Seasonal variations in planktonic foraminiferal flux and the chemical properties of their shells in the southern South China Sea

Results from sediment trap experiments conducted in the southern South China Sea from May 2004 to March 2006 revealed significant monsoon-induced seasonal variations in flux and shell geochemistry of planktonic foraminifera. The total and species-specific fluxes showed bimodal pattern, such as those of Globigerinoides ruber, Globigerinoides sacculifer, Neoglobo-quadrina dutertrei, Globigerinita glutinata, and Globigerina bulloides. Their high values occurred in the prevailing periods of the northeast and southwest monsoons, and the low ones appeared between the monsoons. Pulleniatina obliquiloculata had high flux rates mainly during northeast monsoon, with exceptional appearance in August 2004. These fluxes changed largely in accord with those of total particle matter and organic carbon, following chlorophyll concentration and wind force. It is inferred that the biogenic particle fluxes are controlled essentially by primary productivity under the influence of East Asian monsoon in the southern SCS. Shell stable oxygen isotope and Mg/Ca data correspond with seasonal variation of sea surface temperature. Shell δ18O values are affected primarily by sea water temperature, and the δ18O changes of different-depth dwelling species indicate upper sea water temperature gradient. Besides, the low carbon isotope values occurred in the periods of East Asian monsoon in general, whereas the high ones between the monsoons. The pattern is in contrary to chlorophyll concentration change, which indicates that the variation of the carbon isotope could probably reflect the change of sea surface productivity.

Quantitative Analysis of planktonic Foraminifera in Surface Sediments From the South China Sea

Q-mode factor analysis was applied to 99 surface samples from the South China Sea to define four planktonic foraminiferal assemblages: tropical-subtropical assemblage, high-salinity assemblage, transitional assemblage and dissolution resistant assemblage. The tropical-subtropical assemblage is a dominant assemblage. The variation of the planktonic foraminifera of this assemblage reflects the changes of tropical surface water from the west Pacific to South China Sea. These four assemblages reveal that different planktonic foraminiferal assemblages are controlled by different factors in the South China Sea, such as tropical-subtropical assemblage controlled by sea surface temperature (SST), high-sallnity assemblage mainly by salinity besides SST, transitional assemblage by SST and dissolution resistant assemblage by water depth.

The increasing emergence of multi-drug resistant Escherichia coli(***)has become a global concern,primarily due to the limitation of antimicrobial treatment *** therapy has been considered as a promising alternative for treating infections caused by multi-drug resistant ***,the application of phages as a promising antimicrobial agent is limited by their narrow host range and *** this research,a recombinant T4-like phage,named WGqlae,has been obtained by changing the receptor specificity determinant region of gene 37,using a homologous recombination platform of T4-like phages established by our laboratory *** engineered phage WGqlae can lyse four additional hosts,comparing to its parental phages WG01 and *** showed similar characteristics,including thermo and pH stability,optimal multiplicity of infection and one-step growth curve,to the donor phage *** addition,sequencing results showed that gene 37 of recombinant phage WGqlae had genetically stable even after 20 *** planktonic test,phage WGqlae had significant antimicrobial effects on *** DE192 and DE205 *** optical density at 600 nm(OD600)of *** in phage WGqlae treating group was significantly lower than that of the control group(P\0.01).Besides,phage WGqlae demonstrated an obvious inhibitory effect on the biofilm formation and the clearance of mature *** study suggested that engineered phages may be promising candidates for future phage therapy applications against pathogenic *** in planktonic and biofilm forms.

A broad deglacial δ^(13)C minimum event in planktonic foraminiferal records in the Okinawa Trough

The equatorial Pacific upwelling zone has been suspected of playing an important role in the global atmospheric CO2 changes associated with glacial-interglacial cycles. In order to assess the influencing scope of the surface water deglacial δ13C minimum in the tropical low-latitude Pacific, the core DGKS9603, collected from the middle Okinawa Trough, was examined for δ13C records of planktonic fo-raminifera N. dutertrei and G. ruber. The planktonic fo-raminiferal δ13C records show a clear decreasing event from 20 to 6 cal. kaBP., which is characterized by long duration of about 14 ka and amplitude shift of 0.4×10-3. Its minimum value occurred at 15.7 cal kaBP. The event shows fairly synchrony with the surface water deglacial δ13C minimum identified in the tropical Pacific and its marginal seas. Because there is no evidence in planktonic foraminiferal fauna and δ18O records for upwelling and river runoff enhancement, the broad deglacial δ13C minimum event in planktonic foraminiferal records

planktonic Foraminifera Diversity in the Sea of Okhotsk and Correlation to Past Climate Change

