Reducing turnover intention: Perceived organizational support for frontline employees

Frontline employees are generally under great pressure,and carry out repetitive and mundane daily tasks,leading to burnout and a high turnover intention among them.To identify ways to reduce this turnover intention,this study examines the effect of Perceived organizational support(POS)on burnout and turnover intention in the Chinese context and adds to the literature on frontline employee burnout.Using data from a survey of the frontline employees of a gas station in Beijing,we examine the mediating effects of frontline employee burnout on their POS and turnover intention.This study shows that POS has a significant negative impact on burnout and turnover intention,and that job resources cannot substitute POS.

研发人员的创造力是企业技术进步的重要源泉。基于组织支持感理论,从认知和情绪视角,将创造力效能感和积极情绪引入到组织支持感与研发人员创新行为的关系分析框架中,构建组织支持感→创造力效能感/积极情绪→研发人员创新行为理论模型,采用自填问卷法调查248名研发人员,在检验同源方差和问卷信效度的基础上,通过结构方程建模方法检验理论模型及相应的研究假设。研究结果表明,①在中国情境下,组织支持感对研发人员创新行为有显著正向影响,组织支持感及其各维度对研发人员创新行为有预测力,其中主管支持的预测力最强;②创造力效能感对研发人员创新行为有显著正向影响,并在组织支持感与研发人员创新行为间起部分中介作用;③积极情绪对研发人员创新行为有显著正向影响,在组织支持感与研发人员创新行为间起部分中介作用;④将创造力效能感和积极情绪同时并入中介模型后,两者的中介作用完全解释了组织支持感对研发人员创新行为的影响。

Positively Worded Subscale Score of the Perceived Stress Scale Is Associated with Cognitive Domain Function

Objectives: To examine the cross-sectional associations of the separate subscales of the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS) and tests measuring cognitive domains in older adults. Methods: 897 adults over the age of 70 free of amnestic mild cognitive impairment and dementia and enrolled in the Einstein Aging Study made up the study sample. The PSS-14 was used to measure stress. Three cognitive domains (language, episodic memory, and frontal-executive) had previously been found using principle component analysis. Linear regression analyses were used to determine the relationship between the PSS subscales and cognitive domain function. Results: The study sample had a mean age of 79.1 years and 62.8% were female. Bivariate correlations show that the PSS-14 positively worded subscale of the PSS (PSS-PW) was significantly associated with all three cognitive domains (language: r = -0.15, p < 0.001;episodic memory: r = -0.16, p < 0.001;frontal-executive: r = -0.21, p <0.001) while the negatively worded subscale of the PSS (PSS-NW) was not significantly associated with any cognitive domain. In linear regression analyses adjusted for age, white race, gender, years of education, and depressive symptoms, the PSS-PW remained significantly associated with each of the cognitive domains. The PSS-NW was not associated with any cognitive domains in any model. The PSS-14 was significantly associated with language and episodic memory, but not the frontal-executive domain. Conclusion: Worse PSS-PW scores are associated with reduced cognitive function in the executive, memory, and language domains in nondemented older adults. The PSS-PW subscale correlated better with cognitive function than the overall PSS-14. Future research should evaluate the temporality of the association and if stress reduction therapies improve cognitive performance.

The association of depression and Perceived stress with beta cell function between African and Haitian Americans with and without type 2 diabetes

Background: Diabetes and diabetes-related complications are major causes of morbidity and mortality in the United States. Depressive symptoms and Perceived stress have been identified as possible risk factors for beta cell dysfunction and diabetes. The purpose of this study was to assess associations between depression symptoms and Perceived stress with beta cell function between African and Haitian Americans with and without type 2 diabetes. Participants and Methods: Informed consent and data were available for 462 participants (231 African Americans and 231 Haitian Americans) for this cross-sectional study. A demographic questionnaire developed by the Primary Investigator was used to collect information regarding age, gender, smoking, and ethnicity. Diabetes status was determined by self-report and confirmed by fasting blood glucose. Anthropometrics (weight, and height and waist circumference) and vital signs (blood pressure) were taken. Blood samples were drawn after 8 10 hours over-night fasting to measure lipid panel, fasting plasma glucose and serum insulin concentrations. The homeostatic model assessment, version 2 (HOMA2) computer model was used to calculate beta cell function. Depression was assessed using the Beck Depression Inventory-II (BDI-II) and stress levels were assessed using the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS). Results: Moderate to severe depressive symptoms were more likely for persons with diabetes (p = 0.030). There were no differences in Perceived stress between ethnicity and diabetes status (p = 0.283). General linear models for participants with and without type 2 diabetes using beta cell function as the dependent variable showed no association with depressive symptoms and Perceived stress;however, Haitian Americans had significantly lower beta cell function than African Americans both with and without diabetes and adjusting for age, gender, waist circumference and smoking. Further research is needed to compare these risk factors in other race/ethnic groups.

