Effect of temperature on pearl deposition rate and matrix protein gene expressions in Hyriopsis cumingii

In this study,we investigated the impact of water temperature on pearl formation and the molecular mechanisms underlying this biomineralization process in the mussel Hyriopsis *** the laboratory experiment,recipient mussels received saibo grafts from donor mussels and then were cultivated at five temperatures(16,20,24,28,and 32◦C)for 1 *** found that speed of pearl formation varied with water temperature:there was no visible pearl granules at 16 and 20◦C,tawny pearl granules were collected at 24◦C and lustrous pearl granules were collected at 28 and 32◦*** expressions of several nacreous layer matrix protein genes(hic22,hic24,HcTyr Hc-upsalin and Hcperlucin)at 28◦C and 32◦C were peaked on day 28,and the expressions of other nacreous layer matrix protein genes(hic52 and hic74)on day 28 were significant higher than day *** the natural environment,pearl deposition rate also increased as water temperature rose,and the optimum range for pearl growth in *** was between 28.3 and 30.3◦*** of the prismatic layer-related matrix protein genes hic31 and both prismatic and nacreous layer-related matrix protein gene silkmapin was significantly high in winter,and expressions of the nacreous layer-related matrix protein genes(hic24,hic74,HcTyr,Hc-upsalin and Hcperlucin)were always higher during higher temperature seasons compared with *** results indicate that high water temperature can speed up pearl formation and further regulate matrix protein secretion to accelerate pearl nacre deposition.

Urban shrinkage and growth: Measurement and determinants of economic resilience in the pearl River Delta

In the aftermath of the global financial crisis of 2008, China witnessed gradual shrinkage of cities in the pearl River Delta(PRD). In this study, we introduce the concept of economic resilience to analyse urban growth and shrinkage in the context of a rapidly-urbanising region. Multiple regression analysis is performed to explore the determinants of economic resilience in the PRD. By measuring resistance in the shrinking phase and recoverability in the growing phase in a group of cities in the PRD, this study distinguishes four scenarios and investigates their characteristics from a spatial perspective. The results demonstrate that the financial crisis had a severe and asymmetric influence on this area, indicating more than 15% of cities are faced with shrinking. The spatial distribution of economic resilience indicates a centre-periphery pattern, that is, high economic resilience in the inner ring and low economic resilience in the outer ring of the PRD. The service economy is found to play a significant role in promoting urban economic resilience. Results imply that sound economic policies for enhancing resilience: both poor local financial status and a high degree of export concentration adversely impact resistance, while upgrading the manufacturing economy and stimulating of industrial innovation are conducive to improve recoverability.

pearl S. Buck's Feminist Translation in All Men Are Brothers

pearl S. Buck is the first woman who wins the Nobel Prize in Literature for her devotion to the communication between China and the world outside. Being a female writer, she expresses her great concern for women's life. She is the first to translate the Chinese classics Shui Hu Zhuan into English with the expectation to give a real description about China, which is incredibly popular in American society. With the wakening-up of the women's movement in the west, more and more women writers began to concentrate on a historic project—letting women be heard, women realize that they should not be silent and invisible as they reinterpret the source text into another language. pearl S. Buck is no exception; in this thesis the strategies of her feminist translation will be illustrated in detail.

Calponin Isoform Expression in the Japanese pearl Oyster, <i>Pinctada fucata</i>

Calponin is a basic actin-binding protein found widely in invertebrate tissues including catch muscle and therefore may participate in catch contraction. There is limited information about molluscan calponin and molecular characterization to reveal its function in the regulatory system. We previously identified and partially sequenced three calponin isoforms of the Japanese pearl oyster, Pinctada fucata (Pifuc-CP-1, Pifuc-CP-2 and Pifuc-CP-3). In this study, the full-length nucleotide sequences of the three isoforms were determined. The primary structures revealed that Pifuc-CP-1 consists of 324 amino acids (aa) with a molecular mass (Mw) of 34.7 kDa and an isoelectric point (pI) of 9.40. Pifuc-CP-2 is 303 aa in length with a Mw of 33.3 kDa and a pI of 9.30, and Pifuc-CP-3 is 398 aa in length with a Mw of 43.8 kDa and a pI of 8.55. Domain architecture prediction showed that the three isoforms have a single calponin homology (CH) domain and multiple calponin (CN) domains. Pifuc-CP-1, Pifuc-CP-2 and Pifuc-CP-3 possess four, three and five CN domains, respectively. Tissue distribution analysis indicated the presence of additional calponin isoforms and these isoforms are distributed widely in muscle and non-muscle tissues. Results of cDNA cloning revealed further four calponin isoforms: Pifuc-CP-4 (402 aa, 42.8 kDa, pI = 9.10), Pifuc-CP-5 (285 aa, 30.7 kDa, pI = 9.45), Pifuc-CP-6 (286 aa, 31.1 kDa, pI = 9.60) and Pifuc-CP-7 (302 aa, 33.3 kDa, pI = 9.10). The domain architecture of these four isoforms also consists of a single CH domain and multiple CN domains. Pifuc-CP-4 possesses six CN domains, whereas Pifuc-CP-5, Pifuc-CP-6 and Pifuc-CP-7 contain three CN domains. Sequence alignment of P. fucata calponin isoforms showed that Pifuc-CP-1, Pifuc-CP-2, Pifuc-CP-3 and Pifuc-CP-4 have identical CH domain sequences, whereas Pifuc-CP-5, Pifuc-CP-6 and Pifuc-CP-7 have identical CH domain sequences.
