We have developed an asymmetric ring opening reaction of azabenzonorbornadiene with substituted piperazine. By increasing the amount of catalyst (from 2.5 to 5%) and ligands (5 to 10%) as well as addition of ammonium iodide, the products can be obtained in high yield and the reaction time shortened dramatically, but the ee values were rather low.

Mild and highly regioselective synthesis of biaryl acids via Rh （I）-catalyzed cross-dehydrogenative coupling of benzoic acids using sodium chlorite as oxidant

Optically active β-amino acids,especially β-amino acids with a stereocenter at the α-position,are known as important core structures widely emerged in various natural products and pharmaceutical compounds. Recently,we have successfully developed a highly efficient rhodium-catalyzed conjugate addition/enantioselective protonation of arylboronic acids to N-tosyl protected a-aminomethyl tert-butyl acrylate through the use of a chiral diene ligand with water as proton source,giving access to a series of enantioenriched β-amino esters in high yields with excellent enantioselectivities(up to 98%ee). The synthetic utility of the obtained unique β-amino esters is demonstrated by efficient transformation into particularly interesting benzo-heterocycle architectures.

A mild and efficient synthesis for the biaryl acids via rhodium-catalyzed cross-dehydrogenative coupling reaction has been developed. This novel protocol with sodium chlorite as an oxidant featured many advantages such as mild reaction conditions, high regioselectivity, tolerance of various functional groups, and good to excellent yields.
