Permafrost is a potential mercury(Hg)pool released by thawing,which can raise the risk of Hg pollution under global warming.Tree rings are useful archives of environment-specific Hg exposure over long periods.We determined Hg concentrations in tree rings of two dominant tree species(Larix gmelinii Rupr.and Pinus sylvestris var.mongolica)at permafrost sites in northeastern China.The biweighted mean Hg concentrations ranged from 0.36 to 3.96 ng g^(-1) from 1840 to 2014.The tree-ring width had no significant influence on the Hg concentration.Larch Hg increased slightly before the 1970 s and peaked in the 1990 s.However,the pine Hg concentration increased continuously until the 1930 s,decreased rapidly until the 1970 s,then rose to a peak in the late 1980 s.The change of Hg concentrations in larch and pine revealed a time offset of 4 to 5 years,which implied possibly high mobility of Hg in pine tree rings.Higher Hg concentrations from 1920 to 1960 and subsequent decreases in isolated permafrost forests revealed the local geographical Hg cycling history.Lower Hg concentrations and faster increases in larch suggest the role of additional winter Hg loading for the evergreen pine and species-specific differences in root absorption in response to melting permafrost.Our results highlight possible geographical impacts on tree-ring Hg records,improve understanding of Hg cycles in permafrost forest,and suggest a need to sample additional species in a range of permafrost environments.

Turkish red pine(P inus brutia Ten.), an important pine species for afforestation studies, grows at a wide range of altitudes in the eastern Mediterranean area. Seeds from low(0–400 m a.s.l.), mid(400–800 m) and high(800–1000 m) altitudinal gradients were collected to assess the effects of these gradients on morphological traits(seed length, seed width, 100-seed weight), germination variables(germination percentage and mean germination time), and 10biochemical variables related to seed reserves. Relationships among these variables were examined with a correlation analysis. Seeds from low and high altitudes had significantly higher 100-seed weight, higher percentage germination but longer germination times and higher total oil and reducing sugars contents. Seeds from mid altitudes had higher carotenoid and soluble phenolics contents. Among the examined biochemical variables, only flavonoid content did not differ among the altitude gradients. The main fatty acids in seeds samples(linoleic, oleic, palmitic and stearic acids) were also influenced by the altitude gradients. Oil and total reducing sugars contents were positively correlated with germination percentage, and carotenoid content was negatively correlated with germination percentage. Our results confirmed that seed and germination variables, including the reserve composition varied significantly among the altitudinal gradients.

The objective of this study is to introduce a coherent theoretical perspective for sustaining forested landscapes at different scales:meta(forest region),gamma(forest property)and alpha(forest stand),with some details on practical implementation.The main part introduces an integrated set of approaches under three headings:a)gamma design,b)alpha jardinage,and c)continuous observation.The study is based on evidence gathered in the broadleaf and conifer mixed forests of north-eastern China,in European temperate forests,in various forest regions in India,in the afro-montane forests of Southern Africa,and in the pine-oak forests of the Mexican Sierra Madre Occidental.

Traditional methods used to monitor the aboveground biomass(AGB)and belowground biomass(BGB)of slash pine(Pinus elliottii)rely on on-ground measurements,which are time-and cost-consuming and suited only for small spatial scales.In this paper,we successfully applied unmanned aerial vehicle(UAV)integrated with structure from motion(UAV-SfM)data to estimate the tree height,crown area(CA),AGB,and BGB of slash pine for in slash pine breeding plantations sites.

The internal cycling of nitrogen(N)storage and consumption in trees is an important physiological mechanism associated with tree growth.Here,we examined the capability of near-infrared spectroscopy(NIR)to quantify the N concentration across tissue types(needle,trunk,branch,and root)without time and cost-consuming.The NIR spectral data of different tissues from slash pine trees were collected,and the N concentration in each tissue was determined using standard analytical method in laboratory.

