New generation thermo-mechanical control process（TMCP） based on ultra-fast cooling is being widely adopted in plate mill to product high-performance steel material at low cost. Ultra-fast cooling system is complex because of optimizing the temperature control error generated by heat transfer mathematical model and process parameters. In order to simplify the system and improve the temperature control precision in ultra-fast cooling process, several existing models of case-based reasoning（CBR） model are reviewed. Combining with ultra-fast cooling process, a developed R5 CBR model is proposed, which mainly improves the case representation, similarity relation and retrieval module. Certainty factor is defined in semantics memory unit of plate case which provides not only internal data reliability but also product performance reliability. Similarity relation is improved by defined power index similarity membership function. Retrieval process is simplified and retrieval efficiency is improved apparently by windmill retrieval algorithm. The proposed CBR model is used for predicting the case of cooling strategy and its capability is superior to traditional process model. In order to perform comprehensive investigations on ultra-fast cooling process, different steel plates are considered for the experiment. The validation experiment and industrial production of proposed CBR model are carried out, which demonstrated that finish cooling temperature（FCT） error is controlled within±25℃ and quality rate of product is more than 97%. The proposed CBR model can simplify ultra-fast cooling system and give quality performance for steel product.

A novel method for generating a rolling schedule is presented, which is fundamentally different from the existing ones. KDD (knowledge discovery in database) techniques are applied for discovering association rules between rolling parameters in a large database of rolling operation, and based on these rules, the schedule for the crucial last six finishing passes is generated. Operational evaluation shows that the schedule generated by the new method outperforms that generated by existing methods. It also shows how in this application the human's domain knowledge is applied to speed up the KDD process and to ensure the validity of the knowledge discovered.

This paper describes the benefits, technical difficulties and disadvantages of the current heavy reduction solutions for plate production. For updated plate mills,this paper gives a better idea for the heavy reduction control in the rolling process. That is to keep the reduction amount constant in the front-end and back-end sections of the plate and to adopt tapered rolling with variable reduction in the middle section of the plate. This solution （ already applied for a patent） can not only fully utilize the capacity of the mill motors, but also prevent difficulties in plate biting caused by the conventional heavy reduction solutions with excessive draft. This technical solution has been implemented at the 5 m plate mill plant of Baosteel,and industrial tests have proved the feasibility of it. This paper presents and analyzes the industrial test data and proves that the tapered heavy reduction technology can reduce the number of rolling passes. In addition ,this paper looks forward to the future research in this area.

Employing Simulated Annealing Algorithm (SAA) and many measured data, acalculation model of work roll wear was built in the 2 800 mm 4-high mill of Wuhan Iron and Steel(Group) Co. (WISCO). The model was a semi-theory practical formula. Its pattern and magnitude werestill hardly defined with classical optimization methods. But the problem could be resolved by *** was pretty high precision to predict the values for the wear profiles of work roll in a rollingunit. After one-year application, the results show that the model is feasible in engineering, and itcan be applied to predict the wear profiles of work roll in other mills.

The precision width control is vital for product quality and production economy in plate width control process, so short stroke control method was used in plate rolling by opening or closing edger gap so as to avoid head end necking. Head end necking on different broadening ratio was analyzed, and sections of different elongations at edger roiling was calculated; based on the law of volume constancy, the adjustment functions were described by parabolic functions. Control curves were developed with three Gaussian curves by means of additional combining; SSC control curve was changed with different weights of those curves, w1 effect one-third of SSC length, w2 effect two-third of SSC length, w3 effect all three parts of SSC length. In order to adjust the amount of weights for precise quantification, PSO algorithm was used to build sufficiency function so as to obtain best rectangular degree by global optimization. Practical applications showed that the method proposed is available to improve the product rolling yields by 1.0% -2. 0% and worthy to apply to plate rolling.

There is a certain extent of measuring error for each pyrometer in plate production process,which has a great impact on process control system.A soft sensor technique is used to calculate the confidence interval of measuring temperature data from pyrometers and an inference estimator is designed by partial least square method,then the pyrometer with highest confidence is considered as the reference one,with which inference estimation for measured data on-line of other pyrometers is started and the measuring error is *** actual application it can be found that this method can improve the measuring accuracy by 3%-5%,and has high field application value.

An integrated plate mill has started it’s operation on July 7, 2010 in Gwangyang Steelworks, POSCO. The production capability is about 2.5 million tons per year and the main stream consists of Blast Furnace, Hot metal pretreatment (KR), Converter, Bubbling Station, RH/VTD and Continuous Casting. Particularly, it is possible to control sulfur concentration at excellent level in BOF without any further treatment in LF or VTD, which is attained by unique KR process and scrap usage strategy in BOF. In this paper, desulfurization efficiency and steel cleanliness was introduced by optimizing flux amount during tapping in BOF process. In addition, the effect of the flux addition on the refractory of ladle was investigated based on EPMA analyses with the viewpoint of phase diagram. The cleanliness of each sample was examined using optical emission spectrometry and oxygen nitrogen determinator.
