Physical exercise and COVID-19 pandemic in PubMed:Two months of dynamics and one year of original scientific production

Our aim was to conduct a narrative review about physical exercise and Corona Virus Disease 2019(COVID-19).A literature search was completed crossing the keywords“COVID-19”and“physical exercise”,for a narrative re-view,and physical activity(PA),physical exercise,physical training,sport,physical fitness,for a systematic re-view;search strategy(Randomized Controlled Trial,in the last 1 year,English).The first search date was closed on 04/26/2020 and 06/26/2020.This strategy was chosen to assess the dynamics of scientific information production for the pandemic.In two months,an increase of 76%,from 12(19.4%)to 50(80.64%)COVID-19 articles(n=62,100%)was found.The main types of articles published were editorial articles(16.13%,n=10 of 62 articles)and commentary(9.68%,n=6 of 62 articles).The most frequent country of origin of the scientific production was the United States(12.90%,n=8 of 62 articles),the United Kingdom(12.90%,n=8 of 62 arti-cles),and Brazil(11.29%,n=7 of 62 articles).However,in 2020,there were only 2 relevant randomized controlled trials on the COVID-19 topic in the context of physical exercise.Scientific information production shows the concern of the PA science community to bring a solution to the increase in physical inactivity generated by the COVID-19 pandemic.Our findings show the dynamics of scientific production on the COVID-19,in a situation so unique such as a pandemic,denotes that the practice of PA is essential to improve and/or maintain physical and mental health.

Response of Solenopsis invicta （Hymenoptera： Formicidae） to potassium oleate water solution

In contrast to floating on the surface of distilled water, ants were immediately submerged after being placed in the potassium oleate （PO） water solution, which led to immobilization within minutes. However, some workers survived after being immersed in 0.03% PO water solution at 25℃ for up to 640 rnin. Elevated temperature of the PO water solution is needed to kill ants within a shorter time frame. At 50℃ and 0.13% PO concentration, total mortality was achieved with 10-min immersion for all ants, including brood and adult ants. Soil has a negative effect on the effectiveness of potassium oleate; however, such negative effect can be overcome by increasing either treatment temperature or duration of the treatment. In addition to immobilizing and lethal effect, PO repels ants. PO may have the potential to be incorporated into immersion treatment for the quarantine of imported fire ants to reduce the use of synthetic contact insecticides.

Why is it difficult to accurately predict the COVID-19 epidemic?

Since the COVID-19 outbreak in Wuhan City in December of 2019,numerous model predictions on the COVID-19 epidemics in Wuhan and other parts of China have been reported.These model predictions have shown a wide range of variations.In our study,we demonstrate that nonidentifiability in model calibrations using the confirmed-case data is the main reason for such wide variations.Using the Akaike Information Criterion(AIC)for model selection,we show that an SIR model performs much better than an SEIR model in representing the information contained in the confirmed-case data.This indicates that predictions using more complex models may not be more reliable compared to using a simpler model.We present our model predictions for the COVID-19 epidemic in Wuhan after the lockdown and quarantine of the city on January 23,2020.We also report our results of modeling the impacts of the strict quarantine measures undertaken in the city after February 7 on the time course of the epidemic,and modeling the potential of a second outbreak after the return-to-work in the city.

At the beginning of a COVID-19 infection,there is a period of time known as the exposed or latency period,before an infected person is capable of transmitting the infection to another person.We develop two differential equations models to account for this period.The first is a model that incorporates infected persons in the exposed class,before transmission is possible.The second is a model that incorporates a time delay in infected persons,before transmission is possible.We apply both models to the COVID-19 epidemic in China.We estimate the epidemiological parameters in the models,such as the transmission rate and the basic reproductive number,using data of reported cases.We thus evaluate the role of the exposed or latency period in the dynamics of a COVID-19 epidemic.

