Submarine groundwater discharge enhances primary productivity in the Yellow Sea, China: Insight from the separation of fresh and recirculated components

Submarine groundwater discharge(SGD)is being increasingly recognized as a significant source of nutrient into coastal waters,and generally comprises two components:submarine fresh groundwater discharge(SFGD)and recirculated saline groundwater discharge(RSGD).The separate evaluation of SFGD and RSGD is extremely limited as compared to the conventional estimation of total SGD and associated nutrient fluxes,especially in marginal-scale *** this study,new high-resolution radium isotopes data in seawater and coastal groundwater enabled an estimation of SGD flux in a typical marginal sea of the Yellow *** establishing 226Ra and 228Ra mass balance models,we obtained the SGD-derived radium fluxes,and then estimated the SFGD and RSGD fluxes through a two end-member *** results showed that the total SGD flux into the Yellow Sea was equivalent to approximately 6.6 times the total freshwater discharge of surrounding rivers,and the SFGD flux accounted for only 5.2%–8.8%of the total *** the nutrient concentrations in coastal fresh and saline groundwater,we obtained the dissolved inorganic nutrient fluxes(mmol m^(-2) yr^(-1))to be 52–353 for nitrogen(DIN),0.21–1.4 for phosphorus(DIP),34–226 for silicon(DSi)via SFGD,and 69–262 for DIN,1.0–3.9 for DIP,70–368 for DSi via RSGD,with the sum of nutrient fluxes equaling to(1.8–9.3)-fold,(1.3–5.6)-fold and(2.0–9.5)-fold of the riverine *** to the conventional estimation of the total SGD flux,the nutrient fluxes derived from the separation of SFGD and RSGD were(1.6–2.1),(1.6–1.8)and(4.0–4.9)times lower for DIN,DIP and DSi,respectively,indicating that the estimates by separating SFGD and RSGD could be conservative and representative results of the Yellow ***,we suggested that SGD played an important role in nutrient sources among all the traditional nutrient inputs sources,providing 15%–48%,33%–68%and 14%–43%of the total DIN,DIP and DSi input fluxes into the Yellow Sea,and the high nutrien

Coccolith Assemblages and primary productivity Variations in the Central Western Pacific Warm Pool Over the Last 380 kyr

Coccolith assemblages in two gravity cores(KX21-2 and KX12-1) from the central Western Pacific Warm Pool(WPWP) have been analyzed with SYRACO. The variations of nutricline and primary productivity(PP) have been reconstructed based on these assemblages. The results show that the coccolith assemblages were dominated by Florisphaera profunda, Gephyrocapsa and Emiliania huxleyi over the last 380 kyr. Variations of nutricline and primary productivity can be divided into three intervals. Interval I(about 380–300 kyr): PP was high and nutricline was shallow; Interval II(about 300–160 kyr): PP decreased dramatically for a short time after the acme of G. caribbeanica in Mid-Brunhes while nutricline became deeper; Interval III(about 160 kyr–present): PP fluctuated at low levels and nutricline was deep. Variations of each coccolith taxon and PP were highly correlated in the two cores, which means that the geological environment is similar in the two cores. Spectrum analysis is performed for all coccolith taxons and PP, and the 19-kyr cycle is the most prominent. It means that the production of coccolithophores in the WPWP is mainly controlled by precession.

The size-fractionated chlorophyll a and primary productivity in the Bering Sea during the summer of 2003

