Air Pollution may increase the sleep apnea severity:A nationwide analysis of smart device-based monitoring

Obstructive sleep apnea(OSA)can lead to sleep deprivation,accidents,and cardiovascular diseases.However,research on the short-term effects of air pollutants on OSA severity is limited and inconsistent.We conducted a novel case time series analysis using a nationwide dataset among Huawei smart device users to assess the association between air Pollution and OSA severity in a population at moderate-to-severe risk of OSA.Fixed-effects regression models were used to assess the associations between air Pollution and the risk of OSA exacerbation,apnea-hypopnea index(AH),and oxygen saturation.A total of 51,842 participants who were at moder-ate-tosevere risk of OSA(mean age[SD]:45.4[11.0],95.5%male)were included,with 6,232,056 person-days of monitoring.The as sociations of fine particulate matter,nitrogen dioxide,carbon monoxide,and sulfur dioxide with OSA severity could occur during the sleep period,and last for 2 days.An increase of 1 interquartile range in the moving average concentrations of air Pollution during the sleep period and the 2 previous days was associated with a 1.14%-4.31%increase in the risk of OSA exacerbation,an increase in AHI by 0.05-0.17 events/h,and a decrease in oxygen saturation(%)by 0.003-0.014.The exposure-response curves were almost linear.The associations between air pollutants and OSA were consistently stronger in participants aged 45 years or older.By virtue of the smart device-based technology,this largescale,nationwide,longitudinal study provides compelling evidence that short-term exposure to air Pollution may worsen sleep apnea.Our findings highlight the significance of ongoing efforts to improve air quality in mitigating OSA severity and the relevant disease burden in an aging era.

As the largest steel-producing country,China’s steel industry has experienced rapid development in terms of production level and quality.Owing to the high consumption of coal in the iron and steel industry,air pollutants and carbon dioxide(CO_(2))show similar emission properties in flue gas.In view of the collaborative reduction of Pollution and carbon emissions,the emission standards for pollutants and carbon were first analyzed,suggesting that carbon emission standards for the iron and steel industry should be accelerated.A collaborative technology system for the reduction of Pollution and carbon emissions from the iron and steel industry in China is demonstrated,consisting of(1)optimization of present ultra-low emission technology,(2)low-carbon innovation for present production processes,(3)steel production process reengineering,and(4)carbon capture,utilization,and storage(CCUS).Finally,the technical prospect for collaborative reduction of Pollution and carbon emissions from the iron and steel industry in China is suggested to support high-quality green development in this industry.

Air Pollution is one of the biggest environmental threats to human health.In 2005,the World Health Organization(WHO)released its first global air quality guidelines(AQGs)for particulate matter(PM),ozone(O3),nitrogen dioxide(NO2),and sulfur dioxide.[1]On September 22,2021,the WHO updated its AQGs,providing clear evidence of the adverse health effects of air Pollution,at even lower concentrations than previously understood.[2]For instance,the WHO AQGs 2021 recommend annual mean concentrations of PM2.5 not exceeding 5μg/m3 and NO2 not exceeding 10μg/m3 and the peak season mean 8-h O3 concentration not exceeding 60μg/m.[2,3]As a comparison,the corresponding WHO AQGs 2005 values were 10μg/m3 for PM2.5 and 40μg/m3 for NO2,with no recommendation for long-term O3 concentrations.

Wildfire episodes have become more frequent and severe in recent years.1 Record-breaking fires devastated the Arctic,Amazon,and Australia in 2019–2020.This year,fires began in Canada in May and lasted for several months,resulting in an area burned of 16.5 million hectares by early September.This size is 6–7 times the annual fire area for a normal year in Canada.The favorable fire weather for burning and spread lasted for months(https://cwfis.***.nrcan.***.ca/maps/fw).Furthermore,most Canadian fires occur in remote regions far from firefighting facilities,causing fire extinction to be difficult.Unfortunately,such“unprecedented”fire events occurred routinely in boreal regions between 2020 and 2023,although the locations varied from year to year(Figure 1).

Major fields such as military applications,medical fields,weather forecasting,and environmental applications use wireless sensor networks for major computing processes.Sensors play a vital role in emerging technologies of the 20th century.Localization of sensors in needed locations is a very serious problem.The environment is home to every living being in the world.The growth of industries after the industrial revolution increased Pollution across the environment.Owing to recent uncontrolled growth and development,sensors to measure Pollution levels across industries and surroundings are needed.An interesting and challenging task is choosing the place to fit the sensors.Many meta-heuristic techniques have been introduced in node localization.Swarm intelligent algorithms have proven their efficiency in many studies on localization problems.In this article,we introduce an industrial-centric approach to solve the problem of node localization in the sensor network.First,our work aims at selecting industrial areas in the sensed location.We use random forest regression methodology to select the polluted area.Then,the elephant herding algorithm is used in sensor node localization.These two algorithms are combined to produce the best standard result in localizing the sensor nodes.To check the proposed performance,experiments are conducted with data from the KDD Cup 2018,which contain the name of 35 stations with concentrations of air pollutants such as PM,SO_(2),CO,NO_(2),and O_(3).These data are normalized and tested with algorithms.The results are comparatively analyzed with other swarm intelligence algorithms such as the elephant herding algorithm,particle swarm optimization,and machine learning algorithms such as decision tree regression and multi-layer perceptron.Results can indicate our proposed algorithm can suggest more meaningful locations for localizing the sensors in the topology.Our proposed method achieves a lower root mean square value with 0.06 to 0.08 for localizing with Stations 1 to 5.

The COVID-19 pandemic has escalated into one of the largest crises of the 21 st Century.The new SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus,responsible for COVID-19,has spread rapidly all around the world.The Spanish Government was forced to declare a nationwide lockdown in view of the rapidly spreading virus and high mortality rate in the nation.This study investigated the impact of short-term lockdown during the period from March 15th to April 12th 2020 on the atmospheric levels of CO,SO_(2),PM_(10),O_(3),and NO_(2)over 11 representative Spanish cities.The possible influence of several meteorological factors(temperature,precipitation,wind,sunlight hours,minimum and maximum pressure)on the pollutants'levels were also considered.The results obtained show that the 4-week lockdown had significant impact on reducing the atmospheric levels of NO_(2)in all cities except for the small city of Santander as well as CO,SO_(2),and PM_(10)in some cities,but resulted in increase of O_(3)level.

1.Introduction There is a pressing need to transition into a sustainable society,committed to achieving zero Pollution.Water,humanity’s most precious resource,can galvanize the environmental,social,and economic transformations called for in the European Union(EU)Green Deal.Improved water use and protection are essential components for addressing the global climate and biodiversity crises.To achieve the goal of zero Pollution,investment is required and specific policies need to be implemented to address certain contaminants of emerging concern(CECs),such as endocrinedisrupting chemicals,pharmaceuticals,and microplastics;this is particularly pertinent given that conventional wastewater treatment is ineffective in dealing with these pollutants[1-4].As such,innovative solutions that facilitate the transition into processes with zero Pollution discharges are highly desirable.
