Inspired by genetic algorithm(GA),an improved genetic algorithm(IGA)is proposed.It inherits the main idea of evolutionary computing,avoids the process of coding and decoding inorder to probe the solution in the state space directly and has distributed computing version.Soit is faster and gives higher precision.Aided by IGA,a new optimization strategy for theflexibility analysis and retrofitting of existing heat exchanger networks is presented.A case studyshows that IGA has the ability of finding the global optimum with higher speed and better preci-sion.

Heat Integration has been established over the last decades as a proven chemical engineering methodol- ogy. Two design implementations are often used in the industry： grassroots and retrofit. Although various methods have been developed for retrofit, it still needs more development to ensure simultaneously thermodynamic feasibility and economic viability. In this paper, a novel graphical approach has been developed to facilitate the understanding of the current situation and scope of improvement. The retrofit Tracing Grid Diagram presents all streams and heat exchangers in temperature scale and the heat exchangers are clearly separated from each other, enabling clear visualisation of the current state. The tool incorporates the previously developed Cross-Pinch Analysis as well as path approach for retrofit. Additionally, the non-vertical heat transfer can be evaluated. The application of the developed tool has been validated on an oil refinery case study. The applicability of the tool is evident as it can reveal additional options for modification that none of the previous methods considered.

Crude distillation unit(CDU)is regarded as the main energy consumer in the entire refinery process.In this paper,the process simulation software and the energy management software are used to simulate the flowsheet and analyze the energy consumption,respectively.Stream data obtained from an existing CDU are applicable in the pinch analysis.To reduce the amount of cross-pinch heat transfer,three approaches of resequencing,repiping,and adding heat exchangers are adopted.Compared with the existing CDU,the results demonstrate that the inlet temperature of the furnace can be increased by 25.4℃,the amount of hot and cold utilities can be reduced by 15.1%and 19.6%,respectively.The economic evaluation indicates that the operating cost is saved by 8×106$/a,and the payback period is about 9 months.

Aiming at a comprehensive assessment of energy-saving retrofitting effect on existing buildings,a calculation method is developed to adjust energy-saving quantity in standard condition for comparison under the same conditions. A mathematical model,method theory and calculation steps are given. Error analysis results show that this method can be applied accurately to practical engineering projects. In a case study of energy-saving quantity assessment before and after retrofitting on a certain hospital in Shanghai,with energy simulation software TRNSYS,detailed application of this method is introduced and analyzed. The method is applied to the case of energy-saving quantity assessment to a hospital in Shanghai before and after retrofitting with the energy simulation software TRNSYS.

Energy efficiency has become an important feature in the design of process plants with the rising cost of energy and the more stringent environmental regulations being implemented worldwide. In South Africa, as elsewhere, most process plants built during the era of cheap energy place little emphasis on the need for energy recovery due to the abundance of cheap utilities sources such as coal. In most of these plants, there exist significant potential for substantial process heat recovery by conceptual design of the heat recovery system. By maximizing heat recovery from the processes, there will be a reduction in the process utilities requirement and the associated environmental effects. Pinch analysis has been demonstrated to be a simple but very effective tool for heat integration and optimization of chemical plants. This study uses the pinch principle to retrofit the heat exchanger networks (HEN) of the crude distillation unit of an integrated petroleum refinery to evolve a HEN that features optimum energy recovery. The network was further relaxed by trading off energy cost with capital cost to obtain an optimal HEN topology not too different from the existing network. The simulation works were implemented in AspenPlus v8.0 environment. Analysis revealed that 34 per cent saving on energy usage per annum is realizable. This significant saving in energy also results in diminished gaseous pollutants associated with energy usage.

Since the first batch of 350-MW supercritical utility boilers was put into operation, the exhaust flue gas temperature of the boilers has always been higher than the designed value. The main reason is that the heat absorbed by the air heater is not sufficient. In Huaneng Dongfang Power Plant, the exhaust flue gas temperature is lowered through modifications to the economizer and the air heater. The experimental results reveal that every year, each boiler could save 3 850 tons of standard coal and reduce 85 tons of SO2 and 9 000 tons of CO2 respectively after retrofit.

In Yuanbaoshan Power Plant. it was dueto the Problems of the steam generator that theNo.2 unit, the ratedload of which was 600MW took load only from 400 MW to 420 MWin the first period of commercial operation.After ten years of continuous retro fit andapplication of improved technology, somemajor problems of unit were resolved step bystep and the operation level was continuouslyimproved. Now it can operate steadily from550 W to 580 MW.

The assessment of an energy retrofit necessarily requires an energy measurement campaign before (base year energy consumption) and after (post retrofit energy consumption) the retrofit. Only in this way is it possible to reach a safe conclusion, on the true retrofit impact. In addition, a number of adjustments are necessary to secure that the retrofit impact on energy consumption is effectively isolated, i.e., which we report on the true retrofit impact and not, for example, on external variations, such as a more mild winter. This paper introduces a conceptual framework for taking account, in the retrofit impact assessment, of three external parameters: weather, indoor comfort and space occupancy. The broader strategy behind this work is to develop a comprehensive methodology that would allow a cost efficient, fast and accurate assessment of energy retrofits in buildings. This would allow insight, on the investor side, as to the prudence of his investment and, and in this way, could help the proliferation of the practice of energy retrofits. The adjustment methodology, introduced here, is a first step in this direction.
