Patterns in species geographic range size are relatively well-known for vertebrates,but still poorly known for plants.Contrasts of these patterns between groups have rarely been investigated.With a detailed flora and fauna distribution database of Xinjiang,China,we used regression methods,redundancy analysis and random forests to explore the relationship of environment and body size with the geographic range size of plants,mammals and birds in Xinjiang and contrast these patterns between plants and animals.We found positive correlations between species range size and body size.The range size of plants was more influenced by water variables,while that of mammals and birds was largely influenced by temperature variables.The productivity variable,i.e.,Enhanced Vegetation Index(EVI)was far more correlated with range size than climatic variables for both plants and animals,suggesting that vegetation productivity inferred from remote sensing data may be a good predictor of species range size for both plants and animals.

Does regional species diversity resist biotic invasions?

The role of regional species diversity in large-scale species invasions has been largely controversial.On the one hand,it has been proposed that diversity may facilitate invasion(“diversity begets diversity”)because regions with higher diversity may indicate favorable conditions for many more species.On the other hand,high diversity may indicate high levels of niche occupation,thus making it more difficult for new species to invade.In the past,invasion biologists have evaluated how regional native and exotic richness are related.Here,we test whether the range size of exotic species may be constrained by regional native richness using plant data from three continental regions in the Northern Hemisphere,i.e.,Europe,Eastern Asia,and North America.We found that regional native plant diversity is inversely related to the range size of exotic species.This result may be due to stronger species interactions such as competition in species-rich habitats that limit the establishment and spread of exotic species.

Biological and extrinsic correlates of extinction risk in Chinese lizards

China is a country with one of the most species-rich reptile faunas in the world.However,nearly a quarter of Chinese lizard species assessed by the China Biodiversity Red List are threatened.Nevertheless,to date,no study has explicitly examined the pattern and processes of extinction and threat in Chinese lizards.In this study,we conducted the first comparative phylogenetic analysis of extinction risk in Chinese lizards.We addressed the following 3 questions:(1)What is the pattern of extinction and threat in Chinese lizards?(2)Which species traits and extrinsic factors are related to their extinction risk?(3)How can we protect Chinese lizards based on our results?We collected data on 10 species traits(body size[BS],clutch size,geographic range size,activity time,reproductive mode,habitat specialization[HS],habitat use,leg development,maximum elevation,and elevation range)and 7 extrinsic factors(mean annual precipitation(MAP),mean annual temperature,mean annual solar insolation,normalized difference vegetation index(NDVI),human footprint,human population density,and human exploitation).After phylogenetic correction,these variables were used separately and in combination to assess their associations with extinction risk.We found that Chinese lizards with a small geographic range,large BS,high HS,and living in high MAP areas were vulnerable to extinction.Conservation priority should thus be given to species with the above extinction-prone traits so as to effectively protect Chinese lizards.Preventing future habitat destruction should also be a primary focus of management efforts because species with small range size and high HS are particularly vulnerable to habitat loss.
