Background Developmental dyslexia(DD)is a specific impairment during the acquisition of reading skills and may have a lifelong negative impact on individuals.Reliable estimates of the prevalence of DD serve as the basis for evidence-based health resource allocation and policy making.However,the prevalence of DD in primary school children varies largely across studies.Moreover,it is unclear whether there are differences in prevalence in different genders and writing systems.Hence,the present study aims to conduct a systematic review and meta-analysis to assess the global prevalence of DD and to explore related factors.Methods We will undertake a comprehensive literature search in 14 databases,including EMBASE,PubMed,Web of Science,China National Knowledge Infrastructure and Cochrane,from their inception to June 2021.Cross-sectional and longitudinal studies that describe the prevalence of DD will be eligible.The quality of the included observational studies will be assessed using the Strengthening the Reporting of Observational Studies in Epidemiology statement.The risk of bias will be determined by sensitivity analysis to identify publication bias.Results One meta-analysis will be conducted to estimate the prevalence of DD in primary school children.Heterogeneity will be assessed in terms of the properties of subjects(e.g.,gender,grade and writing system)and method of diagnosis in the included primary studies.Subgroup analyses will also be performed for population and secondary outcomes.Conclusion The results will synthesize the prevalence of DD and provide information for policy-makers and public health specialists.

In this editorial we comment on the article published in a recent issue of the World Journal of Clinical Cases.This article described a novel ultrasound-guided lateral recess block approach in treating a patient with lateral recess stenosis.The impact of spinal pain-related disability extends significantly,causing substantial human suffering and medical costs.Each county has its preferred treatment strategies for spinal pain.Here,we explore the lower back pain(LBP)treatment algorithm recommended in France.The treatment algorithm for LBP recommended by the French National Authority for Health emphasizes early patient activity and minimal medication use.It encourages the continuation of daily activities,limits excessive medication and spinal injections,and incorporates psychological assessments and non-pharmacological therapies for chronic cases.However,the algorithm may not aggressively address acute pain in the early stages,potentially delaying relief and increasing the risk of chronicity.Additionally,the recommended infiltrations primarily involve caudal epidural steroid injections,with limited consideration for other injection procedures,such as transforaminal or interlaminar epidural steroid injections.The fixed follow-up timeline may not accommodate patients who do not respond to initial treatment or experience intense pain,potentially delaying the exploration of alternative therapies.Despite these limitations,understanding the strengths and weaknesses of the French approach could inform adaptations in LBP treatment strategies globally,potentially enhancing patient outcomes and satisfaction across diverse healthcare systems.

This study aims to provide evidence regarding whether Qingufei paidu decoction(清肺排毒汤,QFPD)treatment in the acute phase shows long-term benefits for coronavirus disease 2019-associated sequelae.The 10 databases will be retrieved.Every reference list of related trials and gray literature will be searched as well.Study screening,data extraction,and risk of bias evaluation will be performed by two reviewers(CUI Hanjin and FAN Rong).Data analysis will be conducted by using STATA(version 14).Statistical heterogeneity will be explored by a standardχ2 test with a significance level of P<0.10.Funnel plots,Egger’s&Begg’s test,and Trim and Fill analysis will be used for publication bias assessment.The results of the present Meta-analysis and systematic review will be disseminated via peer-review journal publication.Ethical approval is not required,as this Meta-analysis will not contain any individual patient data.This systematic review has been registered on PROSPERO(registration number:CRD42021246937)on 15 April 2021.

An optimized Protocol for detecting guard cell specific gene expression by in situ RT-PCR in Brassica rapa

It is important to detect specific genes expressed in the guard cells,which control gas exchange and play key roles in response to drought and salt stresses.Due to the genetic transformation of Chinese cabbage(Brassica rapa)has not been well developed,in situ RT-PCR is a valuable option for detecting guard cell specific genes.We reported an optimized Protocol of in situ RT-PCR by using an FAMA homologous gene Bra001929 in Brassica rapa.FAMA in Arabidopsis has been verified to be specially expressed in guard cells.We designed specific RT-PCR primers and optimized the Protocol in terms of the(a)reverse transcription time,(b)blocking time,(c)antigen-antibody incubation time,and(d)washing temperature.Our approach provides a sensitive and effective in situ RT-PCR method for locating expression in the guard cells in Brassica rapa.Moreover,we proved the guard cell specific expression of Bra001929 in the epidermis indicating its’applicability as a marker gene for guard cells of Brassica rapa.

