Relationship between predicted oxygen uptake and cigarette smoking in Japanese men

The link between cigarette smoking and predicted oxygen uptake was investigated using data for 149 Japanese men not taking medication. Cigarette smoking habits were obtained through interviews by well-trained staff. The influence of cigarette smoking on predicted oxygen uptake, predicted work rate and predicted heart rate were evaluated. predicted oxygen uptake decreased with age. predicted oxygen uptake and predicted work rate in men who smoked cigarettes was significantly lower than in subjects who did not, after adjusting for age. The differences in parameters did not reach significant levels after adjusting for age and physical activity evaluated by Σ[metabolic equivalents × h per week (METs?h/w)] (predicted oxygen uptake: p = 0.0632, predicted work rate: p = 0.0873). Cigarette smoking might be a modifyable factor for improving the aerobic exercise level in Japanese men.

AIM: To investigate extravascular lung water indexed to predicted body weight(EVLWIp) and actual body weight(EVLWIa) on outcome of patients with severe ***: Transpulmonary thermodilution was prospectively used to measure cardiovascular hemodynamics, EVLWIp and EVLWIa via an arterial catheter placed in each patient within 48 h of meeting the criteria for severe sepsis from a medical intensive care unit(ICU) at a university affiliated hospital. Survival was the single dependent variable. In order to examine and compare the predictive power of EVLWIp, EVLWIa and other clinically significant factors in predicting the inhospital survival status of severe sepsis patients in the medical ICU, a receiver operating characteristic(ROC) curve method to analyze the significant variables and the area under the ROC curve(AUC) of the variables, P value and 95%CI were ***: In total, 33 patients were studied. In the ROC curve method analyses, EVLWIp(the AUC: 0.849; P = 0.001, 95%CI: 0.72-0.98) was as predictive for inhospital survival rate as variables with EVLWIa(AUC, 0.829; P = 0.001, 95%CI: 0.68-0.98). The proportion of patients surviving with a low EVLW(EVLWI predicted body weight(HR = 0.13; P < 0.0001, 95%CI: 0.05-0.35) during their hospital stay with the Kaplan-Meier method(76% vs 12.5%, respectively).CONCLUSION: This investigation proposed that EVLWIp is as good a predictor as EVLWIa to predict inhospital survival rate among severe sepsis patients in the medical ICU.

Objective: To determine whether there was any association between resistance to antibiotics and decreased susceptibility to antiseptics and disinfectants and their importance in clinical practice. Methods: We studied a large number of microorganisms isolated from ICU patients (high percentage of cases of antibiotic resistance). The antibiogram (Kirby-Bauer) was determined and, in parallel, the bactericidal effect was assessed by two methods, according to the product used: 1) Effect on rough material (endodontic files) in 10 min, using five disinfectants;2) Effect on a skin equivalent (sterile cotton cloth) in 30 sec, for two alcohol solutions. A predictive equation of the bactericidal effects versus microorganisms’ antibiogram was obtained by multivariate methods. Results:?Bactericidal efficacy was very similar for all the products with the exception of 1% povidone-iodine. Within each product there were no significant differences between the three groups of microorganisms: “Enterobacteria”, “Non Fermentative Gram Negative Bacteria” and “cocci”. Multivariate study only obtained one significant equation: 1% chlorhexidine resistance was directly correlated with aztreonam resistance (OR = 2.16), while resistance to imipenem and to phosphomycin acted as protection factors (OR < 1). Conclusion: There is no necessary to change the indications for antiseptics or disinfectants in ICUs, except if aztreonam resistance is high. In which caseis better to use greater concentration than 1% of Chlorhexidine.

Due to long-term and extensive use ,English in Hong Kong has formed many localized features. Based onvarious sources , this paper provides a description of three types of them : phonetic ,morpho-syntactic and lexi-cal features. The majority of these features,as can be observed,were formed as a result of mother tongue in-fluence. The paper also presents a discussion of whether English in Hong Kong will eventually become a dis-tinct variety.

Soil erosion is one of the most important environmental problems, and it remains as a major threat to the land use of hilly regions of Tripura. The present study aims at estimating potential and actual soil loss (t·h-1·y-1) as well as to indentify the major erosion prone sub-watersheds in the study area. Average annual soil loss has been estimated by multiplying five parameters, i.e.: R (the rainfall erosivity factor), K (the soil erodibility factor), LS (the topographic factor), C (the crop management factor) and P (the conservation support practice). Such estimation is based on the principles de- fined in the Universal Soil Loss Equation (USLE) with some modifications. This intensity of soil erosion has been divided into different priority classes. The whole study area has been subdivided into 23 sub watersheds in order to identify the priority areas in terms of the intensity of soil erosion. Each sub-watershed has further been studied intensively in terms of rainfall, soil type, slope, land use/land cover and soil erosion to determine the dominant factor leading to higher erosion. The average annual predicted soil loss ranges between 11 and 836 t·h-1·y-1. Low soil loss areas (·h-1·y-1) have mostly been recorded under densely forested areas.

Based on the research of predictingβ-hairpin motifs in proteins, we apply Random Forest and Support Vector Machine algorithm to predictβ-hairpin motifs in ArchDB40 dataset. The motifs with the loop length of 2 to 8 amino acid residues are extracted as research object and thefixed-length pattern of 12 amino acids are selected. When using the same characteristic parameters and the same test method, Random Forest algorithm is more effective than Support Vector Machine. In addition, because of Random Forest algorithm doesn’t produce overfitting phenomenon while the dimension of characteristic parameters is higher, we use Random Forest based on higher dimension characteristic parameters to predictβ-hairpin motifs. The better prediction results are obtained;the overall accuracy and Matthew’s correlation coefficient of 5-fold cross-validation achieve 83.3% and 0.59, respectively.
