Visit-to-Visit Blood Pressure Variability Are Associated with an Imbalance between Sympathetic and parasympathetic Tone in Hypertensive Patients

Greater fluctuations in office blood pressure increase the risk of stroke and blood pressure volatility is an important risk factor for cardiovascular events. Effects of sympathetic and parasympathetic nerve on blood pressure regulation are well known, however, those on visit-to visit variation remains unclear. Aim of this study is to clarify the contribution of sympathetic and parasympathetic balance on blood pressure fluctuation. Methods: We enrolled 23 outpatients with essential hypertension. We measured blood pressure, and pulse rate at clinic 14 times in a row and calculated coefficient of variance (CV) as visit-to-visit variability. The velocity of pupil contraction, miosis (VC) and dilation, mydriasis (VD) was determined from pupillary function test. Results: Systolic blood pressure and diastolic blood pressure were not significantly correlated with VC, VD and VD/VC. Heart rate was not correlated with VC and VD, but significantly correlated with VD/VC. CV of systolic blood pressure, diastolic blood pressure and heart rate were not significantly correlated with VC or VD. Ratio of VD to VC significantly negative correlated with CV of blood pressure, diastolic blood pressure, and heart. Value of VD was significantly correlated with value of VC. Conclusion: Visit-to-visit variability of blood pressure and heart rate is not related with sympathetic or parasympathetic tone independently but augmented by the impaired sympathetic and parasympathetic balance.

Background: Reading anxiety is the nervousness and fear that occurs when an individual read. Studies have shown that college students with developmental dyslexia have higher levels of anxiety when completing reading tasks than normal college students, and the self-reported anxiety level of normal college students is related to the physiological arousal during reading tasks. However, there are still few experimental studies on the reading anxiety of children with dyslexia and its physiological mechanism. This study investigated the self-reported anxiety levels and physiological stress responses in children with developmental dyslexia. Methods: Fifty-five children from Grade 4 of Chinese primary school(23 children with dyslexia and 32 normal children) aged from 9.2 to 10.8 were included in this study. Participants completed Chinese Reading Anxiety Scale and collected cortisol data from saliva, an indicator of hypothalamic pituitary gland axis(HPA) response, before and after the reading comprehension tasks. The SOMNOtouchTM was used to collect the ECG data, an indicator of physiological response of parasympathetic activity, during the reading comprehension task. Results:(1) Children with dyslexia reported higher reading anxiety than normal children, but there is no difference in parasympathetic activity and cortisol response between children with dyslexia and normal children during reading tasks.(2) For the normal children, the reduction of HF-HRV during the task significantly predicted the reading comprehension task score, whereas the correlation was disappeared in children with dyslexia.(3) The salivary cortisol concentration during reading comprehension tasks was significantly elevated in girls, but not in boys. Conclusion: Children with dyslexia have higher reading anxiety than normal children, but the effects present only in psychological measurement but not in physiological measurements. Background: Mathematical anxiety refers to the expression of anxiety or fear when an individual completes mathematical problems. Mathematical anxiety might lead to deficiency of mathematical performance. However, there is lack direct evidence to support the influence of mathematical anxiety on mathematical performance. Study 1: Studies have shown sex differences in mathematical anxiety and academic performance of mathematics of middle and high school adolescents: 1) Girls’ mathematical anxiety is higher than that of boys;and 2) Girls’ academic performance of mathematics is lower than that of boys. Here in Study 1, we investigated how sex influences academic performance of mathematics mediating by mathematical anxiety. A total of 389 middle school students(165 girls, 224 boys) aged from 12 to 15 years old participated in this study. The mathematical anxiety scale and the mathematical performance of the final exam of all participants were collected. Results showed that 1) Mathematical performance of boys were significantly higher than that of girls;2) mathematical anxiety of boys was lower than that of girls;3) regression analysis revealed that sex effects of mathematical performance is mediated by mathematical anxiety;but sex effects of mathematical anxiety is not mediated by mathematical performance. The results suggest that mathematical anxiety might be the cause of deficiency of mathematical performance. Study 2: From a physiological experiment, we further investigated how mathematical anxiety directly impact mathematical performance through physiological responses, indicators of parasympathetic nervous system activity. A total of 104 middle school students were included in this study, in which 29 subjects had mathematical anxiety.