Effects of acupuncture in treating insomnia due to spleen-stomach disharmony syndrome and its influence on intestinal microbiome: Study Protocol for a randomized controlled trial

Background: Insomnia is a common complaint that is closely related to gastrointestinal symptoms, which is consistent with the traditional Chinese medicine classical theory of ‘‘stomach disharmony leading to restless sleep." Acupuncture is an effective complementary and alternative medicine therapy to improve gastrointestinal function and restore the normal sleep-wake cycle. However, studies on the effectiveness of acupuncture for insomnia due to spleen-stomach disharmony syndrome are limited to case reports and few randomized controlled trials; deeper research on its mechanism is still lacking. This randomized controlled trial aims to assess the treatment efficacy of ‘‘harmonizing stomach to tranquilize mind"acupuncture for insomnia and its influence on the intestinal microbiome.Methods/design: This is a randomized, single-blind, parallel-group study. Sixty eligible patients with insomnia due to spleen-stomach disharmony syndrome will be randomly divided into two groups(1:1 allocation ratio). The intervention group will use ‘‘harmonizing stomach to tranquilize mind"acupuncture, and the control group will receive sham acupuncture. Participants will receive 5 acupuncture treatment sessions per week for 4 consecutive weeks. The Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index will be used to evaluate the clinical efficacy of acupuncture treatment by making assessments at baseline, the end of treatment and the end of the follow-up. High-throughput 16 S ribosomal ribonucleic acid gene sequencing will be performed to detect changes in the intestinal microbial composition before and after treatment.Discussion: The results of this trial are expected to confirm that ‘‘harmonizing stomach to tranquilize mind" acupuncture can effectively relieve insomnia and alter the intestinal microbiome.

Background: Fire-needle acupuncture, an important kind of acupuncture therapy, has been clinically used to treat upper limb spastic paralysis(ULSP) after stroke. Clinical experience has indicated that fire-needle acupuncture treatment takes less time, requires fewer visits, and has more rapid results and fewer side effects compared to chemical medicine alternatives. This study will evaluate the effects of fire-needle acupuncture for ULSP in the context of standardized clinical research and provide high-quality data to inform clinical procedures and future study design.Methods/Design: A randomized controlled trial will be carried out to evaluate the effects of fire-needle acupuncture therapy in patients with ULSP from stroke. ULSP patients(n = 120) will be recruited at Changhai Hospital in Shanghai, China. Patients will be randomly divided into three groups, including fire-needle acupuncture group(FAG), filiform-needle acupuncture group(FFAG) and rehabilitation treatment group(RTG). During the 3-week treatment, the FAG will be treated every two days, while FFAG and RTG will be treated 5 d in a row and then rest for 2 d. The Simplified Fugl-Meyer Motor Function Scale and Modified Ashworth Scale will be used as the primary outcome measures. Statistical analysis will be conducted by an independent statistician.Discussion: Through this study, the utility of fire-needle acupuncture in treating ULSP after stroke will be tested, and some specific claims of fire-needle acupuncture therapy will be evaluated, such as relieving spasm and muscular tension, improving activities of daily living, rapidity of response and less frequency of treatment compared with other treatments.

