The study of biological cells in terms of mesoscopic, nonequilibrium, nonlinear, stochastic dynamics of open chemical systems provides a paradigm for other complex, self-organizing systems with ultra-fast stochastic fluctuations,short-time deterministic nonlinear dynamics, and long-time evolutionary behavior with exponentially distributed rare events, discrete jumps among punctuated equilibria, and catastrophe.

Recent progress of the quantum molecular dynamics model for describing the dynamics of heavy-ion collisions is viewed, in particular the nuclear fragmentation, isospin physics, particle production and in-medium effect, hadron-induced nuclear reactions, hypernucleus, etc.The neck fragmentation in Fermi-energy heavy-ion collisions is investigated for extracting the symmetry energy at subsaturation densities. The isospin effects, in-medium properties, and the behavior of high-density symmetry energy in medium-and high-energy heavy-ion collisions are thoroughly discussed. The hypernuclide dynamics formed in heavy-ion collisions and in hadron-induced reactions is analyzed and addressed in the future experiments at the high-intensity heavy-ion accelerator facility(HIAF).

Four new [CunIn]-based coordination polymers, [{Cu4(μ3-I)4(mbbm)2}·2DMF]n (1), [(CuI)2(mbbm)2]n (2), [{Cu2(μ-I)2-(ebbm)2}·2MeCN]n (3), and [Cu2(μ-I)2(prbbm)2]n (4), were prepared from solvothermal reactions of CuI with three flexible ligands [(bzim)(CH2)n(bzim)] (bzim = benzimidazole; n = 1, mbbm; n = 2, ebbm; n = 3, prbbm). These compounds were characterized by elemental analysis, IR and X-ray crystallography. 1 consists of cubanelike [Cu4(μ3-I)4] fragments that link the neighboring ones via mbbm bridges to form a 1D ladder-type chain. 2 contains mononuclear [CuI] fragments that are bridged by mbbm ligands to yield a 1D zigzag chain. 3 or 4 contains a [Cu2(μ-I)2] dimeric fragment, which works as a four-connecting node to link its four equivalent ones to form a 2D (4,4) network (3) or acts as a two-connecting node to connect its two equivalent ones via two pairs of prbbm bridges to form a 1D double chain (4). The photoluminescent properties of 1-4 in the solid state at ambient temperature were investigated.

A new and innovative detector system based on a silicon strip detector dedicated to the study of the reaction induced by lighter radioactive beams is described herein.The detector system consists of five sets of three types of telescopes,which are successfully used to measure the angular distributions of both elastic scattering and breakup simultaneously, on the Radioactive Ion Beam Line in Lanzhou at Heavy Ion Research Facility in Lanzhou. This silicon detector array is used to measure the elastic scattering angular distributions of ^(11) Be on a ^(208) Pb target at E_(lab) = 140 and 209 MeV. A comparison of the Monte Carlo simulations with the experimental results shows a reasonable consistency.

Considering the importance and complexity of benzene oxidation on mineral oxide aerosol surfaces in the atmosphere,gas-phase 3 d-transition metal oxide cations were used as models of active sites on mineral oxide aerosols to mimic the corresponding reactions.The various cations have been prepared by laser ablation and reacted with benzene in a linear ion trap reactor.Of the 103 systematically investigated cations,39 clusters can oxidize benzene at room temperature.In addition to the adsorption channel,other five types of reaction channels were observed,including dehydrogenation of C6H6,charge exchange,hydrogen atom transfer,oxygen atom transfer,and the formation of C6H5O^+radical,among which the first two pathways are prevale nt and the formation of C6H6O^+cations has not been reported in literature.The insight into the benzene oxidation reactions derived from the gas-phase model systems is helpful to build a detailed picture of oxidative mechanisms of C6H6 and its derivatives over corresponding mineral oxide aerosols.