80 sediment stations and 4 sediment cores collected in the Sea of Okhotsk were used in this study in order to reveal additional proxy for past climate reconstruction based on planktonic foraminifera. Variation in diversity indices (Simpson, Shannon and equitability indices) along the sea became additional criteria for 5 biogeographical provinces based on planktonic foraminifera. All of them show different structure aspects of the planktonic foraminifera assemblages that is very informative in cases of high relative abundance of N. pachyderma sin. and influence of carbonate dissolution factor. During the last 100 ky the diversity indices were changed and we can assume the migration of biogeographical provinces borders: borders of the Northern province were mov- ed to the central part in cold MIS 2, 4, structure of assemblages during MIS 3, 5 was close to the modern Central province but characterized by low total foraminiferal abundance in the sediments. The Simpson and Shannon indices are more sensitive to changes in structure of planktonic foraminifera assemblages when equitability index varies lightly during the Late Pleistocene-Holocene.

planktonic foraminifera and sea surface temperature (SST) of the Xisha Trough, South China Sea since Last Glaciation

The high-resolution analysis on the carbon and oxygen isotopes and planktonic fo-raminifera of core SA12-19 dated with 14C approach in the Xisha Trough of South China Sea indi-cates that sediments are attributed to oxygen isotope stages 1—3 (stage 3 is not included com-pletely), during the late-glacial to post-glacial periods. The sea surface temperature (SST) of each sample is calculated based on palaeoecological transfer functions (FP-12E). The results reveal a gradual thermocline increase in this area during oxygen isotope stages 1—3 e.g. a temporal thermocline deepening in the middle Holocene. During the Holocene, the SST was 23.3—27.2℃ in winter, 28.8—29.8℃ in summer. During oxygen isotope stage 2, the SST was 21.4—24.4℃ in winter, 28.1—29.0℃ in summer; and 21.9—25.2℃ in winter, 28.5—29.3℃ in summer during oxygen isotope stage 3. The SST in winter during oxygen isotope stage 2 was 2—6℃ lower than that of stage 3. During the transitional period, a Younger Dryas Event, standing for a rapid cli-mate return, occurred obviously.

Late Cretaceous Biostratigraphy planktonic Foraminifera of the Farokhi Formation, Iran

The Farokhi Formation is one of the informal Central Iran formations, which is located in the NW Tabas township. The Tabas area is a part of the Central Iran sedimentary basin which is located in the Yazd Province. The Farokhi stratigraphic section is located 7 km northwest from Farokhi village (33°54' 9''N and 54°52'48''E). The Bazyab, Debarso, Haftoman and Choopanan formations are well-exposed in the studied area. In this study, the Farokhi Formation is investigated in the Farokhi stratigraphic section with regard to planktonic foraminifera. The Farokhi Formation is mainly composed of thick-bedded limestones with ammonoids, thin-bedded limestone with silicified echinoids and ichnofossils, marls with nodular cherts, spherical corals and bivalves. Biostratigraphy of the Farokhi Formation at type section has been concentrated in view of planktonic foraminifera. Thickness of this formation is 251 meters. The lower and upper contacts of studied formation with Haftoman and Choopanan formations are respectively conform and inconsistent. In view of late research, it has been identified that 28 planktonic foraminifera species have a place with 9 genera in edge of 6 biozones, for example: 1) Globotruncanita elevata Partial Range Zone. 2) Globotruncana ventricosa Interval Zone. 3) Globotruncanita stuartiformis Partial Range Zone. 4) Globotruncana aegyptiaca Interval Zone. 5) Gansserina gansseri Interval Zone. 6) Contu-sotruncana contusa Interval Zone. Finally based on this research, Early Campanian-Late Maastrichtian ages for the Farokhi Formation at type locality have been determined.

Evolution and variation of the Tsushima warm current during the late Quaternary: Evidence from planktonic foraminifera, oxygen and carbon isotopes

The evolution and variation history of the Tsushima warm current during the late Quaternary was reconstructed based on the quantitative census data of planktonic foraminiferal fauna, together with oxygen and carbon isotope records of mixed layer dweller G. ruber and thermocline dweller N. dutertrei in piston core CSH1 and core DGKS9603 collected separately from the Tsushima warm current and the Kuroshio dominated area. The result showed that the Tsushima warm current vanished in the lowstand period during 40―24 cal ka BP, while the Kuroshio still flowed across the Okinawa Trough, arousing strong upwelling in the northern Trough. Meanwhile, the influence of freshwater greatly increased in the northern Okinawa Trough, as the broad East China Sea continental shelf emerged. The freshwater reached its maximum during the last glacial maximum (LGM), when the upwelling obviously weakened for the lowest sea-level and the depression of the Kuroshio. The modern Tsushima warm current began its development since 16 cal ka BP, and the impact of the Kuroshio increased in the middle and north- ern Okinawa Trough synchronously during the deglaciation and gradually evolved as the main water source of the Tsushima current. The modern Tsushima current finally formed at about 8.5 cal ka BP, since then the circulation structure has been relatively stable. The water of the modern Tsushima cur- rent primarily came from the Kuroshio axis. A short-term wiggle of the current occurred at about 3 cal ka BP, probably for the influences from the enhancement of the winter monsoon and the depression of the Kuroshio. The cold water masses greatly strengthened during the wiggle.
