Heavy metal distribution of natural and reclaimed tidal riparian wetlands in south estuary, China

We evaluated the distribution and accumulation of Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb and Zn in two plant species （Scirpus tripueter Linn. and Cyperus malaccensis Lam.）, in water and soils sampled from the reclaimed tidal riparian wetlands （RTRWs） and the natural riparian wetlands （NRWs） in the pearl river estuary （PRE）. The results showed that the concentrations of studied heavy metals in soils exceeded the eco-toxic threshold recommended by US EPA. The concentrations of Cd, Cr and Zn in plants may lead to toxic effiects. The heavy metal concentrations were high in water and low in soils of RTRWs compared with that in the NRWs. The accumulation of heavy metals in the roots of plants was higher in NRWs than those in RTRWs while the opposite result was found for heavy metal accumulation in shoots. Based on the bioaccumulation and translocation factors, the plants in NRWs had a higher capacity to accumulate heavy metals while higher abilities to transport heavy metals from roots to shoots were observed in RTRWs. Heavy metal contaminations in RTRWs were dominated by anthropogenic sources from both side uplands and river water, whereas in NRWs, the metal accumulations were simultaneously affected by anthropogenic and natural factors

Assessment of heavy metal levels in surface sediments of estuaries and adjacent coastal areas in China

This article investigates the variations of contamination levels of heavy metals such as copper, lead, chromium, cadmium, zinc, arsenic, and mercury over time in surface sediments of the Changjiang river estuary （CRE）, Yellow river estuary （YRE）, pearl river estuary （PRE）, and their adjacent coastal areas in China. The contamination factor （CF）, pollution load index （PLI）, and geoaccumulation index （Igeo） are used to evaluate the quality of the surface sediments in the study areas. The results showed that the CRE, YRE, and their adjacent coastal areas were at a low risk of contamination in terms of heavy metals, while the PRE and its adjacent coastal area were at a moderate level. By comparison, the concentrations of heavy metals in the surface sediments of the YRE and its adjacent coastal area were relatively lower than those in the CRE, PRE, and their adjacent coastal areas.

An ultraviolet to visible scheme to estimate chromophoric dissolved organic matter absorption in a Case-2 water from remote sensing reflectance

In a typical Case-2 coastal water environment(here,the pearl river estuary(PRE),China),chromophoric dissolved organic matter(CDOM)and suspended particulates dominate the water optical properties,and CDOM fluorescence contributes considerably to surface water *** this paper,an ultraviolet(UV)to visible scheme to retrieve CDOM absorption(ag)is developed based on a set of in situ ***,the CDOM UV absorption and spectral slope(Sg)are derived directly from the visible remote sensing reflectance;then the Sg is extrapolated to obtain the spectrum from UV to visible spectral *** algorithm performs well,with an overall mean absolute percent difference(MAPD)of^30%,~5%and^6%for the estimation of ag in 250–450 nm,Sg over 250–400 nm,and 250–700 nm,*** effectiveness and stability of the algorithm is further demonstrated in capturing the distribution pattern of CDOM absorption in the PRE from satellite ocean color imagery with multiple spatial and spectral resolution,namely:the Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite(VIIRS)(750 m/Multispectral),the Ocean and Land Color Instrument(OLCI)(300 m/Multispectral),the Hyperspectral Imager for the Coastal Ocean(HICO)(100 m/Hyperspectral),and the Landsat 8 Operational Land Imager(OLI)(30 m/Multispectral).The UV to visible scheme can benefit the CDOM absorption estimation in two aspects:1)it is free from the disturbance of suspended matter;2)it avoids uncertainties caused by the low signalto-noise ratio(SNR)of ag measurements in the visible *** algorithm is effective in revealing multiple scales of variation of CDOM absorption from ocean color observations.

The estuary-bay system is a common and complex coastal ***,quantifying submarine groundwater discharge(SGD)and associated nutrient fluxes in the complex coastal environment is challenging due to more dynamic and complicated riverine discharge,ocean processes and human *** this study,SGD and SFGD(submarine fresh groundwater discharge)fluxes were evaluated by combining stable and radium isotopes in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area(GBA),a typical estuary-bay *** first built a spatially distributed radium mass balance model to quantify SGD fluxes in coastal areas of GBA integrating the pearl river estuary(PRE),bays and *** then used the stable water isotope(d2 H and d18O)end-member mixing model to distinguish submarine fresh groundwater discharge(SFGD)from *** on the 228Ra mass balance,the estimated SGD fluxes in the PRE,adjacent bay,and shelf areas were(6.14±2.74)×10^(8) m^(3) d^(-1),(3.00±1.11)×10^(7) m^(3) d^(-1),and(5.00±5.64)×10^(8) m^(3) d^(-1),*** showed that the largest area-averaged SGD was in the PRE,followed by that in the adjacent shelf and the *** differences may be mainly influenced by ocean forces,urbanization and benthic topographies controlling the variability of groundwater ***,the three end-member mixing model of ^(228)Ra and salinity was developed to confirm the validity of the estimated SGD using the Ra mass balance *** the two models,groundwater endmember and water apparent age estimation were the main sources of uncertainty in *** estimated SFGD flux was(1.39±0.76)108 m^(3) d^(-1),which accounted for approximately 12%of the total *** stable and radium isotopes was a useful method to estimate groundwater ***,the estimated SGD associated dissolved inorganic nitrogen(DIN)flux was one order of magnitude higher than other DIN *** was considered to be a significant contributor to the DIN loading to the *** findings

PPCPs - A human and veterinary fingerprint in the pearl river delta and northern south China sea

This study aimed to identify stable indicator contaminants of pharmaceuticals and personal care products(PPCPs)to trace the anthropogenic fingerprint of the pearl river plume in the coastal waters of the northern South China Sea.40 PPCPs were under investigation,of which 14 were detected along the pearl river estuary and 4 on the shelf of the northern South China *** show that caffeine,metoprolol,diclofenac,and carbamazepine can be utilized to detect the human *** are diluted along the pearl river,as their concentrations decrease from low salinity towards high *** antibiotics and trimethoprim are suitable to determine the veterinary and human *** highest concentrations were detected along the river yet still in low saline water whereas,the origin of the organic UV-filter is *** source could not be precisely *** caffeine,metoprolol,octocrylene,and PBSA were detected at the near-coastal stations in the South China *** can be utilized as suitable indicators to detect an anthropogenic impact on the northern South China *** detected concentrations are of low risk to organisms in the pearl river and the northern South China Sea.
