Socio-economic and psychosocial Determinants of Smoking and Passive Smoking in Older Adults

Objective To determine the associations of socio-economic and psychosocial factors with active and passive smoking in older adults. Methods Using a standard interview method, we examined random samples of 6071 people aged 〉 60 years in 5 provinces of China during 2007-2009. Results World age-standardised prevalence for current and former smoking in men was 45.6% and 20.5%, and in women 11.1% and 4.5%. Current smoking reduced with older age but increased with men, low socioeconomic status （SES）, alcohol drinking, being never-married, pessimistic and depressive syndromes. Former smoking was associated with men, secondary school education, a middle-high income, being a businessman, being widowed, less frequencies of visiting children/relatives and friends, and worrying about children. Among 3774 never-smokers, the prevalence of passive smoking was 31.5%, and the risk increased with women, low SES, alcohol drinking, being married, having a religious believe, and daily visiting children/relatives. There were sex differences in the associations, and an interaction effect of education and income on smoking and passive smoking. Conclusion Older Chinese had a higher level of smoking and passive smoking than those in high income countries, reflecting China＇s failures in controlling smoking. The associations with low SES and different psychosocial aspects and sex differences suggest preventative strategies for active and passive smoking.

Mental health interventions following disasters have been criticized as individualistic, incomplete, and culturally insensitive. This article showcases the effects of a culturally relevant and sustainable psychosocial capacitybuilding project at the epicenter of the 2008 Wenchuan Earthquake. Specifically, the project focuses on women, a group that has received limited attention in post-disaster recovery in China. This qualitative research study(N = 14)sheds light on the characteristics and processes of the implementation of a post-disaster psychosocial intervention project in rural China. In addition, by adopting the Success Case Method as an evaluation approach, this study elucidates its effects on the psychological and social changes of the disaster victims. The findings capture five aspects of psychosocial changes: enriched daily life, better mood,enhanced self-confidence, increased willingness to socialize, and the provision of mutual help. This study hopes to encourage more culturally relevant and empowering practices for women in building their psychosocial capacity after disasters.

Background and Objective: The presence of pain in cancer patients is a prevalent concomitant symptom, exerting significant impacts on their physical, psychological, and social functioning. However, the psychological and social aspects are often overlooked. This study aims to explore the factors influencing the provision of psychological and social support for patients experiencing cancer-related pain while proposing intervention measures to enhance treatment compliance, confidence levels, and overall quality of life. Materials and Methods: According to the inclusion and exclusion criteria, a total of 108 patients with moderate to severe advanced cancer pain who had received outpatient analgesia treatment for at least one month were selected as the study subjects. The psychological characteristics and social support of these patients were further examined using the Self-Rating Symptom Scale (SCL-90) and Social Support Rating Scale (SSRS). The influencing factors were compared with the national norms. Results: The total score of SCL-90 was significantly different from that of the domestic norm (P psychosocial interventions to address negative emotions and enhance social support. By bolstering patient confidence through these measures, we can ultimately improve treatment outcomes and enhance patients’ overall quality of life.

Relations of change in fruit and vegetable intake with overall energy reduction and physical activity with weight change:Assessing theory-based psychosocial mediators

Background'.Increased physical activity and fruit and vegetable(FV)intake are typically suggested to counter *** behavior change in those areas has,however,been poor,possibly because of a lack of understanding of the effects of psychosocial *** data from previous research,this study aimed to better define the role of physical activity and FV intake in short;and long-term weight loss via changes in malleable psychosocial mediators and ***:Women who were obese(n=183;age=50.0±7.9 years;body mass index=35.2±3.2 kg/m2,mean±SD)and who previously participated in 3 different community-based behavioral weight-loss treatments were assessed over 2 *** in FV intake,physical activity,sei^regulation of physical activity and eating(aggregated),negative mood,and weight were measured over 6 and 24 ***'.Changes in each variable over both 6 and 24 months were significant(all p values<0.001).The FV intake to the weight-related caloric intake relationship(β=.0.30,p<0.001)was significantly mediated by selfregulation change over 6 *** physical activity to weightchange relationship(β=.0.46,p<0.001)was significantly mediated by both sei±regulation and mood change over 24 *** activity,itself,accounted for only 16%of weight-related caloric expenditure *** in physical activity and FV intake were each independent predictors of weight change over 24 months(overall R2=0.50,p<0.001).Conclusion-.Findings clarified theory-based targets for weight-management treatments and suggested that future weight-loss treatments strongly focus on developing self-regulatory skills to address barriers to behavioral changes.

Perceived psychosocial health and its sociodemographic correlates in times of the COVlD-19 pandemic: a community-based online study in China

Background:Coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19)pandemic has been affecting people's psychosocial health and well-being through various complex *** present study aims to investigate the perceived psychosocial health and its sociodemographic correlates among Chinese community-dwelling ***:This cross-sectional survey was carried out online and using a structured questionnaire during April *** total,4788 men and women with the age range of 11-98 years from eight provinces in eastern,central and western China were included in the *** adopted a tactical approach to capture three key domains of perceived psychosocial health that are more likely to occur during a pandemic including hopelessness,loneliness,and *** regression method,binary logistic regression model and variance inflation factor(VIF)were used to conduct data ***:Respectively 34.8%,32.5%and 44.8%of the participants expressed feeling more hopeless,lonely,and depressed during the *** percentage of all three indicators was comparatively higher among women than among men:hopelessness(50.7%vs 49.3%),loneliness(52.4%vs 47.6%),and depression(56.2%vs 43.8%).Being married was associated with lower odds of loneliness among men(odds ratio[OR]=0.63,95%CI:0.45-0.90).Loneliness was negatively associated with smoking(OR=0.67,95%CI:0.45-0.99)and positively associated with drinking(OR=1.45,95%CI:1.04-2.02).Compared with those in the lowest income bracket(CNY 40000)had the lowest odds of reporting perceived hopelessness(OR=0.35,95%CI:0.25-0.48).Smoking also showed negative association with depression only among men(OR=0.63,95%CI:0.43-0.91).Conclusions:More than one-third of the participants reported worsening in the experience of hopelessness and loneliness,with more than two-fifth of worsening depression during the pandemic compared with

