The Battle over Confucius and Classical Chinese Philosophy in European Early enlightenment Thought （1670-1730）

A profound split is evident during the period 1670-1730 in the way European scholars and commentators attempted to understand and describe classical Chinese thought. For some, Confucianism acknowledged divine creation and divine governance of the world, immortality of the soul and other elements of Natural Theology. The radical enlightenment thinkers, however, and also some Christian scholars denied that Confucianism was based on Natural Theology or pervaded by belief in divine providence, characterizing it rather as monist, naturalist and Spinozist. The disagreement proved fundamental in several respects and proved divisive for the Church, as well as European thought more generally, producing a series of lively disputes that continued over several decades.

The Spread of Deism in the Reformed Church in the South Eastern Region of the Kingdom of Hungary at the Turn of the 18th- 19th Century

Deism is one of the branches of radical enlightenment which states that God creates the World, but he does not intervene into its operation. Theological dogmas are completely useless because these rules are not necessary for the prosperity of people. These ideas were very dangerous to Christianity; however, they were widespread in many parts of Europe in the 18th century. The Reformed Diocese of Bekes was located in the south eastern area of the Kingdom of Hungary, whose followers practised an essentially rural way of life; therefore, they hardly read any scientific and philosophical works. In spite of this fact, the spread of the ideas characteristic of deism can be observed in numerous dioceses. The reception of deism in southeast Hungary can be witnessed not in the traditional intellectual documents （school curriculum, translations, and philosophical treatises）, but in the documents of the ecclesiastical government： Church attendance records, documents of the proceedings of the ecclesiastical courts. With the detailed analysis of the ecclesiastical administration documents of the Reformed Church, this study investigates how folk religion relates to deism and the criticism of religion by the radical enlightenment.

现代性与传统之间存在着错综复杂的关系。传统既是现代性的产物，又与现代性相对峙。激进化启蒙片面强调现代性与传统的对立，通过把传统置于理性对面而否认传统的价值。实际上，现代性与传统之间存在着辩证的互动关系，传统的结构性内容在现代性中既被消解又被重建，而现代性的秩序则充斥着不断进入时间意识的传统流传物。因此，传统需要现代性，现代性也需要传统。呵护传统和现代性之间互补式默契关系的良方是，摆脱启蒙自负心态，回到有限思维的界线意识上来。一个负责任的知识分子不仅知道自己使用理性的正当范围和界限，也懂得敬畏传统和习俗。惟其如此，现代与传统才能各安其位，交往互动，相映生辉，表现为思想对同一世界的不同对待。
