Evaluation of regeneration potential of pinus koraiensis in mixed pine-hardwood forests in the Xiao Xing'an Mountains,China

Large scale harvest of Korean pine （pinus koraiensis） seeds as a food product in the mixed Korean pine-hardwood forest of northeastern China poses a serious threat to the sustainability and restoration of this endangered regional ecosystem. Seed collection over past decades greatly reduced the seed bank and subsequent seedling and sapling re- cruitment, and impacting a wide array of granivorous animals that rely on the pine seeds. We surveyed Korean pine seeds, including solid seeds （SS）, insect consumed seeds （ICS） and other （animal） consumed （OCS） kernels, of the seed bank （forest floor and the top 10 cm of mineral soil）, the seedlings and saplings from 1 m： sample plots in five forest types in Liangshui Nature Reserve （LNR） of the southern Xiao Xing＇an Moun- tains in northeastern China to provide accurate information for assessing the Korean pine regeneration potential. The average number of pine seeds in the seed bank were 11.2 seeds/m2, 9.1 seeds/m2, 4.6 seeds/m2, 1.1 seeds/m2, and 0.2 seeds/m2 in Korean pine-basswood forest, mixed Korean pine-hardwood forest, mixed conifer-hardwood forest, white birch forests, and oak forests, respectively. In the first three forest types, percentages of SS （potentially viable seeds） were 11.2%, 3.5% and 27.8%, respectively. The percentages of ICS （not viable seeds） were consistent at around 35%. The higher but variable percentages of OCS （not viable seeds） indicated high seed predation in these forests. Com- pared with other studies, we recorded higher percentages of seed damage, probably due to our survey approach and the increased depth of seed bank sampled in our study. Depletion of pine seeds in the seed bank greatly reduced seedling and sapling recruitment. Densities of pine seed- lings varied from about 180 trees/ha in the mixed Korean pine-hardwood forest to about 5,400 trees/ha in the mixed conifer-hardwood forests and showed a high degree of spatial variation. Saplings were rare in the mixed Korean pine-hardwood forest, but ranged in the thousands in other forests

Ecophysiological responses and carbon distribution of pinus koraiensis seedlings to elevated carbon dioxide

The net CO2 assimilation rate, stomatal conductance, RuBPcase (ribulose 1,5-biphosphate carboxylose) activity, dry weight of aboveground and belowgroud part, plant height, the length and diameter of taproot ofpinus koraiensis seedlings were measured and analyzed after six-week exposure to elevated CO2 in an open-top chamber in Changbai Mountain of China from May to Oct. 1999. Seedlings were planted in four different conditions: on an open site, control chamber, 500 μL·L?1 and 700 μL·L?1 CO2 chambers. The results showed that the total biomass of the seedlings increased whereas stomatal conductance decreased. The physiological responses and growth to 500 μL·L?1 and 700 μL·L?1 CO2 varied greatly. The acclimation of photosynthesis was downward to 700 μL·L?1 CO2 but upward to 500 μL·L?1 CO2. The RuBPcase activity, chlorophyll and soluble sugar contents of the seedlings grown at 500 μL·L?1 CO2 were higher than that at 700 μL·L?1 CO2. The concentration 500 μL·L?1 CO2 enhanced the growth of aboveground part whereas 700 μL·L?1 CO2 allocated more carbon to belowground part. Elevated CO2 changed the carbon distribution pattern. The ecophysiological responses were significantly different between plants grown under 500 μL·L?1 CO2 and 700 μL·L?1 CO2.

Fallen wood decomposition of pinus koraiensis and Tilia amurensis

Fallen wood decomposition rate ofpinus koraiensis andTilia amurensis in broadleaved Korean pine forest was studied in this paper. The result showed that decomposition rate of fallen wood was different from that of little diameter wood and coarse woody debris for the same tree species. Fallen wood decomposition was generally rotten from outside to inside. And decomposition speed of fallen woods was different according to tree species and site, and it was also related to diameter of fallen woods. Decomposition depth ofTilia amurensis fallen wood for 17 years was 14 cm, but that ofpinus koraiensis in the same condition was less than 7 cm.Tilia amurensis was decomposed faster thanpinus koraiensis. For same tree species, if the diameter was small, the decomposition speed was quick.