Objective The Jidong Women Health Cohort Study is a prospective cohort study on female-specific characteristics and risks of chronic diseases in Chinese women and focuses on the potential association between menopause and risks of cardiovascular disease(CVD). Methods The study includes 4,179 female participants with an age of older than 18 years from Caofeidian district, Tangshan city, northern China. Baseline information on female-specific characteristics and potential cardiovascular risk factors was collected and all the participants underwent a physical examination with blood samples collected in 2013. To establish a better risk assessment tool of female CVD, updated information from questionnaire investigation, physical examinations and occurrence of outcome events will be collected through a longitudinal follow-up annually up to the year 2024. Results At baseline, Mean age of the participants was 42.3 ± 12.8 years. Reproduction occurred in 2,948 participants(70.5%), menopausal transition in 173(4.3%), and postmenopause in 1,058(25.3%). The incidence of arterial hypertension, dyslipidemia, and diabetes showed significant difference across different groups stratified by Stage of Reproductive Aging Workshop(STRAW) system(P < 0.05). Conclusion The Jidong Women Health Cohort Study will contribute to the scientific evidence on association between female-specific characteristics and cardiovascular risks, and will also be helpful to provide a new path for early detection and prevention of CVD.

Background: Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis(IPF) has a poor prognosis and is often a kind of heavy financial burden to patients. Currently, few treatments are available for IPF. Clinical practice of traditional Chinese medicine(TCM), using a syndrome differentiation approach, offers some treatment success in IPF. However, there is no sufficient evidence-based study of the role of TCM in IPF management to make strong conclusions. This study evaluates the efficacy and safety of TCM in the treatment of IPF.Methods and design: A multicenter, exploratory, randomized, double-blind and placebo-controlled trial is planned. A total of 80 patients will be enrolled in the study, which will include 26 weeks of treatment.Participants will be randomly assigned into TCM group or control group in a 1:1 ratio. The TCM group will be given TCM granules based on syndrome differentiation. Formulae include Bao-fei Hua-xian granule for lung qi deficiency, Jin-shui Huan-xian granule for lung-kidney qi deficiency and Yang-qing Kang-xian granule for yin deficiency and inner heat. The control group will be given a corresponding TCM granule placebo. The efficacy and safety of interventions will be evaluated by the outcome variables,including frequencies of acute exacerbations, pulmonary function, clinical symptoms, dyspnea, healthrelated quality of life(HRQo L), 6-minute walk distance and safety indicators.Discussion: It is hypothesized that TCM will decrease the frequency of adverse events, improve pulmonary function and HRQo L, based on our clinical experience. This trial is the first study of TCM treatment in IPF that is based on syndrome differentiation and will evaluate the efficacy and safety of TCM in IPF.

Background: Neck pain caused by cervical spondylosis(CS) is a chronic pain condition, with an increasingly high incidence in the general population. Electroacupuncture is a common analgesic modality that has been widely applied in neck pain treatment. However, current electroacupuncture instruments used in the clinic have low intelligence levels and obscure parameter standards. We here designed this study for assessing the effect and safety of a new, intelligent electroacupuncture instrument, the CX-DZ-Ⅱ, in treating neck pain. Methods: The present study is a prospective, two-center, randomized, controlled, open-label, non-inferiority trial for CX-DZ-Ⅱ on treating neck pain caused by CS. Totally 160 eligible patients will be included in this trial and randomly assigned to an experimental group and a control group in a 1:1 ratio. A semi-standard acupoint selection strategy will be employed. In the experimental group, selected acupoints will be stimulated by CX-DZ-Ⅱ. Electroacupuncture treatment will be accomplished by a pre-existing electroacupuncture instrument in the control group. The duration of treatment will be 2 weeks. The primary outcome is the change of Visual Analog Scale(VAS) score after one course of treatment. The secondary outcomes include the VAS scores after each treatment, the responder rate, drug-usage rate of non-steroidal antipyretic analgesics, the rate of adverse events occurrence, and the performance of instrument. Discussion: This study will evaluate the effect and safety of the CX-DZ-Ⅱ intelligent electroacupuncture therapeutic instrument in comparison with a pre-existing non-intelligent instrument in the treatment of neck pain caused by CS. The results will hopefully demonstrate a more optimal electroacupuncture instrument for the treatment of neck pain.(Trial registration No. gov NCT03005301).