Ocean productivity is the foundation of marine food web,which continuously removes atmospheric carbon dioxide and supports life at sea and on ***-temporal variability of net primary productivity(NPP),sea surface temperature(SST),sea surface salinity(SSS),mixed layer depth(MLD),and euphotic zone depth(EZD) in the northern B ay of Bengal(BoB) during three monsoon seasons were examined in this study based on remote sensing data for the period 2005 to *** compare the NPP distribution between the coastal zones and open BoB,the study area was divided into five zones(Z1-Z5).Results suggest that most productive zones Z2 and Zl are located at the head bay area and are directly influenced by freshwater discharge together with riverine sediment and nutrient *** Z1-Z5,the NPP ranges from 5 315.38 mg/(m^(2)·d) to 346.7 mg/(m^(2)·d)(carbon,since then the same).The highest monthly average NPP of 5 315.38 mg/(m^(2)·d) in February and 5 039.36 mg/(m^(2)·d) in June were observed from Z2,while the lowest monthly average of 346.72 mg/(m^(2)·d) was observed in March from Z4,which is an oceanic *** values vary from 6-154 m for the study area,and it has an inverse correlation with NPP *** is deeper during the summer season and shallower during the wintertime,with a corresponding increase in *** the year,monthly SST shows slight fluctuation for the entire study area,and statistical analysis shows a significant correlation among NPP,and EZD,overall positive between NPP and MLD,whereas no significant correlation among SSS,and SST for the northern ***-term trends in SST and productivity were significantly po sitive in head bay zones but negatively productive in the open *** findings in this study on the distribution of NPP,SST,SSS,MLD,and EZD and their seasonal variability in five different zones of BoB can be used to further improve the management of marine resources and overall environmental condition in response to clim

Biogenic opal and calcium carbonate contents in the Quaternary fine-grained sediments in the deep sea coral mound area (Hole U1317E and Hole U1318B drilled by IODP Expedition 307) in Porcupine Seabight, southwest off Ireland, were measured to estimate the primary productivity (Pp) of the surface seawater in NE Atlantic. The results from the two holes commonly show relatively high Pp values of 10-30 g cm-2 ky-1, having stratigraphic cyclicity reversely correlated with the δ13C profile. The high Pp could be attributed to the oceanic setting controlled by the Eastern North Atlantic (Central) Water and Shelf Edge Current, which have been strongly influenced by the obliquity forcing of the Milankovitch cycle. A positive covariance was observed between high Pp and the mound development in U1317E, implying that the organic matter was the principal food source for the mound coral community. It is proposed that the pelagic marl matrix of the mound sediments provides information of the surface water productivity that is useful for reconstructing the paleoceanography and the paleoclimate in the NW Atlantic.

Responses of primary productivity to Current and Climate Changes in the Mud Area to the Southwest of Cheju Island During the Past 800 Years

The biogenic silica (BSi) ,total organic carbon (TOC) ,total nitrogen (TN) and grain size were analyzed with a gravity core (3250-6) collected from the mud area in the north East China *** average deposition rate of the upper core was about 0.078cm yr1based on the results of *** mean grain size increased with depth in *** frequency distribution of grain size showed that two marked changes of deposition environment occurred at 30 cm and 50 cm depths (about 1550 AD and 1300 AD,respectively) .The variations of BSi and TOC indicated two distinct major periods of primary productivity over the past 800 years:a stage of low primary productivity corresponding to weak upwelling and low nutrient input below 30 cm depth (about 1200-1550 AD) ,and a stage of high primary productivity with strong currents and upwelling above 30 cm depth (about 1550-1950 AD) .The stage with high primary productive appeared to be due to the northward-expanded muddy area caused by strong Asian Winter Monsoon and enhanced Yellow Sea Warm Current in *** conclusion,the BSi and TOC in the muddy sediments,the symbols of marine primary productivity,can be then used to investigate the evolution history of currents and relative climate change in the offshore areas.

Standing stock of phytoplankton and primary productivity in Penaeus orientalis larval multiplication releasing area of the Xiangshan Bay

The standing stock of phytoplankton (phy. ) and primary productivity (pp) in the Xiangshan Bay were observed in 1992. The results showed higher biological parameters in the bay. The average chlorophyll a (chl a) concentration was (3. 50 5. 93 ) mg/m3 and the primary productivity (444. 5 871. 0) mg/(m2 d). The distribution of chl a and productivity showed distinct spatial and temporal patterns in the bay. The continent influence was Obvious at the top of the bay, lower seawater exchange and higher stability led to higher standing stock of phytoplankton and productivity. At the bay mouth, seawater exchanged continuously with adjacent waters by rapid currents, resulting in fast and unstable exchange and lower standing stock of phytoplankton and primary productivity. The seasonal characters of those parameters were pronounced, in the sequence of spring, summer, autumn and winter. The results of size--fractionated showed that the average contribution of the nano--and picoplankton (productivity were 75 % and 87%, respectively, indicating their importance in phytoplankton community biomass and productivity of the Xiangshan Bay.