The severe and rapid attack on the Caicos pine Pinus caribaea var. bahamensis(Pinaceae) by the nonnative invasive pine tortoise scale, Toumeyella parvicornis, has resulted in the death of most of the trees in the Turks and Caicos Islands(TCI) in just over a decade. Local and international conservation efforts have enabled the necessary multi-disciplinary research, data gathering, and monitoring to develop and implement a restoration strategy for this endemic tree from the Bahaman archipelago. The native plant nursery established on North Caicos and horticultural expertise acquired throughout the years were crucial to the successful rescue of Caicos pine saplings from the wild populations and cultivation of new saplings grown from locally sourced seeds. These saplings have been used to establish six Restoration Trial Plots on pine Cay and a seed orchard on North Caicos in TCI. Core Conservation Areas(CCAs) for the Caicos pine forests have been identified and mapped. To date, forest within the pine Cay CCA has been supplemented by planting more than 450 pine trees, which have survived at a high(>80%)rate.

Evaluation of forest ecosystem services is a hot topic,both in China and at abroad,but it has not yet obtained a consistency of evaluation indicator systems and evaluation methods.Under the framework of evaluation criteria to be implemented for forest ecosystem services,years of consecutive observation data from Long Term Ecological Research Stations affiliated to Chinese Forest Ecosystem Research Network(CFERN),forest resource inventory and public data were applied to carry out a detailed and dynamic evaluation on the physical quantity and value of ecosystem services of Chinese pine forests in China.The results showed that the above services had the total value and unit value of 1144.9640 billion(1.1449640×10 12 )RMB and 52.074 thousand RMB per hectare per year,respectively during the 9th Five-year Plan(1996―2000),and of 1190.5461 billion RMB and 52.101 thousand RMB per hectare per year,respectively,during the 10th Five-year Plan(2001―2005).For Chinese pine forests,water conservation was 40.40 hundred million cubic meters annually,soil conservation was 67 million tons and C fixation 9 million tons annually,production of healthful negative ions was 1.96×10 20 , absorption of SO2 was 5.02 hundred million kilograms and dust-catching was 759.10 hundred million kilograms. Among the 15 provinces of China with Chinese pine forests,the biggest beneficiary from ecosystem services was Liaoning Province;while Hunan Province was the smallest beneficiary between the 9th Five-year Plan.

The objective was to evaluate the use of condensed tannin(CT)-rich ground pine bark(PB)in grain mixed diets on meat goat growth performance,blood metabolites,and carcass characteristics.Twenty four Kiko crossbred(Capra aegugrus hircus)growing male kids(BW=36.9±2,5 kg)at approximately 8 months of age were assigned randomly to 2 treatments with 3 replicates per treatment and 4 goats per replicate.The goats were fed grain mixed diets composed of either 30%bermudagrass hay(BGH)plus concentrate(control)or 30%PB plus concentrate.Diets were fed at 1.2%of BW.In addition,all goats grazed a crabgrass/bermudagrass(CB)-based pasture.The feeding trial lasted for 55 d.Using ground PB as a supplement did not negatively affect BW,average daily gain(ADG),carcass characteristics,meat pH,and meat color compared to the control diet.Plasma gamma-glutamyl transferase(P=0.03),glucose(P<0.01)and Ca concentrations(P=0.04)were higher for PB than for BGH,respectively.The 30%PB supplementation does not negatively affect animal performance,blood metabolites,and carcass parameters.

Endophytic fungi associated with Pinus tabulaeformis Carr. were investigated in the Dongling Mountains of Beijing. A total of 16200 tissue segments of P. tabulaeformis from four sample collections were processed, and 10659 fungal isolates were recovered. The overall colonization and isolation rates of endophytic fungi from high to low were spring〉winter〉autumn〉summer and in different tissues were bark〉needle〉xylem, irrespective of sampling seasons. The colonization rates of endophytic fungi of needles increased with age in the four sample collections. There were no significant differences of the colonization rates of endophytic fungi among 1-, 2-, and 3-year-old bark and xylem, except for significantly lower colonization rates in 1-year-old bark than in 2- and 3-year-old bark in summer. A similar trend of the isolation rates of endophytic fungi occurred. A total of 24 fungal taxa were recorded, of these five taxa Alternaria alternata, Leptostroma sp., Pestalotiopsis besseyi, Phoma lingam, and Phomopsis archeri, were consistently isolated as the common fungi in each sample collection. Our results suggest that some fungi show a certain degree of tissue recurrence or specificity, and the composition of endophytic assemblages is not conspicuously influenced by the seasonal factor.
