This study sets the objective to involve undergraduate students in the evaluation of radiologic sciences and medical imaging technology programmes in Sudanese universities. Based on the analysis of survey results in which the participants (BSc students undertaking radiologic sciences and medical imaging technology programmes at university level) are asked to answer both closed and open-ended questions, the study seeks to reveal the participants’ perceptions and introspections about the radiologic sciences and medical imaging technology programmes in Sudan. It also attempts to explore the participants’ suggestions and recommendations as to enhance the quality of these programmes with an eye to helping syllabus designers to improve these programmes, thereby bettering healthcare services for the larger good to the community. A brief cross-sectional survey is completed by a total of 105 radiologic sciences and medical imaging technology students, i.e. 39 (37.1%) third-year students and 66 (62.9%) fourth-year students. The majority of participants is satisfied with the programmes, indicating that they are up-to-date and ran abreast with the latest developments in the field. Very few suggest that the programmes should be reviewed for revision, implying that there is room for improvement. Some participants recommend that more training hours in modern imaging modalities (e.g. MRI, CT and U/S) should be introduced. Only one participant recommends the introduction of advanced training centres.

A modified technique for tibial bone sparing in unicompartmental knee arthroplasty

Background:Previously,the authors modified the surgical technique to preserve tibial bone mass for Oxford unicompartmental knee arthroplasty(UKA).The purpose of this study was to determine the clinical outcomes and values of this modified ***:Clinical data of 34 consecutive patients who underwent the unilateral modified UKA technique(modified group,34 knees)were retrospectively *** compare the outcome,a match-paired control group(conventional group,34 knees)of an equal number of patients using the conventional technique system in the same period were selected and matched with respect to diagnosis,age,pre-operative range of motion(ROM),and radiological grade of knee *** outcomes including knee Hospital for Special Surgery(HSS)score,ROM,and complications were compared between the two ***-operative radiographic assessments included hip-knee-ankle angle(HKA),joint line change,implant position,and ***:The mean follow-up time was 38.2±6.3 *** was no difference in baseline between the two *** amount of proximal tibial bone cut in the modified group was significantly less than that of the conventional group(4.7±1.1 mm vs.6.7±1.3 mm,t=6.45,P<0.001).Joint line was elevated by 2.1±1.0 mm in the modified group compared with-0.5±1.7 mm in the conventional group(t=-7.46,P<0.001).No significant differences were observed between the two groups after UKA with respect to HSS score,VAS score,ROM,and ***,the accuracy of the post-operative implant position and alignment was similar in both *** for implant size,the tibial implant size in the modified group was larger than that in the conventional group(x^2=4.95,P=0.035).Conclusions:The modified technique for tibial bone sparing was comparable with the conventional technique in terms of clinical outcomes and radiographic *** can preserve tibial bone mass and achieve a larger cement surface on the tibial side.

Gallbladder cancer is the most common malignant tumor of the biliary tract and often diagnosed incidentally during laparoscopic cholecystectomy for gallbladder disease. This underscores the importance of considering the diagnosis of gallbladder cancer when confronted with atypical findings and understanding cancer management guidelines that may impact patient outcome. Potentially curable early stage gallbladder lesions are often missed during preoperative workup and discovered incidentally during difficult cholecystectomy or afterwards on pathologic diagnosis. We will review current strategies to diagnose early stage disease and discuss clinical management issues to optimize the outcome of patients with gallbladder cancer.

Objectives: The aim is to evaluate contrast enhancement and density distribution in non-ECG-synchronized high-pitch aortoiliacal CT-angiography. Methods: 84 patients underwent clinically indicated thoracoabdominal CTA between February 2011 and May 2012 using high-pitch technique for arterial phase and an individually tailored contrast-media protocol depending on weight-class and scan duration. Standardized measurement of intravascular density is performed and accessed by multi plane reformations (MPR) orthogradly to vessels centerline. Results for 1.5 cm slices are statistically evaluated on per slice, per vessel segment ascending aortic, aortic arch, descending and abdominal aorta, right and left iliacal artery (common and external) and per patient level, regarding left-ventricular function and renal impairment. Results: In mean 53.1 ± 7.4 ml contrast-medium is administered for aortoiliacal examination. 4841 slices with mean density 280.0 ± 63 HU are analyzed. In 84.2% (n = 4074), diagnostic quality is delivered. Regarding vessel segments, mean enhancement scored ≥ 255.5 except weight-class 5. Adjusted to homogeneity of bolus by excluding examinations with failed bolus triggering (14%), weight-class 1 to 3 provides 100% to 75% entirely diagnostic datasets, where amount is inadequate in weight-classes 4 (62%) and 5 (2%). Conclusions: CM protocol produces moderate but diagnostic vessel enhancement with little CM (mean = 50.7 ± 6 ml) in patients smaller than 86 kg (weight-class 1 to 3) independently to left ventricular or renal function. Failure rate requires precise bolus triggering.

The management of rheumatoid arthritis(RA) in the past three decades has undergone a paradigm shift from symptomatic relief to a "treat-to-target" approach. This has been possible through use of various conventional and biologic disease modifying anti-rheumatic drugs(DMARDs) which target disease pathogenesis at a molecular level. Cost and infection risk preclude regular use of biologics in resource-constrained settings. In therecent years, evidence has emerged that combination therapy with conventional DMARDs is not inferior to biologics in the management of RA and is a feasible cost-effective option.