Mophological and Molecular Identification of Potato Cyst Nematode from Sichuan,China

[Objectives]The infection symptoms of cyst nematodes were found in Yuexi, Sichuan. In order to identify the pathogen, the isolated nematodes were identified by morphology and molecular biology. [Methods] The potato roots and soil around the roots were collected, the nematodes in the roots were stained and observed, and the cysts were separated by the simple floating method. The second-stage juveniles(J2 s), females and cysts were found, and they were photographed and morphologically measured. The DNA of cysts and J2 s were extracted and identified by species-specific PCR. The DNA sequences of 18 S gene, 28 S D2-D3 region and ITS region in ribosomal DNA were obtained. Sequences of some cyst nematode species were downloaded from GenBank for sequence alignment, and MrBayes 3.2.3 software was used to construct a Bayesian phylogenetic tree. [Results] The nematodes could invade hosts’ root system. The basal knobs of J2 s was nearly round and inclined backward;the average length of the stylet was shorter than 23 μm;the Granek ratio of cysts was greater than or equal to 3, which is highly consistent with that of Globodera rostochiensis. The DNA templates of three cysts and four J2 s were amplified by species-specific PCR, and a band of about 430 bp was obtained. After further sequencing, the length was 434 bp, which is consistent with G. rostochiensis. The evolutionary analysis of rDNA 18 S and 28 S showed that the cyst nematode population was a Globodera species, and further evolutionary analysis of ITS gene confirmed that the population was G. rostochiensis. [Conclusions] The nematodes are G. rostochiensis, which is a quarantine species of great concern to both domestic and import quarantine. Once introduced and colonized, it is hard to eradicate. Clarifying predictions for COVID-19 from testing data: The example of New York State

With the spread of COVID-19 across the world,a large amount of data on reported cases has become available.We are studying here a potential bias induced by the daily number of tests which may be insufficient or vary over time.Indeed,tests are hard to produce at the early stage of the epidemic and can therefore be a limiting factor in the detection of cases.Such a limitation may have a strong impact on the reported cases data.Indeed,some cases may be missing from the official count because the number of tests was not sufficient on a given day.In this work,we propose a new differential equation epidemic model which uses the daily number of tests as an input.We obtain a good agreement between the model simulations and the reported cases data coming from the state of New York.We also explore the relationship between the dynamic of the number of tests and the dynamics of the cases.We obtain a good match between the data and the outcome of the model.Finally,by multiplying the number of tests by 2,5,10,and 100 we explore the consequences for the number of reported cases.

Associations between sociodemographic factors and physical activity and sedentary behaviors in adults with chronic diseases during COVID-19 pandemic

The pandemic of the new coronavirus(COVID-19)may be affecting the physical activity(PA)level in much of the population.This study aimed to investigate the prevalence of physical inactivity and sedentary behavior(SB)among adults with chronic diseases and their associations with sociodemographic factors during the COVID-19 pandemic.This cross-sectional study included 249 participants(age:18-91 years;61.4%female)with chronic conditions and attended the Family Health Strategy program in a small town in Brazil.Data were collected between 2020-07-13 and 2020-07-24 by face-to-face interviews.Self-reported PA,sitting time,chronic diseases,medication use,sociodemographic data,and self-isolation adherence were obtained by questionnaire.During this specific time point of the COVID-19 pandemic,71.5%of participants did not meet the PA recommendations(≥500 METs-min/week),and the prevalence of SB risk(≥4 h sitting)was 62.7%.Adjusted logistic regression indicated that male participants(odds ratio[OR]:1.89[95%CI 1.02-3.53]),living alone(OR:2.92[95%CI 1.03-8.30])or in a two-person household(OR:2.32[95%CI 1.16-4.63]),and those who reported sometimes performing self-isolation(OR:3.07[95%CI 1.47-6.40])were more likely to meet the minimum PA recommendations.Current smokers had a lower odds(OR:0.36[95%CI 0.14-0.95])of meeting the PA recommendations.Older participants(OR:2.18[95%CI 1.06-4.50])and those who had multimorbidity(OR:1.92[95%CI 1.07-3.44])were more likely to have a higher degree of SB.There is an urgent need to mitigate physical inactivity and SB,and public health interventions must take into account sociodemographic status.