The Preliminary Study on Juvenile-Mature Correlation of pinus koraiensis

Through studying seven analytic trecs from two stands of pinus koraiensis artiticial forests. the results show thatthe individual variation coefticient of tree height. dbh and volume deereascs with age increasing after age of 25. Age of 25 isthe age that difference of individual growth is from acute difference to comparatively stability. The optimum selection age is25a for pinus koraiensis s artiticial forests according to the analysis of juvenile-mature correlation and early selection efficiency.

Photosynthesis adaption in Korean pine to gap size and position within Populus davidiana forests in Xiaoxing’anling, China

Forest gaps restrict the restoration of temperate secondary forest to broad-leaved Korean pine forest in zonal climax vegetation by affecting the growth of Korean pine(pinus koraiensis).However,the photo synthetic adaptability of Korean pine to gap size and position within the gap is unclear.In order to explore the adaptability of young Korean pine(35 years) to different gap sizes in Xiaoxing’anling,photo synthetic capacity and microenvironmental factors(leaf temperature,light transmittance) of Korean pine needles in three positions in the gap(central,transition,and edge areas) were investigated.Three gaps were identified in the secondary Populus davidiana forest:a large 201 m^(2) gap,a middle 112 m^(2) gap,and a small 50 m^(2) gap;12 m^(2) of the understory was sampled as a control.The results show that:(1) maximum net photosynthetic rate(P_(max)) in needles of Korean pine growing in the large gap was higher than in the small gap,and P_(max) in the centre in the same gap was higher than in the transition and edge areas;(2) light saturation point(LSP) and photosynthetic quantum yield(AQY)of needles in the large gap were higher than in the small gap,while the light compensation point(LCP) and chlorophyll contents of needles were lower in the small gap;and,(3)P_(max) had a significant positive correlation with temperature and light transmittance.It is suggested that the larger the gap in secondary Populus davidiana forests,the greater the change in light intensity and temperatures,the stronger the light adaption of Korean pine needles and the higher the photosynthetic capacity.Therefore,in the recovery of broadleaved/Korean pine forests,suitable gaps should be created and gap microhabitats fully utilized to accelerate the restoration process.

Optimal management of Korean pine plantations in multifunctional forestry

Korean pine is one of the most important plantation species in northeast China. Besides timber, it produces edible nuts and plantations sequester carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. This study optimized the management of Korean pine plantations for timber production, seed production, carbon sequestration and for the joint production of multiple benefits. As the first step, models were developed for stand dynamics and seed production. These models were used in a simulation-optimization system to find optimal timing and type of thinning treatments and optimal rotation lengths. It was found that three thinnings during the rotation period were optimal. When the amount or profitability of timber production is maximized, suitable rotation lengths are 65-70 years and wood production is 5.5-6.0 m(3) ha(-1) a(-1). The optimal thinning regime is thinning from above. In seed production, optimal rotation lengths are over 100 years. When carbon sequestration in living biomass is maximized, stands should not be clear-cut until trees start to die due to senescence. In the joint production of multiple benefits, the optimal rotation length is 86 years if all benefits (wood, economic profits, seed, carbon sequestration) are equally important. In this management schedule, mean annual wood production is 5.5 m(2) ha(-1) and mean annual seed yield 141 kg ha(-1). It was concluded that it is better to produce timber and seeds in the same stands rather than assign stands to either timber production or seed production.

