When the Chinese Revolution led by the Communist Party eventually prevailed in 1949, Zhou Zuoren （1885-1967） wrote to Zhou Enlai--the first premier of the People＇s Republic--in the hope of reversing the verdict on his ＂culpability.＂ To what extent, Zhou Zuoren asked, was he, a wartime collaborator with the Japanese enemy, recognizable not only as an offender of the traditional moral norms （mingjiao）, but also as a traitor of the nation （minzu）？ Before the Second Sino-Japanese War broke out, Zhou Zuoren had long been viewed as a leading figure of the Chinese ＂New Culture.＂ Zhou Zhuoren＇s sudden decision to collaborate with the Japanese Occupation in 1938 then turned out to be a traumatic and scandalous event for the Chinese intellectual community. The whole case of his collaboration exposed, in disturbing ways, the convergences and the divergences of law, morality and politics in China＇s modern nation building. By revisiting this controversial case, this paper attempts at a symptomatic reading of the following texts：＂An Open Letter to Zhou Zuoren＂ written collectively by a group of Chinese intellectuals, court documents of the post-war trials, and Zhou Zuoren＇s letter to Zhou Enlai. This re-reading focuses on the domain of the cultural-political rhetoric, within which Zhou＇s contentious ＂culpability＂ has turned into an ambiguous zone of modern law, traditional morality, and nationalism in East Asia.

The Book of Songs is a book of propriety passing on rites and teaching people by the form of poetry with unique logic and rhetoric.“Guan Ju”is the most typical poem deducing the propriety of humans from the laws of nature,which is acceptable,convinced and obeyed by the people naturally,friendly and eloquently.Therefore,the logic and rhetoric in The Book of Songs can be reconciled and self-consistent in the poetic thinking of the unity of heaven and humans.

As part of Routledge's expansive series focused on "Studies in rhetoric and Communication,one will find Scot Barnett's (2017) rhetorical Realism: rhetoric, Ethics, and the Ontology of Things. Barnett's contribution is a good reminder that philosophy can benefit from the insights derived from the rhetorical tradition, especially when it comes to speculating about reality. This point is clearly evident in Bametfs thoughtful articulation of the claim,"that attunements to nonhuman beings and extrahuman realities are nothing new for rhetoric"(5). Barnett saliently argues for how rhetoric is ideally situated to help new philosophical schools of thought like speculative realism.

In this paper we propose to focus on so-called speech genres, traditionally understood as a set of tacit instructions broadly constraining the form and content of our discursive productions. More specifi cally, and according to Peirce's categorial scheme, we suggest speech genres can be considered as ‘thirds', or purposeful and general ‘laws' overdetermining speech and its regularities. As such, the study of their semiotic mechanisms would fall within the sphere of Peirce's ‘speculative rhetoric', one of the three branches of his semeiotics. Overall, following Lyne, we suggest that any speech genre relates to three kinds of rhetorical ‘habits' —habits of representation, habits of objectifi cation, and habits of interpretation—which explain a sense of ‘reasonableness' permeating any discursive practice in society. We suggest that the task of discursive rhetorics should be to delineate, for given cultural communities, the productive and interpretive norms and mechanisms which govern the determination of discourse and elicit an intended interpretation on the interpreter's side.

The interrelation of rhetoric and hermeneutics is rooted in our existential historicity and linguisticity.rhetorical competence and education are integral approaches to a better understanding of being-in-the-world.Inspired by Platonic dialectic and Aristotle’s phronesis,Gadamer has redefined true rhetoric and revived the epistemological and ethical dimensions in rhetoric in his philosophical hermeneutics.This article investigates four aspects in Gadamer’s rehabilitation of rhetoric.First,rhetoric as ethics.rhetoric transcends the dualism of self-other,subject-object through its dialogical structure,and is composed of understanding and application as a whole in hermeneutic experience.Second,rhetoric as discursive knowledge.rhetoric is oriented to eine Sache(reality)itself,and is endowed with primitive experience of truth.Its own validity as discursive knowledge is not confined to scientific methodology,and is essential for natural and human sciences.Third,rhetoric as component of linguisticity.The ubiquity of rhetoric makes it an integral component of linguisticity.The capacity to use metaphors,symbols,allegory is an important aspect of our linguisticity,revealing the rhetorical quality in language.Lastly,hermeneutic theories inspired by rhetoric.Gadamer’s rehabilitation of rhetoric is beneficial for the development of philosophical hermeneutics and humanist education in modern world.

The article explores some of the important features of pre-Qin Chinese rhetoric and challenges it poses to traditional Western rhetoric,with the former being seen as harmonic or self-effacing for its purpose and paradoxical for its epistemological underpinning.The author does not intend to suggest that the Chinese tradition is the right path to rhetoric,but at least it points to an alternative to approaching this language art as defined by Aristotle.

翻译学是一门边缘学科,其理论与许多语言学科具有密切的关系。作者通过大量例证,阐述了翻译学与语法学、语义学、语体学、语用学和修辞学之间的联系。文章的最后部分分析了美国著名作家赛珍珠的译作All Men Are Brothers(水浒传)的一个选段,以使读者由一斑窥全豹,认识到即使像赛珍珠这样著名的作家,由于没有掌握现代的翻译理论和技巧,败笔不少,许多词句诘屈聱牙、生硬晦涩,令人不知所云。为此,作者认为,文学家不等于翻译家,两者决不等同。翻译家有其自身的特点。要做一名翻译家,除了参加大量的翻译实践外,还必须精通翻译理论和技巧。在进行翻译实践时,要注意翻译理论运用,注意翻译学与其他有关语言学科之间的联系,注意不同学科之间的相互渗透,以译出内容忠实,文笔流利,思想畅达的佳作。

With the development of the rhetoric study from the origins in ancient Athens and The rhetoric of Aristotle to the formation of modern Communication Study at the beginning of the twentieth century,the rhetoric Study changed in dynamic and its concepts and theories merged and formed the foundations of Communication Study which focused on personal communication and speech rhetoric skills at that time.At the beginning of the twentieth century,although the Neo-Aristotelian rhetorical scholars from classic rhetoric approach created methodologies and enriched the content of Communication Study under the influence of humanistic study and social science study,but the Communication discipline was still in the embarrassing position.During World War I and World War II,most scholars with backgrounds of social science,history and anthropology carried out the studies of propaganda wars and the message disseminating,and explored the military powers and governments’access to the media and developed serial communication modes from the social science perspective,which laid the foundation for Communication discipline in the academic field.The author analyzed the rhetoric and Social Science origins of Communication study in Boxing Plato’s Shadow:an Introduction to the Study of Human Communication,which is beneficial and helpful to understand the academic origins of Communication study and its cross-disciplined and embarrassing positions.