When one becomes ill after consuming a meal, there is a propensity to target a particular taste as the cause of the illness. The qualities of the taste most likely targeted include more novel, less preferred, and higher protein content. This association between a particular taste and illness is a form of learning that is termed conditioned taste aversion (CTA). A consequence of the learned association is that the taste will become aversive. When experiencing the taste again, individuals will show aversive reactions such as expressions of loathing, will experience mimicked illness sensations such as nausea, and subsequently, will avoid further exposure to the taste. The ability to acquire CTA occurs across species and across ages within a species. In the rat animal model, however, age differences exist in the capability of acquiring CTAs when increasingly longer intervals are imposed between consumption of a novel sweet solution and onset of illness. Pups have a decreased ability compared to young adults while aged rats have an increased ability. Evidence suggests that the failure of pups to acquire CTA at longer intervals is due to an immature retrieval mechanism and the facili-tated ability of aged rats is due to a compromised clock mechanism that tracks the passage of time. Learned taste-illness association serves the critical function of informing individuals of the toxic nature of certain foods, thus preventing further illness and potentially death. Additionally, it contributes to the hypophagia observed during cancer chemotherapy and may contribute to the hypophagia found while suffering from bacterial infection, chronic med-ical conditions such as cancer, and restrictive food intake disorders such as anorexia nervosa.

Professor Chaozhong Li's research group has long been interested in radicals in organic synthesis. They have developed a series of silver-catalyzed radical fluorination reactions since the year 2012.[1] In 2015, the research group joined the Key Laboratory of Organofluorine Chemistry, Shanghai Institute of Organic Chemistry, Chinese Academy of Sciences. I joined the Li group in the same year.

Biobased Aromatic-Aliphatic Polyols from Cardanol by Photochemical Thiol-ene Reaction

Biobased aromatic-aliphatic polyols were previously synthesized from a thermal thiol-ene reaction of propoxylated cardanol with 2-mercaptoethanol(ME)in the presence of azobisisobutyronitrile(AIBN)as a radical initiator.Cardanol used for this purpose was obtained as a dark-brown liquid(Gardner Color Reference^18).The photochemical thiol-ene reaction can also be used to prepare aromatic-aliphatic polyols by employing cardanol.Via the photochemical thiol-ene reaction,2-mercaptoethanol was added successfully to C=C double bond of cardanol,suggesting that phenolic group may not play an inhibitory role in the radical thiol-ene reaction.However,we preferred to alkoxylate the phenolic hydroxyl group of cardanol,which is much more reactive with isocyanates than phenolic hydroxyls,to generate a new aliphatic hydroxyl group.Furthermore,the functionality of polyols was also improved by two methods:1)using 1-thio-glycerol instead of 2-mercaptoethanol and 2)using alkoxylated cardanol with glycidol(Cardanol-GLY)instead of propoxylated cardanol(Cardanol-PO).These polyols were then used in preparation of rigid polyurethane foams that can be useful in various applications such as insulation of freezers,pipes and storage tanks in food and chemical industries.

In-situ electrodeposited flower-like NiFeOxHy/rGO on nickel foam for oxygen evolution reaction

Developing cost-effective electrocatalysts for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in basic media is critical to hydrogen production from renewable energy. Herein, in-situ electrodeposited flower-like NiFeO x H y and NiFeO x H y /rGO composite electrocatalysts on Ni foam for OER are reported. The active sites of the flower-like electrocatalysts are increased significantly due to the enhanced NiFeO x H y surface areas and numerous exposed layered edges and edge defects. Reduced graphene oxide (rGO) has been introduced to fabricate NiFeO x H y /rGO composite film, further improving the conductivity and OER performance of the flower-like NiFeO x H y . The optimized NiFeO x H y /rGO exhibits superior OER performance with a Tafel slope of 29.11 mV/decade, an overpotential of 200 mV at 10 mA/cm 2 in 1 mol/L KOH and favorable long-term stability.

Recently, new low-energy modes of excitation called pygmy resonances have been observed.Their distinct feature is the close connection to nuclear skin oscillations. A successful description of the pygmy resonances could be achieved in a microscopic theoretical approach which incorporates the density functional theory and QRPA formalism extended with multi-phonon degrees of freedom. The latter is found of crucial importance for the understanding of the fine structure of nuclear electric and magnetic excitations at low energies. Corresponding microscopic multi-phonon response functions are implemented in the studies of s-process of nucleosynthesis.
