Analysis of runoff in Ungauged Mountain Watersheds in Sichuan,China using Kinematic-wave-based GIUH Model

Floods are one of the most common natural hazards occurring all around the ***,the knowledge of the origins of a food and its possible magnitude in a given region remains unclear *** lack of understanding is particularly acute in mountainous regions with large degrees in Sichuan Province,China,where runoff is seldom *** nature of streamflow in a region is related to the time and spatial distribution of rainfall quantity and watershed *** geomorphologic characteristics are the channel network and surrounding landscape which transform the rainfall input into an output hydrograph at the outlet of the *** the given geomorphologic properties of the watershed,theoretically the hydrological response function can be determined hydraulically without using any recorded data of past rainfall or runoff *** this study,a kinematic-wave-based geomorphologic instantaneous unit hydrograph (KW-GIUH) model was adopted and verified to estimate runoff in ungauged *** mountain watersheds,the Yingjing River watershed and Tianquan River watershed in Sichuan were selected as study *** geomorphologic factors of the two watersheds were obtained by using a digital elevation model (DEM) based on the topographic database obtained from the Shuttle Radar Topography Mission of US's *** tests of the model on the two watersheds were performed both at gauged and ungauged *** between the simulated and observed hydrographs for a number of rainstorms at the gauged sites indicated the potential of the KW-GIUH model as a useful tool for runoff analysis in these ***,to simulate possible concentrated rainstorms that could result in serious flooding in these areas,synthetic rainfall hyetographs were adopted as input to the KW-GIUH model to obtain the flow hydrographs at two ungauged sites for different return period *** analysis can be performed in the future to select the optimum design retu

Evaluating the Performance of HEC-HMS and SWAT Hydrological Models in Simulating the rainfall-runoff Process for Data Scarce Region of Ethiopian Rift Valley Lake Basin

A number of physically-based and distributed watershed models have been developed to model the hydrology of the watershed. For a specific watershed, selecting the most suitable hydrological model is necessary to obtain good simulated results. In this study, two hydrologic models, Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) and Hydrological Engineering Centre-The Hydrologic Modeling System (HEC-HMS), were applied to predict streamflow in Katar River basin, Ethiopia. The performances of these two models were compared in order to select the right model for the study basin. Both models were calibrated and validated with stream flow data of 11 years (1990-2000) and 7 years (2001-2007) respectively. Nash-Sutcliffe Error (NSE) and Coefficient of Determination (R2) were used to evaluate efficiency of the models. The results of calibration and validation indicated that, for river basin Katar, both models could simulate fairly well the streamflow. SWAT gave the model performance with the R2 > 0.78 and NSE > 0.67;and the HEC-HMS model provided the model performance with the R2 > 0.87 and NSE > 0.73. Hence, the simulated streamflow given by the HEC-HMS model is more satisfactory than that provided by the SWAT model.

＜正＞Frequent floods are well known in the Yangtze basin for which the Three Gorges reservoir is constructing. However in recent year, it was impressed that more floods had happened in the downstream of Three Gorges reservoir, and frequent droughts occurred in the upstream. This may impact on the future operation of reservoir. For better understand- ing the spatial and temporal variation of runoff in the upper Yangtze basin during the past 40- years, this paper carried out a hydro-climate data analysis together with the rainfall-runoff modeling. Results showed that both precipitation and discharge along the downstream of dam had statistically significant increasing trends in summer. But the upstream had signifi- cant decreasing trends for hoth precipitation and discharge in autumn. For revealing details in the spatial-temporal variation of runoff in the upper Yangtze basin, a geomorphology- based distributed hydrological model was used for simulating the natural runoff during 1961～2000. It was found river discharge increased in summer and decreased greatly in autumn. This implies an increasing flood risk in summer and water shortage in autumn
