An important issue in visual word comprehension literature is whether or not semantic access is mediated by phonological processing. In this paper, we present a Chinese individual, YGA, who provides converging evidence to directly address this issue. YGA has sustained damage to the left posterior superior and middle temporal lobe, and shows difficulty in orally name pictures and reading printed words aloud. He makes phonological errors on these tasks and also semantic errors on picture naming, indicating a deficit at accessing the phonological representations for output. However, he is intact at understanding the meaning of visually presented words. Such a profile challenges the hypothesis that semantic access in reading is phonologically mediated and provides further evidence for the universal principle of direct semantic access in reading.

AIM: To investigate the effect of age on reading acuity and reading speed in attaining text information in healthy eyes.METHODS: reading acuity, critical print size, reading speed and maximum reading speed were measured in groups of 40 children (8 to 12 years old), 40 teenagers (13 to 19 years old), 40 young adults (20 to 39 years old), and 40 adults (40 years old and above) using the Buari-Chen Malay reading Chart [contextual sentences (CS) set and random words (RW) set] in a cross-sectional study design.RESULTS: reading acuity was significantly improved by 0.04 logMAR for both CS set and RW set from children to teenagers, then gradually worsened from young adults to adults (CS set: 0.06 logMAR;RW set: 0.08 logMAR). Critical print size for children showed a significant improvement in teenagers (CS set: 0.14 logMAR;RW set: 0.07 logMAR), then deteriorated from young adults to adults by 0.09 logMAR only for CS set. reading speed significantly increased from children to teenagers,[CS set: 46.20 words per minute (wpm);RW set: 42.06 wpm], then stabilized from teenagers to young adults, and significantly reduced from young adults to adults (CS set: 28.58 wpm;RW set: 24.44 wpm). Increment and decrement in maximum reading speed measurement were revealed from children to teenagers (CS set: 39.38 wpm;RW set: 43.38 wpm) and from young adults to adults (CS set: 22.26 wpm;RW set: 26.31 wpm) respectively.CONCLUSION: The reference of age-related findings in term of acuity and speed of reading should be incorporated in clinical practice to enhance reading assessment among healthy eyes population.

Optically stimulated luminescence(OSL) reading systems are becoming smaller and capable of real-time detection. To improve real-time and multipurpose radiation dosimetry readings, we built a real-time continuous-wave(RCW) OSL reading system. This system is both small and lightweight, and it employs powerful laser excitation(478 mW/cm^2) at the dosimetry probe location. We investigate the possibility of using the RCW mode to read the radiation luminescence(RL) or OSL by using a singlecrystal Al_2O_3:C dosimeter in a low-dose-rate137 Cs y field.Our results indicate that the RL/OSL follows a stable and uniform distribution. The minimum detected doses associated with the RL, OSL, and RL + OSL signals are2.1 9 10^(-2), 3.17 9 10^(-1), and 5.7 9 10^(-2) l Gy, respectively. This device provides a framework for the future development of applications for practical radiation dose measurements.

The impact of reading on subjective well-being and implications for the publishing industry: evidence from China

The publishing industry considers launching nationwide reading as its responsibility,as the national reading campaign has become a primary national strategy in China.However,research rarely studies how reading impacts on an individuals subjective well-being and the comparison between reading mediums.This study explored how diverse reading mediums affect subjective well-being,using data from the Chinese General Social Survey(CGSS2017).The study found that both paper reading and digital reading can improve individuals'subjective well-being.Besides,loneliness and perceived fair play mediation roles between reading mediums and subjective well-being.The results suggest that the publishing industry should further ramp up the publishing convergence,insist on putting social benefits in first place,and provide correct guidance to the public.

This review,which can be seen as a scoping review,highlights 92 empirical studies about the learning and instruction of reading Chinese as an additional language(CAL)published in English between 1976 and 2018.It first identifies and evaluates the trends of CAL reading research over the past four decades,including the developmental trajectory of the field,topics that are hot versus those not-so-hot,populations that are widely studied versus under studied,research methods adopted in the selected studies,and the most widely cited articles.Second,the review examines direct evidence that supports effective practices of CAL reading instruction and explores two tracks of studies:high-evidence versus low-evidence practices.This review concludes with thoughts on the future directions of CAL reading research inspired by trends in the areas of literacy,second language acquisition(SLA),and teaching Chinese as a second/foreign language(TSCL/TCFL).To be specific,there is a need for the field to pay equal attention to learning to read and reading to learn.

The section on reading occupies quite a large amount of space in the Philosophical Investigations(PI)and Wittgenstein makes little changes to it in the course of composing the book.This shows that the section on reading is important.This paper analyzes Wittgenstein’s treatment of the philosophical problem of reading in detail.It shows that Wittgenstein rejects six philosophical ideas about what reading is and employs three different methods.This paper also shows that the section on reading is not only important for grasping Wittgenstein’s discussion on understanding,but also for comprehending the whole of PI.

The Effects of Attention Cueing on English reading on Mobile Phones

The purpose of this quasi-experimental study is to examine whether attention cueing benefits learners of ancient Egyptian culture using mobile-assisted instrumentation.A self-regulatory,mobile phone based set of visualizations depicting ancient Egyptian culture served as the primary instrument.A total of 50 learners of English as a foreign language(EFL)from two sections of a reading course were randomly assigned to one of two groups.First,the participants were tested to assess their English reading level and prior knowledge of Egyptian culture.Next,they were randomly assigned to one of two modes:picture-plus-text or picture-plus-text-plus-signal.Immediately after experimental treatment,participants were administered tests of pictorial recall,matching,jigsaw puzzles,and retention as well as cognitive load measurement and attitude questionnaires.Experimental treatment was the independent variable,while the comprehension test,cognitive load questionnaire,and attitude questionnaire were the dependent variables.The results indicated that learners in the cueing condition outperform those in a non-cueing condition for matching and total score,but not for retention.The analysis of cognitive load revealed that learners in the cueing condition experience lower germane load than those in the non-cueing condition.However,the result of the questionnaires indicated that all the students felt mobile phones were convenient and useful in English learning regardless of the presence or not of attention cueing.The results stress the importance of presenting attention-capturing arrows in external representation as it can result in better learning efficiency.

In view of the recent rapid development of coastal engineering in our country and to fill the ur gent demand for a suitable current meter to measure near surface currents, the Ocean University of Qingdao designed a propeller type SLC9 - 2 Direct reading Current Meter of excellent dynamic char acteristics and not much affected by waves-The model is rationally designed, small and light, stable and reliable in operation, and economical in power consumption. It can be used to measure current speed and direction in near surface layers , especially in ultra- shallow water in oceans, rivers, lakes, reservoirs, estuaries, and ports-This paper focuses on the major properties, technical cruxes, experimental results, and applications of the model and touches briefly on its dynamic effectiveness with horizontal formations.
