum consists of a large number of longitudinal modes separated by 6 MHz. The 3-dB bandwidth is about 11.5 GHz, and its fluctuation is less than 100 MHz within the tuning range. An 8-Gb/s data signal can be delayed by up to 83.0 ps （bit error rate 〈 10^- 9） at 17-dBm pump power.

Lock-in phenomenon in ring laser gyroscopes is directly related to effective backscattering, which includes both backscattering and nonuniform loss. Effective backscattering often differs in different states and can only be reflected in a working state via online estimation in the working state. Moreover, effective backscattering can result in the intensity modulation of beams in the opposite directions. The effective backscattering parameters can be obtained by measuring the weak modulations in the intensity signals under different rotation rates and by using the curve-fitting method. This letter demonstrates the online estimation of backscattering.

Dynamic behaviors of the erbium-doped fiber laser （EDFL） with dual-frequency loss modulation are experimentally investigated. Frequency-locked states with their winding numbers which form the devil＇s staircase are observed in this kind of lasers. In the unlocked regions, the output state changes from quasiperiodicity to chaos under increasing modulation index, which demonstrates a different route to chaos from the conventional loss-modulated EDFLs with a single modulation frequency. The chaos output in the dual-frequency loss-modulated EDFLs shows less harmonic components of the modulation frequency in the corresponding power spectrum, indicating the improvement of the randomness of the chaotic signals.