Influence of psychosocial factors on treatment of elderly Chinese patients with hypertension

Objective The aim of the study is to investigate the effects of psychosocial factors on the treatment of elderly patients with hypertension. Methods Atotalof 260 elderly Chinese patients with hypertension were treated with benazepril alone or benazepril combined with amlodipine for 8 weeks. The target blood pressure (BP) (both psychosocial factors present in both groups were assessed by the Hamilton depression scale, Hamilton anxiety scale, life event scale and social support evaluation list before and after anti-hypertensive treatment. Results There were no significant differences in gender, mean age, hist ory of hypertension, education and smoking habit, or in SBP and DBP between the groups before treatment. Significant differences were also not found in all psychosocial factors before and after treatment in the patients. However, significant differences were found between the groups with respect to post-treatment SBP and marital status. The patients with modestly controlled BP had significantly higher scores, as well as incidents, on the depressive, anxiety, and stressful life event scales than those with well-controlled BP. The patients with well-controlled BP had significantly higher scores in tangible support, subjective support, and social support compared to the patients with modestly controlled BP. Logistic regression analysis showed the independent contribution of psychosocial factors in reaching the goal of lowering BP at treatment endpoint in these hypertensive patients. Conclusions The results suggest that psychosocial factors stand as a main barrier to achieving the BP-lowering target in the management of elderly Chinese patients with hypertension.(J Geriatr Cardiol 2007;4:202-207.)

The Solution to Current psychosocial Problems and the “Unfulfilled Enlightenment” of Modernity in the New Era

The transition period of Chinese society has spawned many psychosocial problems in China,which are characterized by high incidence,universality and growth. Compared with social and economic development,the devel-opment of social psychology has been relatively slow for a long time,which has led to the prevalence of psychosocial problems and the lack of modernity cultivation in China's modernization. Xi Jinping theory on socialism with Chi-nese characteristics(SCC) in the new era is a scientific plan for the all - round development and modernization of SCC,and it contains rich ideas of modernity. It is also the ideological inheritance and innovation of Marx's "full and free development of human beings",and the basic strategy of cultivating the modernity of the new era. Therefore,it is an important way to solve the current psychosocial problems in China through the Marxist theory and the "unfulfilled enlightenment" of the theory of the new era.

Impact of psychosocial comorbidities on clinical outcomes after liver transplantation: Stratification of a high-risk population

BACKGROUND Liver transplantation is the accepted standard of care for end-stage liver disease due to a variety of etiologies including decompensated cirrhosis, fulminant hepatic failure, and primary hepatic malignancy. There are currently over 13000 candidates on the liver transplant waiting list emphasizing the importance of rigorous patient selection. There are few studies regarding the impact of additional psychosocial barriers to liver transplant including financial hardship, lack of caregiver support, polysubstance abuse, and issues with medical noncompliance. We hypothesized that patients with certain psychosocial comorbidities experienced worse outcomes after liver transplantation. AIM To assess the impact of certain pre-transplant psychosocial comorbidities on outcomes after liver transplantation. METHODS A retrospective analysis was performed on all adult patients from 2012-2016. psychosocial comorbidities including documented medical non-compliance, polysubstance abuse, financial issues, and lack of caregiver support were collected. The primary outcome assessed post-transplantation was survival. Secondary outcomes measured included graft failure, episodes of acute rejection, psychiatric decompensation, number of readmissions, presence of infection, recidivism for alcohol and other substances, and documented caregiver support *** For the primary outcome, there were no differences in survival. Patients with a history of psychiatric disease had a higher incidence of psychiatric decompensation after liver transplantation (19% vs 10%, P = 0.013). Treatment of psychiatric disorders resulted in a reduction of the incidence of psychiatric decompensation (21% vs 11%, P = 0.022). Patients with a history of polysubstance abuse in the transplant evaluation had a higher incidence of substance abuse after transplantation (5.8% vs 1.2%, P = 0.05). psychosocial Profile of HIV Patients on HAART in Southern India

BACKGROUND: Mortality of HIV/AIDS patients comes down in India after the National Aids Control Organization started providing free Antiretroviral Therapy (ART) since 2004. Madurai ART Center started providing free ART since 2004. psychosocial profile of this population explored in this study. METHODS: A cross sectional interview conducted during the year 2008 with semi structured questionnaire on HIV positive clients who are on Highly Active Anti-Retro- viral Therapy (HAART) for more than 6 months. Convenience sampling done and totally 433 clients were interviewed with informed consent. RESULTS: Three fourth (73.4%) of the clients know about ART centre through Government Hospitals or Primary Health Centre. Most of the Clients (98.6%) on ART are feels back to normal life or back to near normal life. Pill burden/ Pill fatigue perceived by clients is 4.8%.Discrimination perceived was 8.8% and mostly in their own house or by neighbors, but most of their children (99.2%) were not discriminated as per the clients. Spouse positive rate for the married clients was 61.5% and unmarried in this population was 4.6%. Major or minor psychological problems in this group were 39.7% and attempted suicide was 8.8%. Drug abuse (alcohol and smoking) while started on ART was 40.4% and the current abusers are 7.6%. CONCLUSION: This study supports effectiveness of free ART program and effective case referral from government institutions. High percentage of major or minor psychological problem warrants further exploratory study and may need psychological interventions in this population.
