Grasslands are one of the largest coupled human-nature terrestrial ecosystems on Earth,and severe anthropogenic-induced grassland ecosystem function declines have been reported *** factors influencing grassland ecosystem functions is critical for making sustainable management *** structure is an important factor influencing plant growth through mediating within-canopy microclimate(e.g.,light,water,and wind),and it is found coordinating tightly with plant species diversity to influence forest ecosystem ***,the role of canopy structure in regulating grassland ecosystem functions along with plant species diversity has been rarely ***,we investigated this problem by collecting field data from 170 field plots distributed along an over 2000 km transect across the northern agro-pastoral ecotone of *** net primary productivity(ANPP)and resilience,two indicators of grassland ecosystem functions,were measured from field data and satellite remote sensing *** laser scanning data were collected to measure canopy structure(represented by mean height and canopy cover).Our results showed that plant species diversity was positively correlated to canopy structural traits,and negatively correlated to human activity *** structure was a significant indicator for ANPP and resilience,but their correlations were inconsistent under different human activity intensity *** to plant species diversity,canopy structural traits were better indicators for grassland ecosystem functions,especially for *** structure equation modeling analyses,we found that plant species diversity did not have a direct influence on ANPP under human ***,it had a strong indirect effect on ANPP by altering canopy structural *** to resilience,plant species diversity had both a direct positive contribution and an indirect contribution through mediating canopy *** study highlig

Glade and Forest-Edge plant Community Attributes for Three Glade Types in Arusha National Park, Tanzania

The aim of the study was to compare glade and forest-glade edge plant community attributes for man-made, upper and lower natural glades. Two plots were set up in twelve glades at 2.5, 12.5 m and three plots in thirteen glades at 2.5, 12.5 and 22.5 m depending on the size of the glade. The results showed that plants total abundance, percentage basal cover, species richness and species diversity for upper and lower natural glades differed significantly p species diversity for man-made glades p plant species abundance, richness and diversity were highest at the forest-glade edge and decreased towards the glade interior. plant species composition of the three glades types differed significantly (MRPP: T = -4.51, p species richness and forbs species diversity differed significantly for man-made glades p species richness was highly significant p species richness and diversity were significant P species richness and species diversity differed significantly p 2 = 15.95, df = 4, p Eleusine jaegeri, Heterogon contortus, Senna mimisoides, Digitaria scalarum, Clutia abyssinica) were habitat indicators for disturbed areas, wet humid grey/black clay soils for upper natural glades and three (Solanum incanum, Senna didymobotrya, and Pennistem mezianum, were indicators of overgrazed areas and black clay soils for man-made glades.
