This study was performed to build region-specific reference ranges of peripheral blood lymphocyte subsets for Chinese healthy adults from the young to the elderly and analyze the trends of changes in lymphocyte subsets for evaluating the impact of age on the values.151 healthy adults aged 19-86 were recruited based on the SENIEUR protocol.Three sets of reference ranges were finally built applicable for the healthy young(19-44 years),middle-aged(45-64 years) and elder adults(≥65).Comparisons in parameters among the three cohorts showed that a statistically significant increase in CD16CD56+ NK cell was observed between the middle-aged and elder cohorts,whereas for the majority of the parameters,a significant decline was observed between the young and the middle-aged cohorts.Further results showed that inverse correlations were observed between the age and CD19+ B,CD3+ T,CD3+CD4+ T,CD4+CD45RA+CD62L+ nave T cell and CD4+CD28+/CD4+,while the positive one was identified between the age and the NK cell.These significant changes of the most of immune parameters provided evidence for immunosenescence.Notably,T cell activation markers of CD8+CD38+ and CD8+HLA-DR+ showed reverse trends of association with age,which provides a clue for further researches on the mechanisms underlying the paradoxical clinical presentation of the elder patients.

There is a lack of accurate pediatric reference intervals(RIs) in China, with most commonly used RIs established without consideration of the effect of age and gender. The Pediatric reference Intervals in China(PRINCE) project aims to establish and verify pediatric RIs for 31 common laboratory measurands.The project will be a large, multicenter cross-sectional study:14,490 healthy children and adolescents aged up to 19 years will be surveyed by 10 children's hospitals and one pediatric department of a university hospital. To evaluate the feasibility and efficiency of the study methods, 602 children were surveyed in the pilot phase of the PRINCE study in April 2017: it found that some measurands were distinctly age dependent and that there were differences between values for males and females. The results of the pilot study affirmed the necessity of the PRINCE project for Chinese pediatrics. The pilot also indicated potential difficulties in the full survey, e.g., difficulties in recruiting children aged under 3 years and insufficient collection of blood samples from infants. The operation of the PRINCE project has been modified based on the findings in the pilot study toward improving the validity of the PRINCE project and promoting its openness and transparency.

The investigation of concentration characteristics of reference evapotranspiration(ETref) is important for water resources management. The concentration index(CI), concentration degree(CD) and concentration period(CP) are used to investigate the concentration characteristics of ETref and the relationship between ETref concentration and precipitation concentration at sub-monthly timescale based on the daily climatic variables from 1966 to 2015 in 27 meteorological stations at the southern and northern slopes of Tianshan Mountains in China. It was found that the CI of ETref is about 0.40 and less concentrated than precipitation in the study area. At the southern slope, the maximum ETref appears in late June and is earlier than the maximum precipitation(early July), ETref distributes more equally than precipitation, and the CI, CD and CP of these two variables do not show significant change based on the Mann–Kendall test. At the northern slope, both the maximum ETref and precipitation appear in early July, and ETref is more dispersed than precipitation. During the study period, the maximum ETref at the northern slope tends to appear earlier due to the impacts of wind speed, relative humidity, sunshine duration, and air temperature. ETref concentration does not match the precipitation concentration in the study area, particularly at the southern slope. The mismatch between ETref and precipitation concentration within a year reveals the water resources pressure on environmental, social and economic sustainability in the study area.

Background: A correct thyroid function reference range is important for the accurate diagnosis of thyroid disease during pregnancy. However, there is no consensus on whether thyroid function reference ranges in Chinese population should follow the America Thyroid Association (ATA) guidelines. This study aimed to establish a thyroid function reference range more suited to the Chinese population by evaluating the current thyroid function reference range in pregnant Chinese women and comparing it to the ATA guidelines. Methods: A total of 52,027 pregnant women were enrolled from January 2013 to December 2016. Thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH), free thyroxine (FT4), and thyroid peroxidase antibody (TPOAb) levels were tested during the first and third trimesters of pregnancy. reference ranges of TSH and FT4 were established from the 2.5th and 97.5th percentiles of the TPOAb-negative population of women. The Mann-Whitney U test was used to compare thyroid hormones between the TPOAb-positive and TPOAbnegative groups. Results: We obtained that the TSH reference ranges were 0.03 to 3.52 mU/L and 0.39 to 3.67 mU/L, and the FT4 reference ranges were 11.7 to 19.7 pmol/L and 9.1 to 14.4pmol/L, in the firstand third trimester, respectively. If we used the 2011 ATA criteria about 7.0% and 4.0% pregnant women would be over diagnosed in first and third trimester, respectively, compared with local population thyroid hormone reference. When we compared our local criteria with the new 2017 ATA criteria, about 1.2% and 0.8% pregnant women would have a missed diagnosis in first and third trimester, respectively. Conclusions: Based on our data, which is in line with the current ATA guidelines, a population-based thyroid function reference range would be the first choice for diagnosis of thyroid disease during pregnancy in China. In case such population-based thyroid function reference ranges are unavailable in the east of China, our reference ranges can be adopted, if the same assay is used.