Mathematical modeling of contact tracing as a control strategy of Ebola virus disease

More than 20outbreaks of Ebola virus disease have occurred in Africa since 1976,and yet no adequate treatment is available.Hence,prevention,control measures and supportive treatment remain the only means to avoid the disease.Among these measures,contact tracing occupies a prominent place.In this paper,we propose a simple mathematical model that incorporates imperfect contact tracing,quarantine and hospitalization (or isolation).The control reproduction number Rc of each sub-model and for the full model are computed.Theoretically,we prove that when Tic is less than one,the corresponding model has a unique globally asymptotically stable disease-free equilibrium.Conversely, when Rc is greater than one,the disease-free equilibrium becomes unstable and a unique globally asymptotically stable endemic equilibrium arises.Furthermore,we numerically support the analytical results and assess the efficiency of different control strategies.Our main observation is that,to eradicate EVD,the combination of high contact tracing (up to 90%)and effective isolation is better than all other control measures,namely:(1) perfect contact tracing,(2)effective isolation or full hospitalization,(3)combination of medium contact tracing and medium isolation.

What are the common anthracnose pathogens of tropical fruits?

t Species of Colletotrichum are associated with anthracnose of a wide range of host plants including cultivated and wild tropical fruits.The genetic and ecological diversity of species associated with wild fruits are poorly explored,as compared to those associated with pre and postharvest diseases of cultivated fruits.In the present study,isolates of Colletotrichum were obtained from commercially available cultivated fruits,wild fruits(from native trees in natural habitats)and a few herbaceous hosts collected in northern Thailand.These isolates were initially characterized based on analysis of complete sequences of nuclear ribosomal internal transcribed spacer(ITS),into the genetically defined species complexes of Colletotrichum gloeosporioides,C.acutatum,C.boninense and C.truncatum.The isolates were primarily identified in the C.gloeosporioides species complex,based on a strongly supported clade within the ITS gene tree and were further characterized using multi-gene phylogenetic analyses and morphology.Phylogenetic analyses of ITS,partial sequences of actin(ACT),calmodulin(CAL),glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase(GAPDH),glutamine synthetase(GS)andβtubulin(TUB2)genetic markers were performed individually and in combination.Colletotrichum gloeosporioides sensu stricto was identified from lime(Citrus aurantifolia)and rose apple(Syzygium samarangense).Colletotrichum fructicola was isolated from dragon fruit(Hylocerous undatus)and jujube(Ziziphus sp.).Colletotrichum endophytica was found only from an unknown wild fruit.We observed a considerable genetic and host diversity of species occurring on tropical fruits within the clade previously known as Colletotrichum siamense sensu lato.The clade consists of isolates identified as pre and postharvest pathogens on a wide range of fruits,including coffee(Coffea arabica),custard apple(Annona reticulata),Cerbera sp.,figs(Ficus racemosa)mango(Mangifera indica),neem(Azadirachta indica)and papaya(Carica papaya)and was the dominant group of species among most wild fruits st

Phyllosticta capitalensis is an endophyte and weak plant pathogen with a worldwide distribution presently known from 70 plant families.This study isolated P.capitalensis from different host plants in northern Thailand,and determined their different life modes.Thirty strains of P.capitalensis were isolated as endophytes from 20 hosts.An additional 30 strains of P.capitalensis from other hosts and geographic locations were also obtained from established culture collections.Phylogenetic analysis using ITS,ACTand TEF gene data confirmed the identity of all isolates.Pathogenicity tests with five strains of P.capitalensis originating from different hosts were completed on their respective host plants.In all cases there was no infection of healthy leaves,indicating that this endophyte does not cause disease on healthy,unstressed host plants.That P.capitalensis is often isolated as an endophyte has important implications in fungal biology and plant health.Due to its endophytic nature,P.capitalensisis commonly found associated with lesions of plants,and often incorrectly identified as a species of quarantine importance,which again has implications for trade in agricultural and forestry production.