The investigation of phytoplankton standing stock, euphotic layer and photosynthesis rate were carried out in 19 27 of January, 2000 at three longitudinal sections (70°30′E, 73°00′E and 75°30′E). The results showed that the high value of chlorophyll a concentration was in inshore bay, polynya and the continental slope of the investigated sea area. At various investigated stations, average chlorophyll a concentration at sub surface layer (25 m) was higher than that at surface layer; its concentration at the deeper layers of over 50 m decreased with increasing depth. At anchor station, the maximum chlorophyll a concentration appeared at surface layer in Antarctic summer's afternoon while the minimum value appeared in the morning; chlorophyll a concentration at water layer of 0 25 m was obviously higher than that at deep water layer, being related to the releasing of ice algae. High productivity was in inshore bay and polynya of continental shelf. Chlorophyll a concentration at surface layer is closely correlated to the dissolved oxygen concentration in seawater. The sea area with chlorophyll a concentration of over 1.0 μg/dm 3 may be the convergence of CO 2 and that of below 1.0 μg/dm 3 may be the source of CO 2.

VERTICAL PROFILES OF CHL-A AND primary productivity IN THE MIDDLE CONTINENTAL SHELF AREA AND EDDY AREA OF THE EAST CHINA SEA

Vertical profiles of chl-a and primary productivity in the middle continental shelf area and eddy area of the East China Sea were studied using data from a cruise in the East China Sea in February to March, 1997 and a cruise in July, 1998. The results showed that chl-a vertical distribution closely related to in situ hydrological and nutrient conditions. Chla-a concentration ranged from 0.22 to 0.35 mg/m 3 and 0.93-1.09 mg/m 3 in the eddy area and in the middle continental shelf area, respectively. In both areas, chl-a concentrations in deep layers were slightly higher than those in shallow layers, but was of the same order of magnitude. In summer, when a thermocline existed in the water column, highest chl-a concentrations appeared at the base of the thermocline layers in both areas. In the eddy area, chl-a concentration maximized at 3l.743 mg/m 3, and averaged l.143 mg/m 3 below 30 m depth. In the middle continental shelf area, the highest chl-a concentration was 2.120 mg/m 3, the average was 1.168 mg/m 3. The primary productivity reached 1418.76 mgC/(m 2·d) in summer and 1360.69 mgC/(m 2·d) in winter. In the eddy area, the primary productivity was 787.50 mgC/(m 2·d) in summer and 159.04 mgC/(m 2·d) in winter. Vertical carbon sinking rate from the deep layer to the bottom in both areas is also discussed in this paper.

primary production processes in the Taiwan Strait──Spatial and temporal variations of phytoplankton biomass and productivity

The abundance,diurnal variation features of phytoplankton biomass and the horizontal distribution patterns of Chl. a and primary productivity in the Taiwan Strait were investigated during a summer and a winter cruise inAugust 1994 and February 1995, respectively. Results show that the horizontal distribution of phytoplankton biomasswas quite similar to that of *** summer, there was a relatively barren, low priductive region in the centallocation of the northern Taiwan Starit (NTS), and high productive regions were located at the nearshore and to thenorth of Cape Fugui of Taiwan Island; meanwhile, high productivity regions were only located at coastal waters of thesouthern Taiwan Strait (STS). In winter, high productive regions of NTS occurred off northwestern coast of TaiwanIsland, while that of STS was located along the southem edge of Minnan (South Fujian) - Taiwan Bank. Vertical patterns of the diurnal variation of Chl. a indicated that in non-stratified waters, phytoplankton biomass changed in tiedrhythm; as for the stratified waters, the depth at which the highest variation amplitude located located coincided with thedepth where the highest variation frequency occurred. The grazing pressure of zooplankton strongly influenced the diurnal variation of size-fractionated structure of phytoplankton biomass. As a result of our investgitions, we concludethat in the Taiwan Strait, biological porcesses may be more important at smaller scales where behaviors such as verticalmigration and predation may control the phytoplankton production, whereas physical processes may be more importantat larger scales in structuring phytoplankton patchness.
