More than 170 years after causing the potato famine in Ireland,late blight is still considered one of the most devastating crop *** potato breeding efforts depend on natural sources of resistance to protect crops from the rapidly evolving late blight pathogen,Phytophthora *** have identified and mapped a novel broad-spectrum disease resistance gene effective against *** from the wild,diploid potato species Solanum *** resistance gene enrichment sequencing(drenseq)was used to confirm the uniqueness of the identified *** and GenSeq-based mapping of the resistance,referred to as Rpi-blb4,alongside recombinant screening,positioned the locus responsible for the resistance to potato chromosome *** interval spans approximately 2.3 Mb and corresponds to the DM reference genome positions of 11.25 and 13.56 Mb.

Potato is the most important non-cereal food crop worldwide and consumed by more than a billion *** and pathogens represent a serious and continuing threat to potato *** of the most widespread and economically significant diseases are late blight,nematodes and *** ability to withstand multiple biotic and abiotic stresses is critical for wild *** the availability of significant germplasm resources including the Commonwealth Potato Collection(CPC)at the James Hutton Institute and improved genomics methods,the potential to exploit natural biodiversity is considerable to secure potatoes as a major food source in the *** the potato genome has provided unprecedented insight into the distribution and organisation of genes that underpin *** have developed a gene-specific target enrichment and sequencing platform,renseq,to more rapidly map and clone functional NB-LRR genes that are effective against the major potato *** resistance gene enrichment sequencing(drenseq)enables the high-confidence identification and complete sequence validation of functional resistance genes in *** have shown that the technology can direct parental selection in potato breeding programs,confirms transgene integrity in GM crops and enables high-throughput allele *** study reveals a very limited base of utilised resistances in all major potato cultivars but has identified additional and currently very effective resistances in potato varieties that could be combined with the help of the *** combine the most complementary resistances,we can assess the diversity of the Phytophthora *** pathogen populations through a similar enrichment-sequencing based approached referred to as *** combination of drenseq and PenSeq enables,for the first time,a comprehensive Pathogen/Crop coevolution study on a global scale.