The purpose of this study was to examine how academic stress and Perceived social support influence the psychological wellbeing of Senior High School students in Ghana. Two hundred and twenty six male and female students participated. The general health questionnaire, student life-stress inventory and Perceived social support from family and friends scales were used to assess psychological wellbeing, academic stress and Perceived social support respectively. The results indicated that Perceived social support buffered the effects of academic stress on psychological wellbeing. Girls reported higher scores on Perceived social support but reported more depression. Boys reported higher academic stress and better psychological wellbeing, and these have been attributed partly to the socialisation role of gender. These results have policy implications in respect of the creation of a cordial school environment as well as encouraging a healthy interpersonal relationship between adolescents and their family and friends with the aim of reducing academic stress appraisal which is inimical to the psychological wellbeing of adolescents.

Influence of adverse weather on drivers’ Perceived risk during car following based on driving simulations

Adverse weather has a considerable impact on the behavior of drivers,which puts vehicles and drivers in hazardous situations that can easily cause traffic accidents.This research examines how drivers'Perceived risk changes during car following under different adverse weather conditions by using driving simulation experiment.An expressway road scenario was built in a driving simulator.Eleven types of weather conditions,including clear sky,four levels of fog,four levels of rain and two levels of snow,were designed.Furthermore,to simulate the carfollowing behavior,three car-following situations were designed according to the motion of the lead car.Seven car-following indicators were extracted based on risk homeostasis theory.Then,the entropy weight method was used to integrate the selected indicators into an index to represent the drivers'Perceived risk.Multiple linear regression was applied to measure the influence of adverse weather conditions on Perceived risk,and the coefficients were considered as indicators.The results demonstrate that both the weather conditions and road type have significant effects on car-following behavior.Drivers'Perceived risk tends to increase with the worsening weather conditions.Under conditions of extremely poor visibility,such as heavy dense fog,the measured drivers'Perceived risk is low due to the difficulties in vehicle operation and limited visibility.

Background: Many instruments used to assess outcomes of treatment for Alzheimer’s disease (AD) have no published evidence of their relevance and content validity in earlier stages of the disease, i.e., mild cognitive impairment, or prodromal AD (pAD). The objective of this project was to evaluate the applicability and usefulness of the Perceived Deficits Questionnaire (PDQ) as an outcome measure in this population using qualitative methodology to support content validity. Method: Two waves of qualitative interviews were conducted in patients with MCI and pAD. Results: Evidence for content validity and usefulness of the instrument was demonstrated in the patient interviews. Minor modifications to the wording of several items were suggested for the PDQ and the recall period was changed. Conclusion: With these modifications, the PDQ has improved content validity and relevance. It is therefore a potentially useful outcome measure to evaluate therapeutic benefit in interventional studies of patients in the early stages of AD.

Relationship between Perceived Health Status and Health Practices in the General Adult Population in Japan

The objective of this study was to explore the relationship of Perceived health status and Breslow’s seven health Practices(7 - 8 hours of sleep per night, maintaining a healthy weight, moderate or no alcohol intake, regular physical activity, no eating between meals, eating breakfast, and having never smoked cigarettes) in adult residents in Kumamoto Prefecture Japan. We used 2011 data from the “Health Japan 21” program in Kumamoto Prefecture, a study consisting of 2519 adults aged from 20 - 74 years. Data for the study were gathered by questionnaire. The questionnaire was divided into following sections: Perceived health status, seven health practices, life satisfaction, depression, social network, and demographic variables. We found that those groups engaged in more than four health practices had higher scores for Perceived health status than those groups with less than four. Using Pearson’s correlation coefficient, positive correlations were found between Perceived health status and health practices (r = 0.229, p – 0.058, p – 0.093, p– 0.109, p Perceived health status by age and gender. The data from multiple regression analysis show an association between level of Perceived health status and life satisfaction, the seven health practices, employment, age, depression, and social network. Our findings demonstrate a relationship between Perceived health status and the seven health practices, and can be used to encourage healthier practices to enhance Perceived health status and life satisfaction in community health care work.

This empirical study focused on investigating the Perceived trust surrogated by a number of hy-pothesized factors and its effect on the choice of method of payment. The data were collected using a questionnaire, as the instrument for the primary data collection, with total collected back responses of 214 from customers of MarkaVIP. Structural equation modeling technique was used to fully analyze the data in order to determine what level of the relationship between the constituting factors of the Perceived trust and the method of payment. The main findings were related to confirming the seven main hypotheses of the research that were related to testing if some factors were important to forming Perceived trust by customers. Four factors (reputation, security, familiarity, and ease of use) were found to have a positive effect and the remaining three were not (privacy, size and usefulness). In addition, having Perceived trust meant no preference to any method of payment by the customers.