Comparison of methods for extracting high-throughput sequencing RNA from Korean pine seeds

Korean pine （pinus koraiensis Sieb. et Zucc.） is an ecologically and economically important tree species in East Asia. Molecular studies of seed development of this species are limited due to the lack of effective RNA extraction protocols. This study aimed to obtain an effec- tive method to extract high-quality RNA from Korean pine seeds. The TRIzol kit and CTAB methods were used to extract the total RNA from Korean pine seeds at different developmental stages. The bands of RNA extracted by CTAB were not clear, whereas the bands of RNA extracted by the TRIzol kit were brighter and clearer, indicating higher quality and integrity of the RNA products extracted by the TRIzol kit. The 28S rRNA band was approximately 1.5- to 2-fold brighter than the 18S rRNA band on the agarose gel electrophoresis. The absorbance value A 260/280 was 1.8-2.0, and the absorbance value A 260/230 was 〉1.9. The Bioanalyzer RNA integrity results showed that the RNA integrity number of the RNA extracted using the TR/zol kit was acceptable for high-throughputsequencing. Therefore, the total RNA extracted using the TRIzol kit method can be used for high-throughput sequencing and other molecular biology experiments.

Different radial growth responses to climate warming by two dominant tree species at their upper altitudinal limit on Changbai Mountain

We analyzed the influence of climate change over the past 50 years on the radial growth of two tree species: Korean pine (pinus koraiensis) and Yezo spruce (Picea jezoensis), located on Changbai Mountain, Northeast China, using a dendrochronology approach to understand factors that limit the altitude for tree species. Elevated temperatures increased the radial growth of Korean pine and decreased that of Yezo spruce. The positive response of tree growth to hydrothermal conditions was the key reason that the upper limit of elevation of Korean pine followed the temperature fluctuation pattern. Increased temperatures and precipitation and longer growing seasons accelerated Korean pine growth. As the temperature increased, correlations between Korean pine ring-width chronology and precipitation changed from negative to positive. In Yezo spruce, increasing monthly temperatures and inadequate precipitation during the middle and late parts of the growing season led to narrow growth rings, whereas decreasing monthly temperatures and sufficient precipitation during the late growing season promoted growth. Rising temperatures and adequate precipitation increases Korean pine growth, possibly elevating the upper range limit in altitude for this species. In contrast, Yezo spruce growth is negatively affected by warming temperatures and limited precipitation. Under future temperature increases and precipitation fluctuations, the upper limit altitude of Korean pine can reasonably be expected to shift upward and Yezo spruce downward.

The effect of tree size,neighborhood competition and environment on tree growth in an old-growth temperate forest

Aims Understanding the controls influencing tree growth is central to forest ecology.Although many factors such as tree size,neighborhood competition and environmental variables,have been proposed as being important in explaining patterns of tree growth,but their relative contributions are still subject to debate.We aimed to examine the relative importance of tree size,local abiotic conditions and the density and identity of neighbors on tree growth in an old-growth temperate forest in northeast china.Methods We used linear mixed models with data from a 25 ha(500×500 m)broad-leaved Korean pine(pinus koraiensis)mixed forest perma-nent plot to examine the relative importance of these local drivers on tree growth at three organizational levels(community,guild and species).Subplot was included as a random effect to account for spatial autocorrelation in growth of trees located within the same subplot,and species was included as a random effect to account for variation among species in growth.Important Findings Tree size was typically the most important predictor of growth,followed by neighborhood competition and then soil nutrients.The correlation of tree size to growth varied from strongly positive for large trees and medium trees to slightly positive for small trees.The effect of neighbor-hood competition on growth showed weak negative density dependence as indicated by slightly negative effect of total basal area of neighbors and the proportion of conspecific neighbors.Environmental factors influenced growth of very common species,smaller tree-size classes and shade-tolerant species.We concluded that the relative importance of variables driving patterns of tree growth varied greatly among tree size classes,shade tolerance and abundance classes in this temperate for-est.These results provide critical information for future studies of forest dynamics and offer insight into forest management in this region.
