Northwestward range expansion of the bumblebee Bombus haematurus into Central Europe is associated with warmer winters and niche conservatism

Species range expansions are crucial for understanding niche formation and the interaction with the ***,we studied the bumblebee Bombus haematurus Kriechbaumer,1870,a species historically distributed from northern Serbia through northern Iran which has very recently started expanding northwestward into Central Europe without human-mediated dispersal(i.e.,it is a natural spread).After updating the global distribution of this species,we investigated if niche shifts took place during this range expansion between newly colonized and historical *** addition,we have explored which climatic factors may have favored the natural range expansion of the *** results indicated that Bombus haematurus has colonized large territories in 7 European countries outside the historical area in the period from the 1980s to 2018,a natural expansion over an area that equals 20%of the historical *** addition,this bumblebee performs generalism in flower visitation and it occurs in different habitats,although a preference for forested areas clearly *** land-use associated with the species in the colonized areas is similar to the historical distribution,indicating that no major niche shifts occurred during the ***,in recently colonized localities,the range expansion was associated with warming temperatures during the winter and also during both queen overwintering and emergence *** findings document a case of natural range expansion due to environmental change rather than due to niche shifts,and specifically they suggest that warmer winters could be linked to the process of natural colonization of new areas.

Repeated range expansion and Glacial Endurance of Potentilla glabra(Rosaceae) in the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau

To date, little is still known about how alpine species occurring in the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau （QTP） responded to past climatic oscillations. Here, by using variations of the chloroplast trnT-L, we examined the genetic distribution pattern of 101 individuals of Potentilla glabra, comprising both the interior QTP and the plateau edge. Phylogenetic and network analyses of 31 recovered haplotypes identified three tentative clades （A, B and C）. Analysis of molecular variance （AMOVA） revealed that most of the genetic variability was found within populations （0.693）, while differentiations between populations were obviously distinct （Fst -- 0.307）. Two independent range expansions within clades A and B occurring at approximately 316 and 201 thousand years ago （kya） were recovered from the hierarchical mismatch analysis, and these two expansions were also confirmed by Fu＇s Fs values and ＇g＇ tests. However, distant distributions of clade C and private haplotypes from clades A and B suggest that they had survived the Last Glacial Maximum （LGM） and previous glaciers in situ since their origins. Our findings based on available limited samples support that multiple refugia of a few cold-enduring species had been maintained in the QTP platform during LGM and/or previous glacial stages.

Performance analysis for range expansion in heterogeneous networks

Whether introduced into a completely novel habitat or slowly expanding their current range,the degree to which animals can effciently explore and navigate new environments can be key to survival,ultimately determining population establishment and colonization *** tested whether spatial orientation and exploratory behavior are associated with non-native spread in free-living bank voles(Myodes glareolus,N=43)from a population accidentally introduced to Ireland a century *** measured spatial orientation and navigation in a radial arm maze,and behaviors associated to exploratory tendencies and risk-taking in repeated open-feld tests,at the expansion edge and in the source *** voles at the expansion edge re-visited unrewarded arms of the maze more,waited longer before leaving it,took longer to start exploring both the radial arm maze and the open feld,and were more risk-averse compared to conspecifcs in the source *** together,results suggest that for this small mammal under heavy predation pressure,a careful and thorough exploration strategy might be favored when expanding into novel environments.

Assisted migration has been proposed as a strategy for adaptive management of forest species in response to expected effects of climate change,but it is controversial for several *** dry forests are among the most threatened ecosystems in the *** Mexico,historically,land-use change and deforestation have been decreasing forest cover,and climate change is shifting the potential distribution of different forest types,exacerbating the risk of local *** altitudinal migration could be a feasible strategy for reducing local extinctions in response to climate change and lack of landscape *** objective was to evaluate survival and growth of Albizia plurijuga and Ceiba aesculifolia,two tropical deciduous forests species in *** transplanted 4-month-old seedlings to experimental raised beds at three altitudes(2100,2400 and 2700 m a.s.l.),exceeding their upper regional limit of distribution(2000 m a.s.l.).We also tested seed germination at each *** monitored the experiment for 10 *** both species,as altitude increased and cold weather was more prevalent,plant performance *** species,differences in individual growth were significant among *** survival was 18.5%for *** and 24.5%for *** species had higher survival and better growth at lower altitude,and no seedling emergence at any *** conclude that assisted migration can be implemented for each species by an upward attitudinal shift within,and not exceeding,400 m beyond their present upper altitudinal limit of *** results indicate that for many species that show altitudinal gradients at regional scales,unless current climate conditions change,the potential to establish outside their range is minimal.

Demographic Processes Linked to Genetic Diversity and Positive Selection across a Species’ range

Demography determines the strength of genetic drift,which generally reduces genetic variation and the efficacy of ***,we disentangled the importance of demographic processes at a local scale(census size and mating system)and at a species-range scale(old split between population clusters,recolonization after the last glaciation cycle,and admixture)in determining within-population genomic diversity and genomic signatures of positive *** were based on re-sequence data from 52 populations of North American Arabidopsis lyrata collected across its entire *** mating system and range dynamics since the last glaciation cycle explained around 60%of the variation in genomic diversity among populations and 52%of the variation in the signature of positive *** was lowest in selfing compared with outcrossing populations and in areas further away from glacial *** parallel,reduced positive selectionwas found in selfing populations and in populations with a longer route of postglacial range *** signature of positive selection was also reduced in populations without *** conclude that recent range expansion can have a profound influence on diversity in coding and non-coding DNA,similar in magnitude to the shift toward *** limits may in fact be caused by reduced effective population size and compromised positive selection in recently colonized parts of the range.

Palaeo-biome reconstructions have inferred that the subtropical evergreen broadleaved forests（EBLFs） in East Asia contracted to a narrow belt south of 24°N during the Last Glacial Maximum（LGM）,whereas various phylogeographical studies of subtropical plants have inferred glacial refugia north of this ***,we aim to elucidate the historical dynamics of EBLFs during the Quaternary,using Lindera aggregata as a *** history of *** were investigated based on 19 sampled populations using four chloroplast DNA（cpDNA） fragments,15 low-copy nuclear genes（LCGs） and ecological niche *** observed a shallow and star-like cpDNA network with one dominant *** time to the most recent common ancestor（TMRCA） was estimated to be 1.78 Myr by secondary calibrations using four calibration *** LCGs revealed three distinct genetic clusters that reflected contrasting historical population *** most ancient cluster was located south of the Nanling and Wuyi Mountain belts and experienced long-term in-situ *** area further north was occupied by two disjunct clusters that dated back to the LGM and showed signatures of a rapid northward *** detected pollen-mediated secondary admixture between all three clusters including somewhat preferential southward gene *** study fully supports and further refines the emerging view that many EBLF taxa could maintain populations in southern subtropical China during the LGM but not further *** evidence suggests a marked latitudinal gradient in the historical conservation and postglacial re-establishment of EBLFs,which would have benefitted from local sources in the south while depending more strongly on longdistance colonisation further north.