Background: Lack of available reference values in a research setting under local conditions can be a drawback for beginners, as the accuracy of data from control samples cannot be checked at the beginning of a research project. This affects comparisons with data from test samples. To avoid these complications in their research projects,beginners tend to have a greater number of animals in the control group compared to test groups in order to have control group measurements within 2 SDs of the mean.Methods: As non-availability of reference values was a long-felt need, the described project was conducted in order to establish a reference database for selected haematological, biochemical and physiological parameters using apparently healthy Sprague-Dawley rats bred in the Animal House of Faculty of Medicine, University of Colombo(UCFM).Results: Differences in mean values of packed cell volume(PCV), mean corpuscular volume(MCV) and mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration(MCHC), serum creatinine and blood glucose levels between the two genders were statistically significant. Lipid profile measurements did not differ significantly between genders, but mean and median values of triglycerides(TG) between male and female rats showed a difference of more than 10 mg/dL. The liver enzymes alkaline phosphatase(AP)and aspartate aminotransferase(AST) were also statistically significantly different between sexes. Despite wide variation in mean alanine aminotransferase(ALT)between sexes, the difference was not statistically significant.Conclusion: The findings of this project should support to a certain extent the"Reduction" aspect of the 3 Rs concept of Russell and Burch by reducing the number of Sprague-Dawley rats used in future research projects at UCFM.

A model reference adaptive control(MRAC)with smooth switching scheme was proposed for piecewise linear systems,and the method was utilized in turbofan engine control to avoid the discontinuity of control input.In this scheme,each sub-region of the operating envelope had its own MRAC controller,and smooth indicator function based smooth switching scheme was introduced to switch multiple controllers smoothly at the boundary of adjacent sub-regions.The Lyapunov stability analysis indicated that the proposed smooth switching scheme can guarantee the convergence of the closed-loop system during the controllers switching.The tracking error system was converted into a switched system to analyze the global stability of the closed-loop system.The advantage of the method was that the chattering of system output and instability caused by asynchronous switching can be eliminated.The simulation illustrates the effectiveness of the proposed control scheme in comparison with the existing MRAC controller with gain scheduling for turbofan engine.

There are three major challenges for climatic data availability for reference Evapotranspiration (ET0) calculations in Bosnia and Herzegovina:limited data availability,discontinuity of data records,and low station density.The main objective of this study was to apply reliable methods to calculate and spatially distribute ET0,while considering the impact of the elevation.A 20 m spatial resolution map was created for mean ET0 values at monthly,vegetation period (April-September) and annual temporal resolution at municipality (143 municipalities),regional (4 regions) and national spatial resolutions.108 weather stations for the period 1961-2016 (56 years) were utilized for spatial interpolation of ET0 using kriging with external drift method.The required elevation for ET0 estimation at each grid node was ext'acted from the digital elevation model of Bosnia and Herzegovina.ET0 was calculated using FAO-56 PenmanMonteith,and in cases where only minimum and maximum temperature data were available the Hargreaves-Samani equation adjusted with locally appropriate empirical radiation coefficient was used.A gradual decrease of mean ET0 values from the southern to central and northern to central part of the country is notable.For the all seasons (monthly,vegetation and annually),the southern region has greater ET0 than the other three regions (north,west and central-east),which are similar.The long-term mean annual ET0 for Bosnia and Herzegovina is 716 mm,approximately 78% (559 mm) of which occurs during in the vegetation period.
